This is England Kerry .No such thing as a "too big " greenhouse .Find room ,because that's melons and cucumbers right there 😁 Lose an outdoor bed if you have to ,even turn it into a walk in brassica cage with netting .Two Rhubarb is more than enough ,even for wine 🍷

Goodness me Kerry, you've "virtually" lost the plot ! So much work phew.... you must be tired out, but it'll be so worth it and you have time to get everything moved up. Hello Kerry, your new plot is starting to shape up nicely. You have already moved such a lot from the old plot. The snow definitely came, and we still have some lying around now, refusing to go ( South Yorkshire). Hope it is warming up a little bit next week because I still have some tidying up to do before we move over to the festive part of this year.

Great idea potting them make sure they are protected from drowning and extreme cold as the soil in pots can freeze. Perhaps put them in the poly. Might be worth considering keeping the top and bottom of your new plot for permanent plantings and structures. Then the space in between will be the beds that will be yearly rotated. Going down then back to the start for the rotation to continue. Flowers such as marigolds, nasturtium etc can be interplanted in the beds that are being rotated to bring in pollinators and act as sacrificial plants for caterpillars etc. Having a set rotational plan saves trying to remember what went where and what should or shouldnt follow? The sequence is always the same. A permanent flower bed or two at the front of your plot would make a beautiful and welcome entrance to your plot. You can also have more flowers and especially those with perfume close to your seating area or perhaps grown up some trellis if you are wanting some privacy. Have fun and All the Best Rosanna
@dogontheplot
@dogontheplot 4 күн бұрын
I like the idea of having flowers out the front. I couldn't grow dahlias very easily on the old plot because of the flooding, so I'd like to try those on then new plot. I'm not much of a crop rotator because of tending to have a no dig polyculture, but I like the idea of having a couple of beds for permanent planting. Thank you Rosana 🤗

@ibrstellar1080
@ibrstellar1080 5 күн бұрын
@@dogontheplot What you could do is put a narrow bed between the Polytunnel and Greenhouse for runner beans as the wind protection keeps the beans more tender plus the watering could be made easier for them due to being a thirsty crop.

Gladioli - need to be kept frost free if they are just mixed then its OK to keep them together so long as they're not touching (like apples in a barrel 1 rots and it spreads)if they are names then keep them in a pair of stocking or tights and put a knot in them to segregate names or colours. The small cormlets you can save and plant them in a bed in spring and grow them on then end of the year harvest the ones that are about an inch across and plant out next year for flowers - any under an inch replant in a row and grow them on ... don't let these flower you are building up the corms. The British Gladioli website will have loads of info on it. your greenhouse dilemma ... well, you've got the polytunnel and a big greenhouse at home for a start. what are you going to use it for? I think you need to get planning on what you realistically need to grow and rough quantities. Don't grow stuff just to fill the plot up and if all you are going to do is use it as a big coldframe is it worth the effort of putting it up? Between you own greenhouse and the polytunnel you'll grow more than enough tomatoes I would have thought especially how you cram them in 🤣if you have two months left then I wouldn't transplant too much as you can harvest it off the old plot till Christmas ... don't rush into anything that you are going to have to undo later. remember ... Powerpoint is your friend☺ Nick
@dogontheplot
@dogontheplot 4 күн бұрын
Oh that's a good idea about the tights. I'll pass on your advice to Mark. All my gladioli are in the home garden and I don't bother lifting them. Haha - you and your powerpoint Nick! But yes, you're right - I don't want to rush into anything. I want to use the big greenhouse for loofas and melons and all the things I couldn't fit in the home one. The poly will definitely be tomatoes and cucumbers. I want loads more gherkins to pickle next year. Sometimes it's like you don't know me at all Nick - surely you know I'm all about doing IT ALLLLLLLLL!!!! 😂😂

The plants in the weedy garden beds, if you dug them up, washed all the soil off the roots, plant in pots and quarantine for 6 months/a year, you would then know if weeds are with them and decide to plant in a permanent position or not. I often do that with plants I am given to avoid introducing weeds I don't already have.

That greenhouse is not too big for the plot.. ALL. THE. SPACE. 😂 Such a lot done. It’s funny how quickly a thriving plot can suddenly look sparse, as soon as you remove the beds and the main structures. It looks so different! All Mark’s beds gone down too, that was a shock to see his plot so empty as well. Judging by the way the shadows were falling, I guess you’ll want your greenhouse and polytunnel (yours and Mark’s) further to the back of your plots so they don’t shade the beds behind them, especially when full of taller crops over summer. How amazing to get your first plantings in the new plot too. The one across the way from you.. is that a mammoth amount of sweetcorn? 😮
