Good Stuff. What did you miss? Yep...the landing light wires. Also, what engine model is that? I fly a PA28-161 with a O-320-D3G. Layout is a bit different. Oil cooler is left side rear. There is no box over the electrically driven fuel pump. In fact, I don't have that box at all on the left side. My air intake does not have the landing light in it and the air from the intake goes directly to an airbox holding a fillter.

And if the engine compartment looks that bad, what does the rest of the aircraft look like? I haven't checked for your list of videos, but in case you haven't already, you could use this aircraft to point out and explain things to look for during a detailed inspection (extended preflight or pre buy inspection?) and show what things look like when they need some attention or how to determine that they are still serviceable and safe in spite of looking yucky. You are doing a great job with all your videos, very informative.

Lmao, I'll go into a bit more in a latter video. For now just look for a philips head screw connecting a little wire to a round pressure switch that will be connected with a "T" fitting on an oil line. Once the engine starts producing oil pressure, it closes the circuit and lets electricity flow to the hobbs meter and start ticking.
@dbflyboy917
@dbflyboy917 7 жыл бұрын
When you're renting, just take a phillips head screwdriver, unscrew both screws holding the hobbs meter in, and disconnect it. Just don't forget to re-connect it before returning the airplane! That's all you need to know about the hobbs :)

This was very interesting and eye opening! As one who has spent decades fooling around under the hoods of cars and working on other engines, I had always *assumed* that an aircraft engine and compartment would be extremely neat, tidy, and well laid out, using high quality fittings and lines, and be well maintained. I'm not at all meaning to be derogatory. And maybe I have a touch of OCD, but that really does not look like any of those things under there! Is this a fairly typical example of light aircraft engine compartment? I want to get my mechanic's certification in addition to the pilot's license, and maintain my own airplane to extremely high standards. :)
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 7 жыл бұрын
This is fairly typical as most GA aircraft are 30-50 years old, and the old somewhat crappy components are what you are forced to use as it is all that is approved by the FAA. Couple that with flight schools that try to save penny's over improving safety and you get something that looks like this. You can expect this or worse in almost any flight school airplane, even in new aircraft, it doesn't take long for a flight school to leave them in a legal, mostly airworthy state of disrepair. Best to join a club or own your own!

Very good video. The thing I don’t understand is that cool air is more dense witch you will get a better combustion. If the air and fuel is being warmed going through the sump surely that would make the engine less efficient
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 6 жыл бұрын
That's correct! But engines overheating tend to seize and fail, so less power is better than no power. Remember these engines were designed just after the second world war

FLY8MA.com Flight Training. I did nor realise that these engines were that old. Suppose why change something that works. Is the Cessna the same set up as the pa28. When we shut down the engine we lean it off till the shuts down. Is this to use the fuel up that is in the float chamber rather then turning the ignition off. It reminds me of a VW beetle engine.
@parallelburrito
@parallelburrito 6 жыл бұрын
I'm new to GA aircraft. I feel having a wide band O2 sensor to be able to accurately control mixture would be helpful. Preventing cylinder wash and running lean saves engines. Also would like to see the starter solenoid in the cockpit. If it failed you could jump it with something to start the aircraft. Starter solenoids can be sketchy.

Lol, could have saved us all a lot of money if some one told me that day one of training. And I'm not, unfortunately don't have the time to get the two years required work experience in a shop to get the A&P cert. Pretty much taught myself how to work on my own aircraft (I've had quite a few) as I've always had a hard time finding an A&P that would do 100% of what I wanted done, in a timely manner, done right the first time, and not at rates of $100+ per hour. Not to knock the profession at all, just seems to get it done right you have to do it yourself.

How did this thing ever get a airworthiness certificate? Just about every thing he pointed at and said was important was fucked up in some way. Thank God the oil filter is safety wired because that would spin loose long before the oil cooler lines that are almost completely blocked off by the heat distortion and kinks they have all over them would fail. I seen lawnmowers less cobbled together than that thing.

Looks like all the hoses on this P28 needs replacing. As a matter of fact the whole engine compartment needs some attention. New Baffles new hoses clamps . As I can see you have no Carb heat or cabin heat. I hope youre not offended but looks like these things were just difered and never fixed during the 100 hr or annual. Frankly if I were to open the cowling and see all this I wouldnt fly the airplane.Not because of air worthiness just because I knew the owner was trying to be cheap by not fixing the issues. I am sure his AP has told him about the carb heat hose and cabin heat hose many times because that hose doesnt get that bad of shape in just one annual inspection. Those hoses have probably needed replacing for years as well as the Baffles. When my life depends on everything working I spare no expense on maintenence. This isnt a car you can just pull over to the side of the road lol I would seriously have your owner fix these things

great, suck the heated air intake tube flat, and the rusted springs so they can gouge the cylinder walls resting on the rings, and short the plugs, mess up the valves and valve seats. I've seen this before, and it ain't pretty, but it is pretty expensive, and rather risky being up in the air. Great job explaining everything and showing where. I was in the Air Force, and we had Tail Number "shadow" mats, where all the parts went during disassembly, exchange, and rebuild. The A&P log book was on a log rack, or wall for sign off.

Very good video! Now, is the Lycoming ready to be overhauled? I wouldn't be taking that plane anywhere in the visual condiion it is in. Fuel and vacuum lines bubbled and collapsed? Plugs encrusted by carbon - a natural conductor of electricity. Wires that look old and insulation stiff enough to break or crumble off causing a short? Rust deep on exhaust pipes and flywheel? That Lycoming neeeds money and TLC before it flies again. Could that plane been in storage too long? You may be able to get away with that deterioration in a car, but not in any piston aircraft.

Why would they want the air/fuel mixture to cool the oil right before entering the cylinders? Wouldn't that warm the air, making it less dense and therefore make the engine perform slightly worse? Or because it would be the same quantity of air already having been mixed, would performance not change?

I wanted to see the lines going to the alternator. One of the lines to our alternator keeps resting on the muffler and then we (club plane) get alt light. The line runs to the right side of the alternator and it also has a small black wire attached to it there. What is going on with that? Our tech doesn't seem to think the wire resting on the muffler/exhaust is a problem..This is a new build since we had a ground fire and we did repairs. I'm going to zip tie it today and see what happens.

nice video. How much time is on the engine? Perhaps the next video could compare accessory condition with 500hrs, 1000hrs, 1500hrs etc. Too many times a cheap part ignored becomes a major expense.
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 7 жыл бұрын
That engine has right around 1000hrs and is 7 years old. It's had a hard life being near the saltwater based on the west coast of Florida. Certainly some cheap parts have caused major damage (bad exhaust gaskets at only a few $$ each). Also an A&P was trying to diagnose a bad mag and which cylinder was not firing, he did a water test by spraying water on the exhaust to see which was the cold cylinder. Problem was he didn't have water in a spray bottle handy so he used degreaser in a spray bottle that had pretty high acid content and did some serious corrosion acceleration to the spark plugs and #2 and #4 intake pipes (wasn't very careful with his spraying). If you look closely you'll see the paint peeling and chemical drip marks.

Because of the tolerances, required maint schedules, average labor hours required, and "expertise" / licensing / certifications required. You can't just back-yard mechanic an aircraft to fly without putting yourself or someone else in some serious danger, unlike a car where you can 9/10 times just pull off to the side of the road.
@tfilter6
@tfilter6 6 жыл бұрын
The aircraft in the video must have had a backyard mechanic, certainly not a professional. If I were to be asked to work on that one, I would insist that a whole lot of things be fixed before I would certify anything I did on it. I don't even let my cars get that ratty under the hood. I kind of think this aircraft is not being used but the new oil filter makes me wonder. Maybe it's used just for ground run-up demonstrations.

@@tfilter6 The oil filters always look new on flight school planes, they get changed every couple of weeks.

Great vid!! Very informative. One question.....Why the wire on the oil filter? I mean cars dont need one, right?. I assume its to make sure it stays in place. Anyway, just wondering. Keep the videos coming!!!
@bongofury67
@bongofury67 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, now that I think about it, that was a dumb question. If that oil filter spun off you could have a seize in midair. Not good. At least with a car you could just pull over. Im new at this. Sorry, my bad.

Why do many small airplanes´ engines still have carburetors ?!?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 7 жыл бұрын
It's just the way they were certified way back when...very expensive to update them. Many of the new airplanes are certified with fuel injected engines. Airplanes typically always lag behind the car innovations a bit.

What do you think about the cam shafts in that engine? I'm considering buying a 67'.... Last flight was in 94'. 1730 hrs.

Uh, that sounds like a scary prospect. I wouldn't touch it til it had 25-50 hrs on it within the past year and then take a look in the oil filter and maybe pop a jug and look at the cam.

It's how you will be billed for the airplane rental, basically it is a small clock that measures time in hours and tenths of an hour. A tenth of an hour (0.1) usually costs you $15 or so when renting, so while it would be totally dishonest to mess with the system, we all like to joke about how to make it run a little slower or not work at all.

Good lord, I have Seadoo watercraft in my store with less corrosion, not too mention better technology. I am surprised they don't use a stainless hose clamp around the oil filter to use with the safety wire vs. relying on that little tang.

50 year old airplanes living near saltwater certainly do not fair well. On top of that it would be great to swap many components to SS, but it has to be FAA approved parts, and they are generally zinc or non-anodized aluminum at best.
