I take turmeric everyday for my knees. 15 years ago I was diagnosed with cancerous colon polyps, so every 3 years I have a colonoscopy, however the last time I had one I was clear, I had been taking turmeric for 3 years, I told the gastrointestinal surgeon that I was taking it and had changed nothing else, he told me to keep taking it and I didn’t need to go back to him for 5 years, which is this year as it happens.

Something a lot of people don't talk about that's very important to note is that Turmeric can inhibit some Iron absorption, which arguably is good or bad depending if you're someone who has high Iron levels or if you're deficient in Iron. Being deficient thankfully you could take ginger, or vitamin C with Tumeric to help Iron absorption!

I throw equal amounts of fresh turmeric and ginger in the blender and add it to a jar with a little honey, ground pepper and lemon zest. I keep it in the fridge and take a teaspoon a day straight from the jar. We've been adding turmeric to our cooking for quite a while, now, and feeling pretty good about doing it. However, I came across a couple of different news items that said significant amounts of lead that have been found in spices, turmeric being the one with the highest levels and the most abundantly available. The article said it was added to enhance color and add weight. The samples were purchased from stores like Whole Foods and other supermarkets. The article said the amounts found could pose a health risk, especially to children. My question for you is: Have you heard about this and, have you found out if there is any credence to these reports? After coming across these stories, I have stopped adding it to our food. If there is any veracity to these reports, I figure it is better to be safer than sorry. What are your thoughts?

I'm sure most of you who watch T.D regularly are aware of this, but if you pause the video when Thomas refers to the studies, it is the curcumin within turmeric that is doing all this work. What do you think about turmeric supposedly being one of the highest oxolate-containing plants? Oxolates in high quantities (turmeric has very high levels) can cause gut inflammation and other issues which may negate some of the benefits of taking it. Maybe we'd be better off if we were taking an extract, perhaps?

@@MoJams901 Oxolates are very water soluble. So if you did a fat-based extract (liposomal usually is), then oxolates should not be a problem. But turmeric also has other compounds that are beneficial too, not just curcumin. That's why it's tricky to just extract one compound from the plant and assume you have all the benefits. Turmeric is a complex plant. Look up the list of "active compounds" in Turmeric and the list is miles long. Curcumin just has the most research on it as an isolated substance.

Do you think a supplement that has the turmeric in it or the regular turmeric spice powder you have in your spice cabinet is what you need? I love your videos and nutrition breakdown but some simple, basic conclusions would benefit your lay people. When you say turmeric helps the mitochondria are you saying how much? It’s like saying mushrooms have beneficial nutritional value but no one says you’d have to eat a truckload of them for any significant benefit.

Would recommend getting organic as cheap tumeric can contain dyes and heavy metals.. You can google how to tell if your tumeric powder is adulterated or not; essentially place on top of warm water and see if the solids sink (non-adulterated) or if the water turns bright orange. I found getting organic tumeric with black pepper in cellulose capsules is the best bet; I normally break the capsule into water, but the measurements are already there for me.

Great, but what is the best source of turmeric? Best way to take it, right amount, best time, and what other ingredients, if any should it be consumed with for best absorption? What, if any, ingredients could hinder absorption, so you can avoid taking them along with turmeric?

This past spring I took a mixture of turmeric, black pepper and apple cider vinegar mixed with water every morning. I did it for about 6 weeks if I remember right. At about week 4 I started having pretty severe pain in my upper right side, under my ribs particularly when I would take deep breaths. Especially at the top and bottom of each breath. I thought I was having gall stones (maybe it was?) Anyway, I was telling a friend about it and she suggested maybe it was a detox effect on my liver? It scared me enough that I quit taking it. I still had the pain for a little while but it stopped completely about 2 weeks after I quit. Now I'm kind of nervous to start it again. Has anyone else heard of this problem? Was my friend on to something?

I starting taking tumeric curcumin pills for a week. I started to feel better than ever. The inflammation in my body went down like with nothing I've ever tried before. I told my doctor what I was taking and told me that I had to be careful because it raises liver enzymes.

Hi Thomas: Thanks for all the information but can you clarify the following. In this video, are you talking about the benefits of Turmeric or just curcumin? Are all the different benefits you mention here from either, or, or both Turmeric and curcumin? What I am taking mentions only the curcumin content and not any other compounds that turmeric contains. Thanks in advance.

Although Curcumin has been studied the most, whole turmeric is better overall as it contains many analogs of Curcumin (called Curcuminoids) which have a more wide and varied medicinal effect on different cells in the body.

Would be nice to talk about the side effects as well !!! Everything you take can be useful for some and harmful to others. For example tumeric supplements reduces testosterone a lot, it also reduces immune system ability and many more. So please give a overview of both sides in your videos. Thomas, since mTOR and the Inflammation Pathway are involved with muscle growth and Curcumin can impair both, it seems like we would need to time Curcumin intake to take advantage of all of its other positive effects without slowing down muscle growth. I don't see how to use it.
