Mate, you do a good job with your simple explanations, which we all learn from. I particularly like your persistence with stock parts, namely the Rochester, it would be so easy to do a LS conversion or drop the ride height and put some wide wheels on it. Glad you are teaching us while keeping it stock.

Great job getting the old girl back on the road. Gotta love seeing your young fella spending time with you while your working on these old bangers. You''ll be amazed at how much he really learns, not just about cars but about about being practical in his future life. I spent time with my old man at his work, at home in the shed and out and about. It's only now I realise how good that was for me. Kids absorb more than you teach them. Reckon your young bloke is set for life.

Great old car brother, I really do love the old GM's. Of course we never had Holdens here in the states but this car reminds me of my old Malibu or Impala, sure miss those cars, new cars have no soul which is why I luv the oldies. Keep up the good work my friend.

I worked in the factory when these were being made. I worked in the paint shop and probably painted your car I think it's Atlantis blue and when I worked overtime in the vehicle assembly plant I got to drive them off of the line and park them in the paddock. In the 80s I had a HJ Statesman Deville every time I had it tuned up I would go and check plug 8 witch was right up against the Aircon-heater box and was a real bugger to get out. I made a specially angled spanner to get to it and 9 out of 10 times they left the old plug in and said they couldn't get it out. She was a beauty too White with a white vinyl roof and imitation chrome spoke wheels it looked like Then Prime minister Malcom Frazer's car I even had a drunk throw a bear bottle at me once he thought I was him.

the way I do that plug is I put the plug socket over the plug from underneath the car and crack it open with a ring spanner over the plug socket, then just remove by hand - found it easy that way (pref a cold engine!) Gu.ess everyone has their own methods

Absolutely loved the WB Statesmans. Such a majestic car...and every bit as good looking as a Merc or BMW of the time. I used to drive them brand new when I was working for Thrify Rent A Car in the 80's. I remember how light it was to steer with so much assistance coming from it's power steering - yet so direct because of the tight steering ratio. Was a lot of fun in the wet!

Well mate , you know that car as a holden, while in the states it is a Chevrolet. Chevrolet engineers found that the car required a check valve on the fuel filter to prevent this very thing from happening. Remove the fuel inlet fitting from the carburetor and check to see if it has the right filter. Great video! {edit} Just from one car guy to another, a piece of 3/8 fuel line slipped over the porcelain on the plug makes it easier to start the thread proper. Also it helps to protect from breakin' if you work over a concrete floor and fumble the plug. I admit to fumbling " a couple" or so.

the only thing the WB shares with anything from the US is the turbo 350, the rochester and the badge. The engine is an Australian 308 iron lion and the entire car design is Australian only. Designed and built here.

Brings back a lot of memories. My father had a couple of Statesmans and I had a '69 Premier with the 5litre V8. Probably did 90% of the work on them myself. Kept the Premier running for over 500,000 miles before some idiot parked a Landcruiser in the back of it. Yeah you have to learn by doing. My father was a good bush mechanic and I helped him rebuild a car when i was about 10. He taught me a lot and my son is a far better mechanic than I am.

Great stuff again. You've stirred the tip jar. Rochester uses needle valve metering in jets like a 2 stroke dirt bike. Wind plugs and bolts in backwards first, feel for the clicks with your eyes closed. Sounds silly I know. Try this on your next sump plug with your eyes open. Pointer finger in centre of plug, wind it out till it clicks twice. Then go up periscope. Level expert oil changes coming your way when you get it right. Not one drop of oil on the ground. Hit up a fridge place for a 6 pack of fridge boxes while learning. 24 free leak catchers. Buy some universal plastic transmission plugs. Best tool ever, saves on tyranny fluid. Use card board templates on first time tear downs. Sketch a basic shape of the patient dots where bolts/ screws have been living. Poke them in their home, this is a great stripped bolt detector as well, dunk in petty 1st if too oily. This will reduce the OCD gift we both share. My old taught me the greese spigot bearing exit trick, but bread is no mess at all. (DO NO use on LS engine family ! ) I'm sure you have a bolt bucket, a great bolt hole chaser is a bolt with 3 cuts through the threads 120° apart. A new plug with earth strap cut off makes a great spark checker. Just don't ever drop it. Holden V8' have design flaw in the timing cover, when they corrode coolant goes cranky. It's a bitch to diagnose. Water pumps that have been sitting, the bottom of the shaft rust's like exposed valve stems. Then it's seal gets reemed over sized, you know happens then. Don't use the pump that looks like an alternater. Next you want to siphon fuel push the fuel out of the tank / jerry can with air. It takes bugger all pressure when the air volume in the vessel is small. That's how my old boy would clear or prime a diesel fuel line. I watched him do it to a Mack truck, and old fuel cap with a long shade valve sikaflexed in. 5 PSI is too much, but it won't be a problem unless there is a leak. Cause 100 square inches of fuel surface is 500 PSI of home made GERNI as he told me. How do you know Dad ? Compressed air is the most dangerous shit ever next to Acetylene. Check out MBE cylinder heads for valve / spring / inlet manifold porn. One last tip Holden V8 timing chain stretch will have big movement of crank back and forth before the rotor button moves, this check works on any chain drive. Stubborn high torque balancer bolts like a VN V6, you can place a tube over a long breaker bar (single hex socket) resting On passenger side chassis rail. Use a charged jumper box aswell, the starter motor will crack the bolt and wind it out quicker than you can say i wish I filmed it. Great work, I'm stealing your carb on screw driver trick.

Hi Peter, Brock's HDT company made around 120 odd WB "special vehicles" altogether. The series 1 sedans & utes tallied about 20 units, in series 2 WB's HDT made 100 Magnum sedans. That came about because in series 1 WB's there were just 18 special orders to HDT to make a HDT Statesman Caprice sedans, and some utes. However, Brock & mate John Harvey, GMH management and some of the large Holden dealers felt that a "standard" Magnum could be made and offered in a showroom on its own merit without it being a special order. That HDT & GM Holden could make a factory brochure with the base model being built as a modest spec deVille trimmed car. However, a car could be built to special order as a Caprice variant. I own one of the 18 WB series 1 Caprice sedans. I ordered my WB Caprice without being able to drive it as they were not yet out on the road, however when I used a Hertz runout SL/E Statesman I was a bit underwhelmed by the lack of power. My girlfriend's stepdad in the early '70's had a 308ci V8 HQ de Ville and it had plenty of punch, the 1980 SL/E Statesman not so much, so I figured the standard Caprice that I'd ordered would be similarly under endowed too & I needed to do something about it as it would be disappointing to own a gutless underpowered car as I really liked the look of it, as side on profile is almost a direct copy of the Swiss Monteverdi four door sedan of 1970, the 375/4. As I went to school with a Swiss girl in Mosman in Sydney and her family had two Monteverdi 375/4's, an earlier and a later one with the 2 slightly different interiors , one car was creamy white with red leather seats , and the other was silver with red leather seats The profile is uncannily the same, the Statesman's roof is slightly longer by the length of the small trailing window after the C pillar and the final foot of the front engine bonnet droops, or curves more so on the Swiss car and that goes to a more basic front grill mesh and exposed small round headlights. Re the interior, earlier Monteverdi 375/4 cabin was virtually copied by Holden as the Caprice and the interior seat design of the later Monteverdi 375/4's has been nearly exactly copied to be that of the WB deVille. This is clearly where GM designer of the WB Leo Pruneau got his inspiration from as it has been almost replicated by Holden. Re the name Magnum, interestingly the Monteverdi's use giant Chrysler V8's the most powerful version of the 440 ci "wedge head" is called the 440 Magnum, is that coincidence or what? The one I still own is my second one as when my 1980 model was 22 months old it was stolen, so when it was not recovered after the cops got the 2 guys that took it, I ordered the second one which I still own 41 years later. Sadly the series 1 versions didn't even have a name or any badges, they were just expensive special builds, so the two clowns that stole it just thought they had nicked a standard Caprice for the smash repair parts trade, when the cops quizzed them about it, the thieves said that they couldn't get as much cash as usual "as it had been modified"--- idiots , retards , had no idea what they had stolen. So that was one out of 18 gone forever at 22 months. So, what's different, special air cleaner and cold air intakes, 300+ kilowatt engine, tuned dual 3" stainless steel exhaust system get this with FIVE yep Five mufflers under the boot dual pipes go into one giant muffler and two pipes come out of it the car makes almost NO sound , thicker more massive front & rear sway bars, upgraded coil springs just slightly shorter at front than standard, taller at rear than standard with heavy duty Koni gas shocks, upgraded suspension rubbers all around (actually a super hard synthetic so they last forever) cambering front steering so in ultrahard cornering the outer tyre doesn't look like is buckling under the car and going to come off the wheel rim (eg steer right , the left wheel) so it keeps the tread flat on the ground and let me tell you it makes a massive difference. When I bought the second one, I bought a standard Caprice for my wife/partner Georgina as well, I had to remember when I was driving hers that I could not hammer into corners with the same outcome as when driving my own one. Plus in all 3 of the Caprices that I bought new I ordered the car with the Cadillac sourced rear wheel ABS braking system, originally introduced on the HJ Caprice of 1974 and in the big deluxe 1974 new car brochure there was a 6 page spread in the middle outlining how that system works, same in the HX Caprice brochure, after that it was just a line entry in options list on the on the HZ Caprice & the weird body shell run-out SL/E Statesman's of late 1979 & really early 1980. When the WB's came out there is an early brochure that depicts an optional FRONT BENCH SEAT for both Caprice & deVille plus a column automatic gear lever, in that same brochure it lists the ABS option later on in the series 2 WB brochures as there is a separate Caprice & deVille one, there is a way shorter list of options and among other things ABS is not on the list. Let me say that this is one of the MOST IMPRESSIVE options of GMH in the 1970's & '80's as it stops right quick on wet or dry roads like a 2023 car. In the H series Statesman's, they had rear drum brakes and GMH used the rear drum set up from the 1972 to 1976 big rear wheel drive Caddy's. However, Cadillac brought out in 1976 a new little, smaller Caddy, the Seville, and the first 4 model years 76,77,78,79 were all rear wheel drive with rear disc brakes and an almost identical size to our WB Statesman's, so the Seville's ABS system was the donor for the ABS WB's back axle and its heavier duty than a standard Aussie WB one as well. Anyhow the Caprices from 1974 to 1985 were packed with Caddy parts bin items anyway. Being, air-conditioning system, power door locks & switches, red & white door ajar lights, roof dome light, power window lift motors & power window switches, big outside door mirrors and toggle controls, the entire cruise control system, in series 1's the Bose sound system in Caprices is out of the Seville too ! But in series 2's GMH fitted a crummy Eurovox system which always broke down, the Bose one in my car & the power aerial work today in March 2023 as well as they did in January 1983 when I collected it new from the Holden dealer. But the best thing is Peter, that if I went to sell my HDT improved series 1 WB Caprice I would get near 3 times what I paid for it, and that's not bad for a humble Aussie car. Mines in Venetian Red metallic (near the same color as the HX LE Monaro's) and has caramel leather seats, carpet and all other trim. First one was in metallic Claret way darker & to me nicer looking on the car, but by late 1982 when I as ordering the new one the Claret color was no longer available.

Hi, a tip if you are interested. When installing a new seal, it is good practice to put a bit ot gease or oil on the seal face. This will aid in bedding the seal in and will prevent it binding on the shaft. Done this for years, and found the seals last longer...

Back in the day I drove one of these in New Zealand as a Limo/Taxi...It was an awesome car to drive and benefited greatly from the Radial Tuned Suspension that was designed by Peter Hannanberger from GM Germany...Some people even referred to them as a Holden Cadillac...Great to see you putting in the time and effort to resurrect it...And the little tips that you give are great...If I could bring this car to Vietnam where I live now, I would buy it from you, I am sure the person who gets it will be a happy chappie...Awesome video...PS. To remove the steering wheel hit the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock alternately, starting slow and build up speed and pressure until the wheel is jarred free of the spline never hit the shafts with a hammer. Not only can you damage the tread but you can shear the rivets that allow the column to claps in an accident.
@backshed5295
@backshed5295 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Craig , you clearly skipped a lot of the video as the prevention of thread damage was addressed. With no cross section in that steering wheel hitting behind the outer rim does nothing accept flex. Upward pressure from your knees and gentle tap is the way IVE done it for years and not broke 1 yet Craig ,maybe one day I suppose but until then 👍 Thanks for watching again Craig Grundy 🍺🍺🍺👍
