USA's Capital Records lable approach to albums was to use the singles to "sell" the albums, that was the mentality, so With the Beatles became Meet the Beatles and with less songs, therefore creating a Second Album shortly after with the missing songs from With the Beatles , some older singles like She loves You and a couple of new ones like You Can't DoThat, the flip side of Can't Buy Me Love over here in the USA. We NEVER saw the English albums until much later in the mid to late 1970's. The first time Beatles albums matched up with English Parlophone lable was in 1967 with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

His second song, YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO, recorded a few months later, was the WORST. From Wikipedia: In anticipation of the track's release on Anthology 1, McCartney announced: "there will be a bunch of people interested in hearing the George Harrison song from thirty years ago that no one to this day has heard - it's not the greatest thing George ever wrote, but it's an undiscovered nugget. If you find a little Egyptian pot, it doesn't have to be the greatest Egyptian pot. The fact that it is Egyptian is enough." Ultimate Classic Rock listed "You Know What to Do" as the worst of the Beatles' 227 officially released songs, stating: "When Harrison finally hit his stride, he became the Beatles' ace in the hole. But this early song ... shows why his songs were still being passed over at this point."

To me what makes The Beatles so special was how they changed throughout the years. 1962-64 was Beatlemania. Crazy live shows. They took early rock and roll and R&B and just made it livelier and better. It probably saved rock music which seemed to be dying. 1965 brought "Help" and Rubber Soul" with songs that one could really listen to the lyrics on headphones. Inspired by folk rock and pop. 1966-68 Psychedelic rock. Experimentation. Drugs. 1969-70 Subtle changes and new rock sounds from punk, new wave and even heavy metal. Music before its time.

Sometimes it's hard to gauge how innovative and new their sound was so many years later looking back I suggest for context you give the You Tube video - the most popular song of the month in the 1960s a listen, where the hits of the 1960s by month are included. you can definitely hear the difference when the Beatles came on the scene!!!! There is also a second most popular song of the month 1960s video as well.

I appreciate you listening and reacting to these songs with your 2024 ears. Keep in mind the Beatles topped the charts during this time, imagine listening to these songs in the early ‘60’s, they sounded like no one else at the time. I was 8 when I saw them for the first time on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 and my life was changed forever.

There were a lot of covers on the early records, but that’s fine, they were all awesome. He’s doing A Hard Days Night next I guess he’s skipping Beatles for Sale. My wife and I took a bus tour of Britain last July which included Liverpool which was awesome, seeing Penny Lane and the shelter in the middle of a roundabout and the statues near the Mersey River and seeing the reproduction of the Cavern is something I will never forget.

That said, I believe many of those bands would not have existed without the Beatles influence. I do believe he gets it and realizes this band is like no other.

Hey Darius, something important to keep in mind. The Beatles often did not include their singles on these albums. So, while you are getting the experience of the evolution of their albums, you’re not hearing their hit singles from the same time in a lot of cases. You may want to look into some of the tracks you’re missing as you go. That gets very important pretty soon in their evolution. Wikipedia has a nice discography of their singles and dates of release. Lennon had told Martin before they started working on what became "Let It Be" that he didn't want the kind of "production sh*t" that had become common on their recordings. Martin got frustrated with their bickering and was only sporadically involved in the recording sessions. He left most of the production work up to Glyn Johns. The group didn't like the mix that Johns proposed. Ultimately Phil Spector did a remix at the invitation of Lennon and Harrison, and that's what was released. Despite having worked on some of the recordings, Martin was told he wouldn't get a production credit because Spector produced the final version, which neither McCartney nor Martin thought was good. The group had already started working on what became "Abbey Road" in spring of 1969 when McCartney asked Martin to produce it. Martin said he would, but "only if you let me produce it the way we used to". McCartney accepted those terms.

The Beatles were still shaping their sound, distilling their influences into what would later become something all their own. The songwriting while good was still in it's infancy and yet it was better than anything on the charts at that time. Kudos for taking the journey through the Beatles catalog. They are hands down the most influential band in the history of rock.

It Won't Be Long gets overlooked....but it's a great opening track. All I've Got to Do.....Lennon trying to sing like Smokey Robinson, and he comes pretty close. All My Loving is one of Paul's classics and according to Beatles legend, the first song McCartney wrote the lyrics first and music second. Don't Bother Me is a fine songwriting debut from George with a killer guitar solo. Little Child is a tolerable throwaway. Till There Was You is pretty, but bland. Please Mr. Postman soars because of the vocals. Roll Over Beethoven shows the Stones weren't the only British band that credibly cover Chuck. Hold Me Tight is another one that sounds better than it should because of those Fab harmonies and beat. You Really Got a Hold on Me has one of Lennon's best vocals of the early era. I Wanna Be Your Man.....Ringo being Ringo. Devil in Her Heart is a fine album track, but nothing special. Not a Second Time is spooky and hummable at the same time. And the closing track Money (producer George Martin on piano) is another Lennon screamer and it's as good as Twist and Shout. Great video once again!

John plays rhythm,, George plays lead, and Paul plays bass. Their bass player had been Stuart Sutcliffe, but he left the band to live with his girlfriend and then quickly died, and Paul agreed to take bass. Actually, George did write "Don't Bother Me." It's the first song he ever wrote. You've learned and understood an impressive amount, compared to the level of Beatles and 60s ignorance I usually see on KZbin reactions.

I think on the first George song they were using maracas. Till There Was You was a cover. It came from a musical. Roll Over Beethoven means "roll over in your grave." As in Beethoven probably wouldn't like the song. Most of these songs were covers.

Love your reactions! ‘All My Loving’ rounds out my top 5 favorite Beatles’ songs! Never gets old. It was the first song audiences saw them perform on American soil, as it was the first song they performed on the Ed Sullivan Show! Btw, as for the covers, it wasn’t just that most bands did cover songs back then, it was that very few artists wrote their own songs back then. The Beatles were among the first to write and record their own music. And they were putting out 1-2 albums and 6 singles (which they didn’t include on albums) a year… many of them while touring in Beatlemania. Crazy. ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ was their first album of all original songs. 🫶🏽

I'm 90% sure that Till There Was You is my favorite Beatles song. I always use it as my example for why the Beatles' covers of songs were so amazing, and unlike any other group. Other groups that have made covers simply redid the songs, and there's nothing wrong with that. HOWEVER When the Beatles covered a song, 9 times out of 10, they reinvented it. Till there was you when it was in the music man was some slow boring song with too much vibrato and not enough passion. The Beatles rendition is an absolutely perfect song from start to finish, and I love it so much. It gives me chills. I'm so glad you like it!!! Paul's voice makes me feel safe. I could easily write a 10 page paper on this song, and being that I am a current college student, I probably will lol

I wanna be your man the Beatles gave The Rolling Stones and it was one their first hits ...The early albums are just a list of songs they had to bash out to satisfy record companies. The covers on this album are Postman, Til there was You, Beethoven, and Hold on me. The rest were written by George, John or Paul. (This album is John heavy). I wanna be your man is Ringo, and the Beatles turned around, gave this song to the Rolling Stones and it became their first hit, propelling them to the US as well.

Similar to Please Please Me, the Beatles continue to pay homage to the R&B groups of the day, being songs they played in their live sets in Hamburg and at the Cavern. Their own compositions stood out enough on these first two albums that their remaining records (except Beatles For Sale) will be primarily original material.

a few notes on a couple of these songs All My Loving is as far as I know the only Paul song that John says he wishes he wrote Paul wrote Hold me Tight and absolutely hated it Paul and John cowrote I Wanna Be Your Man for the Rolling Stones and it became their first hit single, and they later gave it to Ringo on this album

Not until the late albums are there multiple George songs. In the beginning, there are only a few songs that George sings on. So, just to help figure out who is singing. More than likely it’s John or Paul.

Don’t Bother Me was the first song George wrote. The two he sang on Please Please Me was a cover (Chains) and a Lennon-McCartney composition (Do You Want To Know A Secret).

If anybody ever says that John wasn't a good rhythm guitarist, ask them to try and play his part on All My Loving. I didn't appreciate this until I played in a band that decided to cover it - keeping up those triplets is painful and HARD.

This is an album that you love more with each listen. The original songs + Please Mr Postman and You Really Got A Hold On Me all get absorbed into your brain. And its crazy that the album can make you feel that way after hearing stuff like Pepper and Abbey Road
