Many times I’ve woken up in the middle of the night with a new and better idea on how a project should be done. Most of my best ideas seem to come from my subconscious. Is that what happened in regard to your wiring change?
@TravelsWithGeordie3 күн бұрын
So true! Many of my best ideas come to me in the middle of the night. But some, like this one, just emerge out of an obvious blunder! Thanks for your comment and your continued support of the show. Means a lot to us!

I had the same prob with complex angles with capped ends. I “invented” a method… Cut a 3-4” piece for each side and shave to get angle for each. Then clamp/hot glue a filler/spacer. Makes a perfect template. Been watching since the beginning. Love your content.

Protip for cleaning the solder iron tip, a moist sponge will clean up the tip quick and not damage the tinned tip of the iron like steel wire or brush does.

I spent a couple of years doing a lot of custom lighting and electronics for the commercial fixture industry. ALWAYS solder those COB strips together. Use an exacto knife to scrape away the coating on the solder pad helps too. The heat shrink tubing over the joint is a nice touch. Great tutorial Mr. Peter!

Yeah,Peter. We call this technique “cut and cover”. Basically, one keeps cutting, fitting and coveing any part of the project that doesn’t look like a boat until one is happy with the results. If it still doesn’t look like a boat, just cut that part off. Lol 😂

I'm just waiting to see how lighting the registration number will look. The art of the cliff-hanger! Next episode, no doubt. The whole effect is really great. I think the mini puck light would be most effective only if you installed a mirror, since a person's head would likely shadow the larger puck light behind. That all depends on how sharp the curve of the hull is in that location--the video tends to flatten out surfaces that logically we can guess are of a much different shape.
@TravelsWithGeordie3 күн бұрын
Thanks so much! Sadly, you are two episodes from the registration number lighting but, oooo, I expect it to be spectacular! Lovely interpretation of how the camera sees the wood. Cheers!

I used very similar COB lights, maybe even the same ones, in my off-grid cabin. I also used some very shallow recessed 12v ceiling lights. I need to install some dimmers, it's far too much on a winter's evening, feels like I'm approaching the sun's surface. Like you, I have a semblance of an idea what I'm building, and then refine, or rip out and start over. Being offgrid, it's solar on lithium with a 120vac for some standard outlets, but nearly everything is 12vdc like an RV or Boat. I do use the Victron blue stuff, so I can see what my cabin is doing when I'm not there. I do love your project, I grew up and spent plenty of time sailing in that area, then moved to CA in my late 30s.
@TravelsWithGeordie5 күн бұрын
Sounds like you have a great set up there! And yes, they work very well with a dimmer. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Cheers!

Peter, good info on your soldering demo. That is exactly how I do it. I think it looks great, TBH, I think the pin pucks would be a bit much, although you could opt to run another strip on the back side of the trim rather than the pin pucks and it would throw a good deal of light back in that space with a lovely bounce effect.
@TravelsWithGeordie5 күн бұрын
That was certainly my first thought. But I don't really need that much light back there. Lets hope the pucks work out. Thanks for the comment and we'll see you next week!

offhand thought: in finding the distance a piece like the cedar along the curve. do you ever use the traditional two sliding sticks method?
@TravelsWithGeordie5 күн бұрын
That's a great point Daniel! The problem in this case is that the length is along a curve. I suppose two flexible sliding sticks might have done the trick.

Peter, I have a question about the COB led light strip. What transformer do you use? I assume it a dimmer type correct?
@TravelsWithGeordie3 күн бұрын
Actually, the LED's are 12 volt DC. So a perfect candidate for boat use, as you can run them off the house battery. No transformer required. As yes, the work very well with dimmers.

FINALLY A PROPERLY SIZED SOLDERING IRON (still too big... Shoulda gotten a TS80, or pinecile for this type of work... Much thinner, usb powered etc... but hey, much better than the gun for this type of work) Also you can get No clean leaded solder on the internet (digikey, mouser, amazon?) if you are having difficulties with the stuff you can get at the stores. No clean means you don't need to worry about the flux inside the solder corroding the stuff it touches once it's all over your PCB/LED flex strip, leaded means the solder will flow much better and make a nice joint easier, much easier. If it still doesnt flow well and glob up nicely, add more flux. If you don't have separate flux add more solder, it has the rosin flux core inside the solder.
@TravelsWithGeordie5 күн бұрын
Really great stuff here, thank you! I'll look into that no clean solder.

Not a huge deal but your 12 volt amp meter doesn't look right. At 0.04 amps, that would be around than half a watt to power your lights? I would expect the lights are using around 10 watts.
@TravelsWithGeordie2 күн бұрын
Keen eye, you're right. These meters are a bit vague at low currents, I chose one with a max current of 250 amps to be useful for my big alternator, 180 and big loads, inverter and windlass. But the big shunt makes it inaccurate at low current. there is a trimmer on the meter and I'll see it it helps. up over an amp it's pretty close.
