Shelby, i did a technique over a decade ago that has the same color as dripping candles. You do multiple layers of whatever colors you want. If you want rainbow, you do a first coat in red, let it dry, then blue, let it dry, green...and so forth. At the very end coat the piece in black. Then what you do is take a pipette and start dripping isopropyl alcohol all over the piece. Make sure the piece is elevated so the color can drip off the bottom of the piece. Ot creates a really colorful effect and looks like dripping candles. It's a great way to use up glaze colors you're not really fond of

I wonder if the shaving cream technique would be more vibrant with less shaving cream, so there's a high concentration of underglaze. A fun technique to watch you try would be using small amounts of coloured slip poured in and swirled around before fully pouring in plain slip to make a skin of swirling colour. The coloured slips making up the skin should hopefully be thin enough that it fully dries and doesn't contaminate your plain slip so you can reuse it. And also sprinkle some oxides into the mould before pouring the slip.

When I've used the same technique on leather I've found the best method is to use the same amount of shaving cream but add more drops of dye or stain spread around. Also the colors stay brighter and more distinct if you don't swirl it too much so the colors are darker. I'm not sure if that will work in your case, the dyes and stains we use are a lot thinner than your underglaze but it might be something else to try.

Would it be possible to add more underglaze to the shaving cream and leave it on during the firing? It seems like the shaving cream would burn away.

HELLO! I forgot to mention, these pieces will be available to purchase on my website on the 14th of August at 10am AEST! I will also have all the 'leftovers' from the market, last weeks mushroom bowls and the pieces that I didn't finish in time for the market in the restock too! Members of the channel will get a password to shop the collection before anyone else as one of their perks! Edited: thank you for all those who have shared some tips and better ways to achieve the result I was going for! I love the idea of using cling wrap! A few also suggested to just swirl it a couple of times! I’m actually going to try this but instead do it on a flatter less deep tray. I swirled it a lot as I was trying to seperate the underglaze so it wasn’t directly dipping into the underglaze as that can cause it to repel in the glaze firing. Popping it on a shallow dish will allow me to seperate it without it sinking into the airy pit and then cause an over mixing issue like you are all suggesting. I still don’t think it will be the results I was imagining. I was also experimenting!! Mixing it in more was an attempt to see if the shaving cream could be also used as a way to cover a whole piece in colour. It’s all just a bit of fun so please don’t take it personally that I didn’t particularly like the results of this. It was more because the result I wanted wasn’t achieved and not the technique itself! In order to get the results I wanted I need to try a different technique! If you try this technique, I hope it is everything you hoped for 💕

Using translator, sorry: A friend does the dyed effect by putting the under Glasse on a disposable kitchen towel, the ones that imitate cloth, she puts various colors and squeezes the cloth so that they mix little, then covers the piece with the towel and press it to print the paint pattern on it.

An elephant ear sponge will help those sponges come with different textures..instead of dab..dab ..use a smear swirls gesture..mix underglaze with glycerin instead of shaving cream..the glycerine will help suspend and flow like water colors.since your work is mold made it should not be difficult to practice technique on larger test peace until you find what works best for your vision of how this tiedye would translate using clay materials..

These are so adorable! It's great you're open to trying new things with your art. Have you ever tired crushing glass marbles and mixing it with glazes? Throughout the 1970s, my family had ceramic shops and we made our own underglazes and glazes, and even slip, which was sold and delivered mostly to schools and the military bases in our area at the time. One of my favorite techniques my father did was using the crushed marbles and mixing it into clear and colored glazes. I love how the different colors of melted glass dripped down the pieces. We did have to be careful when firing, though. It went on stilts so if it dripped it wouldn't stick to the shelves. Sometimes we would need to dremel off the bottoms so things would sit flat. It worked really well on the outside of planters, cups, and other things without a lot of detail because the melted glass was the star of that show. We even painted pottery this way for a place called Little Baja. They imported red clay pots from Mexico and we would glaze them up in this way and they sold like hotcakes. My all-time favorite color was Monterey Jade, and I still have a few pieces left that I'll always cherish. We worked out patooties off, but we sure made a lot of great memories.

I did a little owl as a child that was very similar if not the same mould! I lost him in a move about a decade ago. I wish I still had it as it was one of my favorites. I remember he was brown with a stoneware glaze. It wasn't just a solid brown though, more a flowing mixture of brown tones. It was a wonderful effect, looked like some beautiful polished brown stone you would find in a stream. I think I was five or six at the time. I did many pieces as a child at a friend's house but that owl was a favorite for about four decades. 💛

I used to work in a ceramics studio for 5 years and we did this all the time! The key is to have a very flat and thinner layer of shaving cream (we used to use a ruler or a spatula to make it flat) on a large piece of paper/cling wrap/foil, that way you can pick it up and manipulate it! And then use more underglaze than you think, you need quite a bit of it poured around on the shaving cream (like chocolate syrup drizzle vibes). Then when swirling the underglaze in, you focus on a bit of a gentler "move the paint around, not mix it" motion with something smaller like the back end of a paintbrush or a toothpick. Like marbling melted chocolate if you've ever seen that! And when you're done applying the shaving cream/paint all over the piece, let it sit for 5-10 minutes so the underglaze can really start to stick to the bisque. Then rinse it off with a very slow and gentle stream of cold water. Lastly, we would always double fire the bisque-- once to burn off all the shaving cream (to not mess with any glazes sitting on top or to get any shaving cream chemicals into any clear dip glazes), and another to set in all of the other final glazes being added. Hope this might help if you try again!!

Water marbling would probably give you the "tie-dyed" effect your looking for if your glaze doesnt disapate in the water. I'd use a wider, less deep bowl to do it in. It's nail art/ other objects decorating/ painting technique. Lots of KZbin videos for how to do it. I don't know if people have tried it w/ bisque or not.

I love the idea of doing gerber daisies in different colours as well as different colours of sunflowers for the eyes. One could also do black eyed susans. Goodness, a number of flowers would suit these. One need not paint actual irises and cornea for it to actually look like eyes, they look so right for eyes as is. One could also use bright orange and yellows from the 60's and 70's, a quick look at that era and you would find inspiration a la The Partridge Family Bird logo, etc. Also colours such as lime, moss, harvest gold, etc.. Go bold. Then to a peek at blue and white crisp Danish patterns are inspirational. Endless ideas. Have fun!

I had good experience with taking a shallow dish (like a pie pan) and putting white underglaze on it, then putting splotches of underglaze color into it and swirling it around. Then I took a wrung out little piece of sponge and dipped that into the swirled underglaze, then spotched that onto white underglaze coated bique and letting that dry. Then, afterward, I put an underglaze transfer on top. That worked really well.

Idea maybe create wax covered scrunchies and put them around the piece in the hope that they create the rubber band lines you see on tie dye(scrunchies because of the fabric so there are hopefully those little fold lines you see on actual tie dye) and then cover them in glaze.

I've done the shaving cream technique on eggs and paper a few times now. And for me, it works best the less I stir the color into the shaving cream, like you can make the lines and stuff but you want the color to stay up at the top. And you can usually only get 1-3 dips before needing fresh paint. Hopefully you can try this technique again because you can get some really cool patterns. Good luck

Would staining the slip different colours and then marbling the slip together before pouring work? Then some pops of colour and maybe antique for the details. @ShelbySherritt
@ShelbySherritt Жыл бұрын
Great idea! I think slip would be the way to go for that tie dye effect. I just really didn’t like the shaving cream! It was super smelly and super airy! Yess like Katie’s videos! The swirls were tricky because the underglaze kind of clumped in and I didn’t want to just dip the owls into straight underglaze because then it would have peeled away (especially that pesky purple). It’s probably hard to see in this video why I tried to spread it out. Even the places where it was solid faded out in the kiln due to not being thick even coats. It’s so tricky. I have seen other people post results and there’s definitely faded out probably worse than mine. I think the only way it would work the way I did it is if you were firing really low temps which I’m not! Someone suggested a flat spread rather than a container and I think that would work better to spread out the clumpy underglaze through the airy medium. I guess others will just have to try it and see what their results are like!

These are so cute!! 💕🌼 Also, I’ve never made any pottery, so I don’t have any proven techniques to share, but I wonder if there’s some way you could essentially “water marble” with the shaving cream to create a tie dye effect? Like layering glazes in the shaving cream and dragging the colours together the way you can with actual water marbling to create the classic tie dye circles? No clue if that would work, but thought I’d suggest it!

They are so pretty! I’m not a pottery person, but I wonder if there was some sort of glaze that you could put on initially, splatter colored glaze on top and then use air or gravity to mix and swirl the different colored glazes. It would be a similar idea to acrylic pour art.

These are so cute! I think you might get more of the color on the piece by not mixing it up in the shaving cream so much. Just drop it on, then gently swirl it so the color pattern stays on top of the shaving cream. New techniques are fun to experiment with! Your finished pieces are always so nice!

Very adorable pieces, have you considered mixing powdered glaze into oil, drop that oil with a dropper into a deep dish of water then marbling the pieces that way, I would try warmed up coconut oil, or maybe rice bran oil, or any light coloured oil. Happy experimenting!!

This was an interesting experiment. I hear you about not being able to move the foam when washing it off. With paper, this technique needs like 10 times more color to work. To wash off the shaving cream, you could try drying it 1st with a heatgun, then wipe off the not-so-foamy gunk that's left. If you hit the shaving cream with a heat gun on low heat, it should dissolve and dissappear. It works with an adjustable craft heat gun. A shop/industrial heat gun might get to hot and burn it.

I wonder if this could work with the gold? Since that seems to turn out super clear and vibrant every time.

I've watched enough of your videos this week that you're now showing up on the top of the youtube home page, so I may as well subscribe. I love your enthusiasm and energy, and your paint brush skills with the glazing (especially on the care bears mug you did with the black outline around everything) are absolutely incredible.
