19:32 this is where we split from reality. Drew read that and took away "mailbox hysteria. The way I got the information the "mailbox thing" was much more about the sorting machines being removed just a few weeks before the election which by all measures will be an unimaginable influx in snail mail. And all of the sudden just weeks before the election post offices get crippled by this appointee of one of the candidates, who would also happen benefit from the least amount of votes being counted. A post office which was already not ready for the influx. When I got that news the mailbox thing was like oh and this too, but it's probably nothing, but Dr Drew that's all he heard.

There have been analyses done by experts and it does seem likely that we may not have the full election results until 5-10 days after the election and if the final results differ from what the results appear to be on election night, chaos and mass hysteria on epic proportions will ensue. This is due to the deliberate slowing down of mail delivery right before an election during a pandemic that will have the most mail in votes the country has ever seen, the vast majority of which are going to go to the opposition party. But yeah just brush it off as people being hysterical. Lets watch the crazy random blue haired sjw and act as if thats the left wing but make sure to clarify that actual sexists are hardly existant on the right wing.

@@cjtherou4427 Yup, the Red Mirage, if anyone wants to search it by name. Vote early or in person, if you can safely. I'd like to be diplomatic about saying both sides here, but this would be a deliberate strategy, by Republicans, to steal an election they lost through a loophole in the constitution. End result is a theft of democracy by the presidency being decided by the majority of states(not representatives) in the House of Representatives deciding the next president. It's bad enough the majority candidate doesn't win, but now they are going to the last desperate measure and our lives are being decided by the small states unfair grip over the majority.

Simulacra and Simulation is definitely an important book for modern times. If anyone reads it, keep in mind that you are inside it already. I imagine many people might not really understand that the thing they think he's getting at is actually what he is getting at. We, by and large, are very close to being incapable of distinguishing fiction from reality. Talk to someone about a videogame. Listen to the words they say. "This guy was shooting at me, so I popped out and shot my rocket launcher at him." Something like that would be a very common thing to say about a videogame play session. And while people will tell you that they know a game was being talked about, and that it was not real, they typically only mean that the setting of the game was not real. They will describe the game as 'realistic' and rob the word of all meaning, proving that they have failed to distinguish between fiction and reality. Not just the setting is fiction. The characters depicted on screen are not 'realistic'. They are animated poor approximate images. They are 2 dimensional. They are only a few inches tall even on a huge screen. They do not move as actual human beings do. They do not share anything at all, in fact, in common with an actual human being except that they can be understood to be a reference image which is meant to be understood as a depiction of a fictional character. To think of a videogame character in this way, considering the actual flatness of the image, considering the total lack of similarity in any of the features except the minimal to a real person, considering the height of the image on the screen as its REAL height, is something that never occurs to the vast majority of adults, and especially not those who advocate censorship on a wide scale or a small personal one. The same is true of movies and other media. While people acknowledge the stories of movies as fictional, they view the depictions as real. They hear celery snapping or carrots breaking when a punch looks like it landed between a couple actors and they say this is 'realistic violence'. Real punches sound like meat slapping meat. They 'hear a gunshot' despite real gunshots leaving ears ringing. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the idea of 'living in a simulation.' It has everything to do with the real material of our reality, and mistaking simulation for it at a very low level. We expect people to respond identically to an image as they do in actual experience. We expect people to apply the same moral standards to a simulation as to real human beings taking actual actions. At the same time that fidelity of fictional representations have improved, the breadth of real experience people encounter has decreased, which only makes these mistakes easier to make. Consider, for instance, that a child growing up today will most likely reach age 18 having never seen more than a handful of human beings nude, while they will have seen screens displaying usually manipulated, edited, curated images of the bodies of others. This is not a problem with the images. This is a problem with the interpretation of images, and it can only be deeply solved with real experiences. That is the surest and quickest way to solve it on an intuitive level, if not an intellectual one. No one should be permitted past middle school unless they can explain the actual meaning behind Rene Magritte's "The Treachery of Images" painting. Dr Drew: About the caller talking about hallucinations during sex - this is not as concerning as you seem to think it is. Hallucinations during orgasm are well-documented. They're not crazy common, but they absolutely do happen, ranging from out-of-body hallucinations to full-blown multi-sensory hallucinations that seems to last for a long time. If the person does go see a doctor, they absolutely DO need to mention that this only happens during sex. That makes the difference between 'brain tumor' and 'rare but normal.' The book 'Everything You Know About Sex Is Wrong' includes citations of scientific papers about it and a collection of different stories from people who experience it (along with other rare sexual facts).

Drew was born into a middle class household and I assume so were both of the comedians were talking about (whom i love btw) 4. Drew was able to get a student loan and good education because of that gentic lottery we talked about 5. Christina and Tom were both lucky enough to have a chance to be seen by someone in entertainment 6. And then hardwork right? If you start of 15m ahead of everyone else in a race it doesnt mean you didn't work hard it means you didn't have to work as hard who started at the starting line bud. Its a goddamn lottery and it shouldn't be. I'm a capitalist btw I just love capitalism enough to recognize its shortfalls so we can improve it as opposed to living in an illusion where we have a merit based society in totality. Hey R words, love the mixed discussion on philosophy, I honestly think a defunding of the arts and intellectual sciences have led to a paradigm of dismissing critical thinking and empathy as weakness... leading to an acceptance of this hyper reality. That soft touch of the void was a great little tid bit this episode, don't be afraid to explore theory or philosophy like that in the future. I feel like Dr Drew makes medically sensitive topics approachable, that 10 min of realism theory from main mommy was a fun and applicable discussion to get the gears turning. Deep entertainment.

Hey, loved this episode. Don't know if you ever read the comments, but I'm obsessed with Baudrillard and simulation theory (I know what Baudrillard was talking about was different). Just wanted to say, and this is super important, that simulations are useful for the exact reason that they are not reality. Like, with the map, it would not be useful if it was an exact replica of reality because then it would be the same size and scope of reality. Its use to us is precisely that it can fit into are hands. The problem is the confusing of simulations for reality. Like, I have had some criticism of some other episodes where transgender issues come up and there is a connection because if a transgender person says "I am a woman trapped in a man's body" this is just a shorthand way of communicating the inexpressible to the layperson. For what cisgender person could really understand exactly what it's like to be trans? The shorthand has a very important use but it is problematic when someone takes it literally. That is why transgender people are often accused of being delusional, for stating that they ARE x - this, too, is shorthand. Transgender people (I am trans btw) know the physical reality of their bodies, genitals, etc. so in that sense we/they are not stating something objectively untrue. Another very important point on this subject is that almost all knowledge is second or third order knowledge, that is, something we learned from some other source or that that source learned from another source. This is shorthand also, for it would be impossible for us to individually verify every fact of reality, but the real danger and why we are in the state we are in today is the lack of trust (it is one reason that there has been a rise in flat Earthers). So this is the real takeaway from this postmodern hyper-real - social cohesion and reliance on shared reality is falling apart due to the damage institutions have done to the public trust.

Marxism, in short, is where the working class seizes the means of production from the controlling class. So instead of some billionaire making all the profit while paying unlivable wages to their workers, not providing adequate healthcare, etc, the workers themselves collectively own the company and share the profits of their labor. No more "boss makes a dollar, i make a dime." We all gettin the dollar. Yes, Christina's parents fled a 'communist' controlled country, however the USSR was not Marxist. It was the founder's intentions to create a Marxidt state, but those intentions were sullied by flawed, greedy men over the course of decades

The point where the hyper-real became present in our culture was at ground zero when the survivors, when asked by our media, could not process the most real event that they had experienced in any way other than to describe it as if it was a film. We continue to re-experience events in our world that we can not process as real though we may have experienced it in a film - Contagion. Someday we need to learn how to deal with the present as it is? High and tight, everyday!
