Just a minor tip on fanfret guitars, the angle of the nut (eyeballed in this case) regulates which fret will be the perpendicular one and the way you do it is by aligning the perpendicular fret of each scale and mark from there. It's best to have the 7th be perpendicular (that's an opinion not a fact) since most people spend their playing time around that area. Happy building!

Helge Moulding definitely want to go slow with it. Drilling into the end of the truss rod probably wouldn’t be much fun. Depending on the truss rod, might be able to change out the adjustment head if it gets damaged. Either way, trying is probably better than removing the fretboard, etc

I dunno if these are going up fast enough for suggestions to help, but I have one: Explorers have a tendency to be surprisingly neck-divey for something that appears to have a big damn ballast at the tail end--and that's when they're solid and 14 lbs of guitar. I know putting the strap button on the back of the heel on your center line isn't ideal for playing in the upper register, but it might be necessary for balance. In my experience, it really doesn't get in the way as much as one might fear, either. It also eliminates the need for strap locks for reasonable use.

The PERPENDICULAR fret isn't that much to fuss over, if it's 11 or 12, unless you're using dedicated hardware with a fan set up for it (like the hipshot hardtails that have specific degrees offset) I personally use the 17th with a ¾" deviation, but that's so I can use a standard Wilkinson roller tuneomatic. I found the 18th to have to extreme of a fan in the lower register, losing the ergonomics, and 16th to have to much angle on the bridge, making setup almost impossible.
@lloydpittonet4 жыл бұрын
Also, a square isn't going to tell you which fret is perpendicular. The neck widens, right? So the sides won't be square to the frets (unless by luck your fan just so happens to land as such. Might need to check mine to see if any are at 90° from either side)

can somebody explain how the scale and intonation will work with the middle of the scale being the 10th fret now ? not the 12th fret at 90 degrees to center line ? genuine question not a troll . peace and love 👍🏻☮❤.

The middle of the scale(s) remains at the 12th fret as the distances to nut and bridge aren't altered. It's just that the alignment of the scales across the width of the fretboard aren't centered on the 12th fret.

There's a video of a guy building a guitar with no power tools, he used that same "rabbet plane" to route out the truss rod cavity!

I was completely thrown by the “day one” comment lol loving the videos coming out every couple of days! I’m worried for your media guys, must be working 24/7, but we really do appreciate it

This one is pushing them to their limits of sanity but I think they will be ok.. a raise is in order I think.. B

Crimson Custom Guitars absolutely, nothing they don’t deserve though I’m sure! Love watching you liberate the guitars from those blocks of wood, please keep feeding my addiction hahaha

When you say, "Parallel", do you mean "Perpendicular"? I'm confused but love your builds and watch faithfully.

Oh no, it's going to be a very extreme fan, from 24.75 on the high side to infinite on the lowest string.

Ben, you are probably well placed to answer this question but how did the luthiers of the past build anything before masking tape? Maybe you need a no masking tape challenge at some point!
@CrimsonCustomGuitars5 жыл бұрын
Heresy! a No masking tape build!?! I don't think I could survive the frustration! Clamps, many crappy clamps in stupid places that didn't hold properly or dented the work.. I did not enjoy the pre-masking tape and superglue trick days as much as I do the present! B

Crimson Custom Guitars I’ll let you off then, that sounds horrendous! Can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

Question, bud: Would a dovetail saw work just as well as a fret saw? Are they the same? :)
@stanrogers56135 жыл бұрын
They're the same basic idea, but a fret saw is always crosscut (not rip, as many dovetail saws are) and the tooth set is sized for a fret wire sized kerf. If you've got a crosscut dovetail saw and can set the teeth correctly (so the blade isn't too thick, or too thin with a very hard blade that would snap teeth if you try to set it wide enough), then it could be your fret saw. (A dozuki could also work, again if you can get the kerf/set to the right size.)

I watch someone build a multiscale guitar and they made the 8th fret square to the centre line rather than the 12th fret so you get less of an angle at the nut.
@CrimsonCustomGuitars5 жыл бұрын
One fret less than many major manufacturers who make fanned fret.. maybe shouldn't have done this as a timed build but, well.. the votes were what the votes were.. B
