My first trip to the Toledo NNL was in 1989. Went to Dayton OH the night before for a gathering at Randy Derr’s house. Got to meet Wayne Moyer, Randy, Bill Coulter and a bunch of other big names in the hobby. We stayed at Wayne’s house and I spent hours marveling at the seemingly thousands of 1/43 models he had. The next day we drove up to Toledo and that was another mind blowing experience. Those were the days!!!

It "was" a Great magazine and Sorely Missed !

I think that under the right management, SAE would still be around now. I know lots of people who loved the magazine and would have continued to purchase it.

@@davidimrie6916 I Absolutely Agree. I know I would certainly continue to purchase it IF it was still around. Cheers ~

Tim Boyd had done the model columns in Street Rodder Magazine for years until his job at Ford prevented it. Later I did model columns in Rod & Custom '94-98.
@davidimrie69163 жыл бұрын
I also enjoyed the Movie car columns you did in Car Modeler. Boyd should compile all his Street Rodder articles into one book and you should too.

Thanks for that! I have daydreams of doing a model car magazine at some point in the murky future, but I have to get my novels published first and relocate to Alabama. Plans include a serious NNL model car show in Huntsville as well. Gimme time...

@@rickr442 No problem. Didn't you also write an article for SAE on the Toby Halicki auction??
@rickr4423 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Dave i did. That article did no justice to the nightmare that the Halicki event turned into. What a mess! Five thousand people, four thousand lots, NO SECURITY!

I remember going to a hobby shop chain called Leisure World(Canada), now closed, for all my kits, paints, etc. I never bought magazines on the hobby but found books at the library for tips. One tip was rubbing the wheels on sandpaper to make them look realistic. Great video!

Funny that you're showing them magazines, I have most of those scale magazines, I used to build models way back in the 80s, and used to buy the magazines. 👌😎👍I even used to order parts from msc, they had the best array of parts and products to make your models more realistic looking. Great magazines indeed. 👍

Those old SAE mags were amazing, I started buying it in about 1996 as a very special order (I'm in the UK). Fantastic, love these vids.

Thanks for the detailed hat tip to Gary Schmidt and SA with an E! Did you go to the Western Classic NNL in 1986 in North Hollywood?

No. That was two years before I discovered SAE and model car contest. I heard of it.

The weird thing with the ‘66 Nova here in the United Kingdom was we waited forever for it to be released here then the pro street version appeared first and the stock version came about three months later. Back when AMT/Ertl had offices and a huge model kit distribution centre in Exeter in the UK. I loved the Revell Skips series, bought several of the ‘55 Chevys, nice kits, available in at least five local shops and very affordable.
@davidimrie69163 жыл бұрын
I've always liked the Gary Schmidt era of the magazine before they were sold to Kalmbach. In my opinion, in 2001 that was the downward slide for the magazine and it was no surprise that the magazine is gone.

I really wish I had a greater awareness of this wonderful hobby back in 1988, I was foolishly entranced by the Commodore Amiga at the time....yeah, that brand really went the distance! Scale modeling endures.

I was 18 at the time I remember that nova started a kick off of new tooling that kept up into the 90s by amt and revell and monogram it was a awesome time even the Johan kits were still easy to get. Model empire is in west allis wi it used to be called hobby town I used to take the bus there all the time in the early 80s to mid 80s until I got my driver's license then I drove there every weekend, I still go there today at age 50.

Boy it's not even a year and I miss sae already. I think when kalmbach took over it became more of a industry mag than a modeler mag. I was flipping though some of my 80s saw and found tons of how to s templates ect with diagrams. Far different than what you saw in the 2000s and than after. Also sae was more of a readers oriented mag with reader rides and picts of modelers own models. Also the authors were well known in the mag. Towards the end of sae run my subscription ran out a they replaced the balance of it with some kind of military airplane tank mag but it just wasn't the same. I let run out never even opening the plastic wrapping on some. I wish they would reconsider restarting sae I still miss it especially the way it was
