Here's some possible aircraft influence: I'm told that the taper pin near the firewall on the manual transmission shift linkage is the sort of thing commonly used on aircraft. Also, these cars use a lot of nylock nuts - the ones that have an nylon insert to prevent loosening - while other cars of its era used lock washers for this purpose.

Greetings from New Zealand. I have found your 900 refresh series very inspiring as I plan on giving my 900 EMS a 30 year old birthday present. New rings, bearings, all seals and gaskets, chain, tensioners. Will also get a cam re-grind for some more meaty mid range oomph :) When i get some more coin a custom sports exhaust and a respray would be nice also. As for B202 durability my engine has 336,000 kilometers on the clock, original head gasket ( small oil weep) and timing chain/tensioners ( bit of a rattle on startup ) and she still has 195 psi in all four cylinders.

I'm inspired by your engine's long life on it's original components. They are tough engines. I'm spending far more money on this project than the car is worth right now, but like you I don't expect to let it go anytime soon so it's not a major concern. Something else that has impressed me is the quality of materials. So far, I have not come across a single nut or bolt that could not be undone or that failed in the process (except that lone exhaust stud - expected).

The saab 9000 had a fasten seatbelt display by the rear view mirror and the light there was the same type as in a airplane, id love that feature in my saab 95

Love the videos Lee! I am living vicariously though you watching these episodes while my '88 3spd convertible sits in the driveway. I'm dealing with rust right now, but always wanted to do a 5spd conversion! Looking forward to more videos.

I expect it to fully transform the car's personalty. Being a convertible, I know it will never be a true performance car. But, having full control over the turbo's power band sure makes for a more kinetic experience. I am very lucky that my 900 is largely rust-free save for the wheel arch bubbling which seems to come with the territory.

Glad you're following along. I'll drop by someday and give you the keys so you can compare it to your Porsche. They are both convertibles, but that's about all they have in common.

To give naysayers a good representation of the power that was delivering: 2.0L 16 valve turbo made 160-185 HP and a 188-201 ft lbs torque. The 5.8L (almost 3 times the displacement) V8 (twice the cylinders) in my 1988 Ford Bronco was so choked up on emissions crap that it only made 170-210 hp, 275-325 ft lbs torque. And that was just at the crank! The C6 automatic is estimated to sap 50-60 hp for drivetrain losses... So for a small four cylinder to push torque numbers almost worth of a V8....thats what we call swedish engineering!

That Swedish efficiency is one of the things I like about this car. It can deliver solid gas mileage, yet reward you when the right foot goes down. Driving to Michigan for this episode kzbin.info/www/bejne/epung6t_nbueidk I got 27 mpg at 70mph+.

the b202 was factory tested up to 500hp with stock components.

Any idea how they generated that much power? Different cam, more boost and fuel flow? I'd like to learn how they got that much with stock parts.
@YourAverageEmile
@YourAverageEmile 7 жыл бұрын
Higher boost with stronger turbo, bigger fuel injectors, bigger intercooler, highflow exhaust manifold and better piping are really all that's needed, the cam from the b202 are used today by tuners because they have a more aggressive timing. The pistons and cylinders are great as they endure a high amount of heat without melting och cracking, same reason they are also used by tuners in newer cars such as the 9-5 where the pistons tend to melt at around 300bhp. Although the headgasket and other seals are not big fans of to high boost so they tend to get destroyed before you reach 500bhp. But change those to newer models in metal and with higher tolerance then they can handle some serious power

I found your videos through the Reddit post your son made a few weeks ago. I do basic-to-moderate difficulty repair work on my own car to keep costs down while I'm in Graduate school. In the past five years I've had to replace my starter motor, brakes, shocks, engine mounts, thermostat, and wheel bearings (assembly) on my 2000 Ford Focus. I started with zero knowledge of this sort of work and simply learned everything from KZbin videos people posted. I enjoy your videos to learn about the more complex systems of vehicles and particularly the history behind them.The professionalism of your videos sets them apart from the average how-to videos.

Very impressive learning curve. KZbin is an amazing resource. It's my #1 destination to learn how to fix just about anything.

Greetings from SAAB-country (Sweden). You should always renew the studs for the exhaust manifold when possible! Just did the headgasket operation and suffered a broken off one. What a pain! They do have to take quite some heat and get brittle with time! Follow my advice and renew! For your own sake! :-) Thx for a great channel!

Thanks for the suggestion. All new studs came with the head gasket kit, so we're good to go. The stud that snapped on me was below the surface, so I handed it to a machine shop rather than risk causing damage trying to drill it out. I asked for permission to shoot them removing the stud and include it in the series, but the guy doing the work was too shy. Because they said no, the shop owner refused to charge me for any of the work. I'll find a way to spend money them in the future in return for that kindness.

There are 9 more on the project plan as the car goes through various stages of reassembly. Frankly, I'm amazed at the response. It's been great fun for me to engage with Saab fans around the world. Is there something specific you'd like to see?

In my head, you also should changed the gear for the timing chain too. If the chain is stretched, it may have worn the old gear so that the old gear will damage the new chain.
@LeeKelso
@LeeKelso 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, the chain wasn't seriously stretched. When I compared the original with the replacement the difference was just a few mil. I suspect there was no need to change the chain at all. But, since I had no record of it ever being done it made sense for peace-of-mind. Same with the head gasket.

Lee Kelso the Viggen is the direct influence of aeronautics though some things in the c900 for instance the completely useless fold down cup holder in the glove box. The SPG seats are another aspect... a tight hug as if you were bound in flight. The shape of the car from the old 96 to the og 9-3s show a real consideration for flight idealism...

I could suggest the layout of the electrics, with the heat-sensitive insulation and dirt-sensitive relays and fuses kept on the far side of a bulkhead from the engine proper as far as possible. I've seen people troubleshooting and repairing newer GMs, and nothing about their layout makes any sense to me. Another important aspect is the weight, balance and handling. In aircraft, the flight dynamics are of constant concern throughout the design process, and this continues with the pilot as he is required to check his weight and balance are within operational limits, which the designers have of course made as wide and flexible as they can. Saab considered the handling of the 900 series to be one of its safety features, allowing an alert driver to avoid trouble more easily than most ordinary cars of the time.

How about the difference in the left timing chain guide? The original one looks quite different than the new one you put in. By my car the right chain guide is also different. I'm rebuilding an early 1984 16 valve from februari. Had loads of problems with it. Turned out the be a cracked cilinder head. Got the engine out, and i'm planning to replace all wear components and gaskets.

Congratulations on digging in. If you don't already have one, get a good torque wrench on hand. Mine proved to be frustrating.

luckily my dad has loads of good tools in our garage, so that is not a problem. What is a problem is that my B202 engine is from '84, Bentley's manual for the B202 16 valve starts from '85. Also lots of parts needed for the rebuild seems just a little different. Most things will fit, but not all. Like the crankshaft gear that I orderd. Should be able to fit '84 engines according to many suppliers. But it doesn't. Its almost 2 cm longer. Pretty annoying :(.

Lee ,did you also renew your distributor? In Australia they are as rare as hens teeth.The best you can do is try and find a good second had one.They can fetch up to $250.00 Aus dollars.Any ideas?
@LeeKelso
@LeeKelso 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did replace my distributor, but it was when I bought the car a couple years ago and I don't recall where I got it or how much I paid. I'm seeing new ones here for $175 at RockAuto.com so with shipping it might be close. Recently watched the TV series WANTED and thought about how much fun it would be to my 900T on some of the roads they showed in Australia and New Zealand. Beautiful. Hope you get to rip them up soon.
