Hey Jude, you can collect and dry your pine cones and use a few at a time along with your kindling to light your fire,and a few at a time can also be used on a fire if it’s burned down to much before you put a log on! You can cover that roof with a big blue poly tarp (blue in the US) if it continues to be a problem. Nail it down on the sides of the shed. It’ll save your sheds contents.

I folded thin lengths of ply under the edges of the tarp when I did this and then hammered into them - stopped the wind from ripping the tarp off the nails :)

As a lifelong Minnesota resident, your best strategy for avoiding slick spots after you shovel is to shovel immediately after the snow stops falling. The more time it has to compress on itself and collect moisture, the more the snow will turn to ice. Also, SO excited about your m`new companion! Welcome home' buddy!

You could always cover the roof with a sheet of tarpaulin and batten it down so the wind can't get under it and rip it off. That way your shed can stay dry inside until spring

I'm so glad you have a cat! When I adopted my cat, she hid out for two weeks! I'm insomniac, so she got used to seeing and hearing me at all hours of day and night. She stopped growling and her spitting became half-hearted. After two weeks, she suddenly appeared, jumped into my lap, purred like a hang-glider, and then took possession of the house. It took another month before she accepted my husband - she owns him now, body and soul.

Oh, my 87 1/2 yr old mum just adopted a 13 yr old beautiful ginger cat named Henry who was going to be put to sleep. He is the most loving and smoochy boy and purrs like mad. Mum also already has a dog so I’m sure that they’ll be great mates. I’m so pleased for you, having a pet means that you never feel alone. I even discuss what to wear with my 2 girl doggies and what our plans are for the day in the garden. They are just the best company ever and the love. (especially from a dog) is totally unconditional! ♥️ and are wonderful company

Pinecones make excellent fire starters. I’m so glad you gave a home to Sven, he should make a cozy warm lap blanket when he comes around. Also, if the snow that falls is the fluffy kind, a leaf blower works to clear a path in a pinch. And don’t forget to stretch before and after shoveling snow, it helps. 😊

You could always tarp the whole roof until spring when you are able to replace the roof, tarps are fairly inexpensive and it will save your tools and appliances from getting damaged.

I have always had cats since I was 5, (I’m 58 now) I have two cats just now 🐈 Sven looks like a cat I had years ago, I rescued her as a pregnant stray! I went to Fort William two years ago in a March and it was magical with all the snow, Scotland has always reminded me of Canada (I was raised in Canada from ages 10-15) It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world

@@jayneofspain3322yes and if you dip them into melted wax when they have dried out they light even better. Another alternative firefighter we used at guide camp was cardboard egg box filled with sawdust and melted wax. Allow to harden and then tear off one piece to light your fire. If you could cover the front of the wood store that would keep the wood drier too. What about putting a wood store near your entrance then not as far to walk in really bad weather

Congrats on your new family member! You might want to consider buying a plug-in heated cat bed for him. They are fantastic for winter months, and cheap to run too. Our cats LOVE ours for heating their weary old paws when it's cold. 'Self heating' cat beds are ok, but nothing can beat an electric cat bed. They quite inexpensive on Amazon atm. Your cat will thank you! 🥰

My cat’s heating pad is second only to my lap for his favourite spot. However sometimes I just need to shift positions to get comfortable, but as soon as I move an inch he leaps to the heating pad and I’m replaced 😂
