12/08/2022 Hello Ship. This boat must love you guys. A lot of this work could be much harder if she did not love you. This old girl knows and feels your love and therefore she allows you to work without interference. Every foot step, every word, the children and the laughter of all who have worked on board. I believe that some things have a living soul. I do not know why but this boat was made with the sweat falling on many of the planks. The oak was a living tree. It gave its all as demonstrated by the still 78 year old planks and beams. She stood still while you worked even when the tide floated her again and again. I believe that when you take her to sea she will reward you with the most love from an old boat. She knows! 5 months ago good work guys. It is really taking shape again. Don usa

Dakota Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal on September 8, 2009, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. Meyer is the second-youngest living Medal of Honor recipient, the third living recipient for either the Iraq War or the War in Afghanistan, and the first living United States Marine in 38 years to be so honored. Meyer "personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe."

Its great to see everything progressing, its not always fast but steady as she goes is maybe best ;-) Totally impressed by the hard work you both do, and even include the kids sometimes, they have a great youth working together with their parents on a great ship. And love the funny remarks of the both of you :-) I keep following this channel and hopefully will see it one day floating and sailing away from the mud it was stuck so long in. I always cry when I see al the ships around it rotting away, nice to see at least one that's being saved.

Bang on !!! I run mine off a heavy duty extension lead and it blows the trip when it's had enough. Always times about right to go and make a brew whilst it cools down and then i can strike an arc again. If you use 'em enough at high amperage, then i find my cycles get shorter.

My cheap little arc welder is the same, 20% Duty cycle at max settings. Which is 2mins welding 8 mins waiting to cool back down. Rinse and repeat. Only the industrial ones can go at max settings all day without stopping.

I know I've said this before but I can't help myself. Its so amazing that your keel and your planks are in such great shape and that only thing you've had to replace thus far is the frames themselves that's amazing when you really think about it. Is that Luck or what? your so fortunate to only have to as I said replace just the frames. Of course you have to replace basically everything on the house of the deck but still your blessed that way. The front of the ship is looking great its incredible really how much work you've all accomplished on this ship so far btw the bilge is looking great ..congrats.

Get those steel parts grit blasted and zinc metal sprayed and epoxy primed. Hot dip galvanised is good but it doesn't take primers very well. Both take off the mill scale for a better grip on the finish coating. Water grit blasting is good. The steel will flash-rust, but that's handled with phosphoric acid and primer over the top.

Remember the days with my dad at the boatyard back in the 60s, when he used to do the tarring it was a paraffin paint striper burner, always soften up the old tar first, with heat and turps, heat it up first then pour turps and stir it, that way he could get the old tar out without doing damage and reuse the old tar PS I use to think the same about Branson, until I learned he was in with Blair and PPI, so he could get his hands on NHS property. Never thought much off him afterwards

Hi Guys, nice progress, well done. Simon, your welding is fine, 10 minutes continuous on steel of that thickness is actually pretty good, so worry not. Have you considered Cold applied Bitumen Paint? It's worth a look before you commit to Hot. Dont be offended, I'm not trying to be a wet blanket. I saw my mate splashed with the hot bitumen, the burns are horrific, even if you get cold water on the burn immediately. If you're committed to Hot, watch the temperature very closely. Once you get it warm and reasonably fluid, turn the heat right down. My mate got it on his forearm and it took weeks of hospital visits to re-dress before it healed, and he has the scar for life. The other caution with hot bitumen is, once it gets fluid enough to use, it's very close to it's flashpoint. If god forbid it does flash, do NOT try to put it out with water, that's like pouring water into a burning chip pan, it would just explode covering everyone and everything. Kill the heat first then put maybe a piece of steel over the top of the pan to exclude air and suffocate the flames. You can use Dry Powder but, It takes a long time to cool down, and if it's got too hot it keeps re-igniting itself. Also if it catches light there would be huge volumes of thick black smoke. Use good PPE especially gloves and a full face visor, and no bare arms. If you can, it might actually be safer to heat it up in the open, not below deck, and ladle smaller amounts into a metal bucket or similar to take below. Water or moisture and hot bitumen are bad news if they come into contact with each other.

I also recommend powder coating. I powder coat my MGTD chassis restorations and even powder coated the sheetmetal prior to re-timbering the body structures. The powder is an epoxy and once heated and cure is nearly indestructible and your steel will be permanently sealed with no future corrosion.
