The rest of The Beatles have all agreed that ever since Ringo sat in for Pete Best when they were playing in Hamburg, they knew Ringo was the missing piece that they needed. They knew how important Ringo was to the band, as the whole world does by now. Ringo, up their game to greatness, as each member did. Great reactions.

It was late 1963 - around Christmastime. JFK had just been assassinated, and we were all reeling from it. I was 10 years old waiting a few more months to turn 11 years old. Sharing a room with my older sister. Nighttime. We listened to KRLA, the pop station in Los Angeles at the time, at bedtime for one hour. And, on to our radio - after Bobby Vinton had crooned 'There I've Said it Again' - out of nowhere came this strange music: 'I Want to Hold Your Hand.' My sister and I both sat up in our beds and stared at each other. What on earth was that? The disc jockey played it a second time right after the first time, saying, 'I'm not sure I heard that right. Let's hear that again.' And then everything changed. The Beatles. What a memory.

@yes2day100 - I can't BELIEVE you both did and said the SAME thing I did on Dec.26, 1963 when I woke up to my clock radio playing "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" I TOO suddenly SAT UP in my bed (and I was NEVER one to wake up like that, usually rolled over to get a few more "winks") and I LOOKED at my radio and I ALSO said "WHAT ON EARTH WAS THAT!" But I had to wait a few hours before they played it again and I heard the name of the group. I was 16 that morning, soon to turn 17 in early March. You are right, everything DID change after that. I remember that moment like it was yesterday! It was like a "bolt out of the blue" that hit me. I was never the same again either, and I am STILL a die hard fan today, and always WiLL be. I NEVER tire of their music, even after listening to it for nearly 60 years!

It's so true that people who hear The Beatles today can't begin to grasp how much they were like something from another planet in 1964 America. Everything about them was completely different from everything else that came before, the music, the sound, the look, the accents, the humor, the HAIR! People today can't believe what a shock their hair was, but believe me, it was!

The difference musically and image wise between Bobby Vinton's "There I've Said It Again" [ an old song Vaugn Monroe did first in 1945 ! ] and The Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is like Dorothy Gale in the Wizard of Oz going from a black and white film, opening the cabin door and everything is in color in the Land of Oz, or the Bealtes in this case. Even though the Beatles were first presented in black and white on TV and their first film...we're talking music and image, not literally. Like the sleeping pill wore off and suddenly we were awakened!

I was also a teen in LA, heard "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand", over the PA at junior high, while we were waiting for the bus! We all said the same thing...Who is that?? Gives me chills to think we were witnessing our first taste of the Beatles' US invasion....a few weeks later we all watched their first performance on Ed Sullivan! I remember KRLA and KFWB giving us updates and coverage on their US visits! Great days..growing up and coming of age to Beatle tunes! They were there with us, through it all!

The Beatles are by far the greatest cover band in history. Their covers that they recorded between 1963-64 is unmatched and many of their covers often surpassed the originals. The original of this is great and a slower number but then The Beatles put their spin on it and rocked it up. John shreds the lead vocals and Paul and George are outstanding with their harmonies and backing vocals. Amazing stuff! All hail The Beatles, the greatest band ever and by far the GOAT'S of popular music. Peace ❤

I used to sing Til There Was You to my kids at bedtime. They are now in their 20's and 30's and remember it. Beautiful song and it resonates well with any age.

Comments by this original Beatlemaniac: Little Child: great backing harmonies (I'm so sad and lonely). John's voice is killer in the verses. And a great scream before the harmonica solo. The best harmonica solo he ever did. Outro vocal by Paul is excellent (oh yeah). Till There Was You: We thought this was schmaltzy at the time, but it helped the parents accept them. "I never sawr them at all...." Lol for the scouse accent. I thought they'd brought in a session player for the guitar solo; this really shows off George's skill and versatility at such an early age. Yes, great bongos by Ringo. Please Mister Postman: (Is this the same version as on the US album?) John's "pushed" vocal again is exceptional; but the other two with the backing harmonies - so good. George's vocal talent is underappreciated. SO great how they incorporated the "girl group" sound and made it a part of rock 'n roll.

On 'Little Child' Paul does one 'oh yeah' in the outro and that's it! Everything else in the song is John. He's double-tracked in places.

When you hit Revolver.......I think you will love Taxman a lot. Very underrated song. When you get to Abbey Road.....Oh Darling is a hidden gem. Enjoy the journey....you have many songs to do before you run into those two gems

I absolutely love all three of these songs. There is one of those breaks in Postman where John Lennon just cracks me up, where he sings, deliver the letter, the sooner the better, but the first time he uses the word the for the letter, he says it like thee, and there is almost a comedic ring to his voice, but it's all just so good.

Always LOVED the harmonica solo on "Little Child" I MISS harmonica on music, as the Beatles did so often on their early songs. Harmonica seemed to disappear from music after the '60s. Just LOVE me some harmonica LOL! Listen to the recorded version of "Please Mr.Postman" because it fades out here for the video. They do the clapping 2 more times and during the last line " DELIVER THE LETTER, THE SOONER THE BETTER" LUKE, I thoroughly enjoy watching and listening to your reactions and analysis to the Beatles catalogue. I SMILE through every one of them. I CAN RELATE to WRITING LETTERS and WAITING for their ANSWER, I started as a pen pal with a boy from England, and 6 years later we were married.

I'd heard this before, so I looked it up to be sure. (Till There Was You) Meredith Wilson's widow said his estate made more money in royalties from The Beatles than from the play it was written for. It had also been covered by multiple artists such as Anita Bryant and Peggy Lee, Sue Raney with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Etta Jones ... Still, his estate received more royalties from these four Liverpudlians.

I believe I read somewhere that for their Please please me record company audition, it was TIL THERE WAS YOU and McCartney's voice that whooed the execs into giving them a chance.

McCartney.s nervous singing was largely responsible for the failed Decca audition. It was just as bad at EMI on Love Me Do. The only thing the engineers found out of the ordinary was Lennon's harmonica. It was George Martins call and he signed them for their charisma.

I like all three songs but don't know which one can be identified as my favorite between second and third one, 'Till There Was You' is very romantic and sweet, great vocals and that solo guitar is remarkable, I feel transported to the sky, and the hill and a garden whenever I listen to it. 'Please Mr Postman' is also romantic and sad at the same time, with an awesome raspy lead voice and then those sweet harmonies, also the clapping, all in all the very best version of the song.

The harmonica jumping from side to side, along with vocals panned way to one side are symptoms of the limited recording technology of the time. Generally speaking, the first few Beatles albums were intended to be listened to in mono. When stereo recordings were required for stereo pressings, there wasn’t much they could do except present the songs with the wide divided stereo. The Beatles preferred mono, and when Beatles CDs were first released in 1987 the first four CDs were released in mono, not stereo at George Martin’s insistence. The separation is not so pronounced when listened to on loudspeakers, but headphone listening can be a very strange experience.

Those early “music videos” were pretty cringeworthy. But it’s still great to look back at them. I love this journey you’re taking Luke. I had the US version of “With the Beatles”. It was the same cover pic but was called “Meet the Beatles” Fantastic stuff! This music brings very warm memories. 🌺✌️

I think the Beatles early music videos (called "promo films" at that tine) were anything BUT "cringe worthy" they were and ARE FUN to watch, LOVED them back then and love watching those promo films now. NEVER tire of them.

Those first two tracks must be from the 2009 box set releases with the updated stereo mixes because they're not what I remember from the original Capitol LP (panning just wasn't done in those days!) "Little Child" is just a great slice of early Beatles rock music. As the story goes, George Martin and Brian Epstein pushed for the Beatles to record "Til There Was You" because they wanted a ballad to balance out the rockers they had already released. It helped move them up the ladder and gain credibility with an older audience, which opened doors to things like the Royal Variety performance, etc. That TV appearance for "Please Mr. Postman" is from the program Big Night Out, taped in February 1964 just after they'd returned from their first U.S. visit. Yeah, love the hand claps, part of the "mach schau" mentality that went back to the Hamburg days.

Till There Was You is from the musical The Music Man, By Meridith Willson, it was part of their nightclub act orignally. Willson complemented their performance on Ed Sullivan of his song, was flattered they did it, and said so publically, as opposed to so many adults dissing the Beatles over their long hair and loud "commie plot " music. George Harrison's guitar work on this is steller, and I doubt most other guitarists at the time like the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards could create such a musical accoustic solo like that because he was so cemented in rhythm and blues.

"Little Child" is just fun & makes you wanna dance! "Til there was You" is from "The Music Man" with Shirley Jones singing it. I ❤️ her version. It's my favorite. We used to see that movie of the musical evert year on TV. Paul got a couple of the lines wrong but it's a good version. I esp love the guitars in it. "Mr. Postman" was a Mowtown song & it was "nice." But the Beatles version ROCKS & is actually way better than the original!! John's vocals are incredible! Just my humble opinion.
