Bit late but he uses a piece of chewing gum, trident.... Not really 3:11 he says it is felt... So you would use pieces of felt Please choose felt made from natural fiber like wool, not to use synthetic fiber

you could try to find scrap leather and save a lot of money check ebay or etsy for scrap leather
