Sheela Bhatt is a veteran journalist with a career spanning over four decades and has covered a host of beats as a field reporter and has also donned the roles of an editor and publisher. Sheela is known for her work as a crime journalist and she has interviewed all mafia dons of Mumbai’s underworld, which include Karim Lala to Vardarajan Mudaliar and Chhota Shakeel to Dawood Ibrahim. She is one of the few journalists who has interviewed Dawood in-person at his Dubai home and is known to have had access to the mafia don for years. Recently, a picture posted by Sheela on her Twitter account went viral on social media in which she can be seen sitting with Dawood interviewing him. Apart from field journalism, Sheela has covered all general elections since 1979 and continues to write on politics, international affairs, among others. In this edition of ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Sheela talks about her entry into journalism, her personal life and marriage to Kanti Bhatt and the transition from being a revenue reporter to running a magazine of her own. She also talks about the Godhra riots and how religion is being used for defining politics.

Honesty stumbles, speaks half sentences, fumbles..but it shines through. Cause it doesn't just know how to 'act' and say what the viewer wants to listen to. Seen and heard such honesty in a long time..and the patriotism is raw. She is a living encyclopaedia amongst all journos..salute!

Used to read Kanti Bhatt's articles in a local newspaper until he was alive and after his demise too. Today first time saw his wife and now I remember all he used to write about Sheelaji and their romance and how all started.. Woww.. Both husband and wife r so similar and the passion for their work is evident in their words ! Truly amazing.. and bold fearless journalist make a difference in society... I'm sure to say that u must make part 2 of this conversation and definitely bring her back and talk about her relationship with kanti bhatt and how it's so inspiring the way she took care of him in his last days as I read.. Overlooking some contradictory aspects of her interview, this one really struck the cord.. tq.

When you say Barkha failed as a journalist ( eg. her coverage of 26/11 lead to a security vulnerability) then you expose her hypocrisy. But when you casually hand out labels like presstitute ( short for press prostitute ? ) , you only reflect on your upbringing.

Great interview. Great insight. Outstanding stories. Kudos to Smita Prakash for presenting this gem. I remember reading columns of husband wife duo Mr & Mrs Bhatt on Chitralekha in 80s. One thing that bothered me a lot in this interview is that Mrs Bhatt kept moving from one topic to another losing original point in focus. Understandably, she had a lot to share with details from her years of experience in journalism. I can tell that Smita tried so hard to get her guest back on the track failed miserably every time she tried. This interview nevertheless is epic due to unheard stories presented from my time. Those born in 60s and 70s can relate with every word she said. It’s truly nostalgic!

Sheela ben’s husband Kantibhai was a noted Journalist. he was once disturbed and wanted to cut short his life. While contemplating to commit suicide sitting in Mumbai Local by jumping off the train, he heard two guys sitting behind him chatting about him. “Have you heard Kanti Bhatt’s Analysis of India-Pakistan war on Radio ? What an amazing analysis !” Unaware of the fact their subject was sitting hlbehind them. However, Hearing this had a miraculous effect on Kantibhai and he called off his plan and got the zeal to live life again and became renowned columnist & Journalist.

I met Sheela Bhatt once in 1986 in Baroda when she visited his brother’s home. I had discussed with her little and was really impressed by her style of reporting. My name is Dr. Prajapati. She may not remember but I still. She is really knowledgeable compared to these Sardesai , Rubbish, etc

It was joyful to listen to her and that cheer on her face while talking about Kareem LaLa makes me wonder that she was very well aware that he was no criminal, just an Alpha leading the pack. Her view of India is so panoramic, nothing left to capture.

I have known her since her debut as a journalist and also her husband Kanti Bhatt. Dedicated to their profession in letter and spirit. I also salute Smita too for taking her interview. Even at the age of 64, Sheela still looks younger in the field of journalism. Today's media sells its soul but deodorizes its body. Now a days, we see gutter journalists of ABP news, TV9, India Today etc.

As a keralite, i have experienced mumbai life and delhi life. Delhi people are atitudewise very harsh comparing with mumbai's loving people . Even yhe police over there is tat poor wen u ask for any help whereas in mumbai yhe people or the police, everyone is so helpful and cordial even the trolley pullers on the streets or the chaiwalas..they deserve lots of love n respect .... Delhi is not my cup of tea .. Being from south, culturelly also we can connect with the marathi people. 90 % of the people were rude and arrogant in delhi whether it is the street seller, the chaiwala, the bus drivers, people who sits int the post offices were that low in attitude and extending help ... Mumbai ❤❤❤❤

Thats basically Delhi. Thats not towards South Indians particularly.. Delhi people are like that towards everyone.. even themselves. It is a sad situation but cant be helped. Its their way of life. I am a Maharashtrian.. i studied in Kota. One day I was talking on phone with my family in Marathi... And after the call my north Indian friends said which south indian language were you speaking? 😂.. and that day my little bubble shattered that Maharashtra is not South India. Everything below the Hindi Belt is basically South for them.
