What a great conversation! My husband grew up through the Steamfitters union on the technical side 35-40 years ago. Never got a degree past high school. But he took every certification he could and was able to mold a career that would look like that of an engineer (electrical, construction). His final projects were in Fortune 50 pharmaceutical plants building highly technical/specialized processing and skyscrapers in Philadelphia managing large teams of Fitters. Our heads exploded in the USA thinking a college degree was the only way to good career path. My husband and many of his Fitter brothers have done far better in their careers and they all started with apprenticeships. Hopefully, a mindset change will kick in and all career paths will be viewed as good paths and practicing through apprenticeship will become more acceptable.
