My Toyota Hilux is far from a new vehicle; it has lived a life as an Overlanding vehicle at Bushlore for 80,000km before I took it over. So its definitely in my best interest to keep it well maintained and running beautifully for my trips ahead! This is where Terrain Tamer come in, they are one of the biggest suppliers of high quality spares for Toyota's and other manufacturers, and their quality is built tough to survive and thrive in offroad conditions! So today we would be dong a service on the vehicle, using one of their service kits; as well as install a Flashlube 30 Micron Pre diesel filter, and a Pro flow Flashlube Catch Can. For a 4x4 another essential upgrade for the longevity of your vehicle is a set of Diff and Transmission Breathers; to protect your critical components from Water ingress when crossing streams. All of this was a very educational experience and I must say the team at Revhouse, was incredible with their knowledge and expertise in helping me out and if you were looking for someone to help you service your 4x4, consider getting in touch with Adrian at Revhouse.

I feel the focus of most overlanding channels is always the big wheels and fancy equipment, but this is probably the most important thing you can do to your truck if you dont want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere. Doesn't air from the intake go into the burn chamber? Meaning that dust that gets in, doesn't get mixed with your oil but rather your diesel that gets burnt. It probably sticks around in the burn chamber and clogs up other stuff like the DPF (if you still have one)
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
So this is obviously the air that re enters the turbo system; after combustion. When you see the amount of oil gasses that make it through and coat all the air hoses and turbo, it’s quite scary; that’s all going to end up on your intercooler. A lot of the gasses get reused to try and burn off additional oil etc; but it will leave deposits through out and that can become hard carbon deposits over time with heating and cooling. The you know I’m no mechanical engineer but this what i understood after speaking to Marinus 👍🏻

@RoamOverlanding

Oil and diesel filters should be changed every 5-10k km’s and then air filters is 10k-30k km’s depending on how much dirt roads you’re driving. The best thing to do is get in touch with someone like Marinus at Terrain Tamer; he will be able to advise best for you, head to a place like Revhouse and they can always do a once over on your vehicle and check all your oils and everything for you and replace what’s needed 👍🏻

You will just need to check with your dealership if they would or wouldnt honour your warranty after installing these. Typically Toyota is pretty good about these things, as long as you dont change your vehicles software with a remap etc, but go to your service manager and ask. My vehicle is obviously out of warranty so it doesnt matter at this point.

Good video Adrian! DEFINATELY throw a cap over the bleedvalve of that catch-can drain! I`d also get that bellyplate touched up! Developing some corrosion this early is abit hmmmm :-( As for the diff breathers, I`d be very interested to know why they Tee`d together the Main & Transferbox breathers! They are separated for a given reason bo Toyota! Furthermore how are thes vent-lines "terminated" in the engine bay? U flew over these topics fairly rapidly :-) No harm in somemore indepth mechanical insight for us here! Anyways -> Great call with the mods, keep to see where this all goes ;-) ATB
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
A cap for the bleed valve is a good suggestion for sure. We had 2 very long days of filming; ina cramped environment it’s not the easiest thing to show every single little step of the way. In some cases it’s physically impossible. I said the same think about the breather; but it’s the actual mechanism of the breather itself is different on the new ones; they don’t require pressure to open and close; they are constantly open and have a filter in place instead (if they were teed by Toyota they would require half the pressure to open and close etc.) I wore sandals because o have a foot injury and wasn’t allowed to wear my boots yet; also I was filming and other mechanics were working 👍🏻 keep to have these upgrades for sure. Have been busy all week with some DIY stuff, so see you next week back in my sandals in a workshop 😂

Catch can is always a must. Egr is the worst thing on modern vehicles. Glad you finally got the 2nd fuel filter. Injectors can easily be a r30k job. (r4500 per injector) What campinh trailer are you looking at buying? If you havent got a towing license aka EB yet. Go for the EC1. That way you can also drive a big 4x4 offroad truck like a iveco or pinzgauser instead of just normal bakkies/suv. If you go through the hasle of the eb i always recommend ec1 instead. Towing in SA ks limited to the tare of the vehicle. I think your hilux is 1900kg tare so you can tow a 1900 gvm camper. Which makes more sense to go ec1 because you can drive and tow big things.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Keanu! The camper I’m towing is only 540kg dry and Max GVM of 750; so won’t be doing a new license but I agree with you on the ec1 license if you are going through the effort!

So a clogged filter lets dust through? Interesting theory but not true! Many filtrations tests was done at SABS back in the day and then a clogged filter did not let things through. It hampers flow yes....
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
So the dust actually gets past the filter when driving on corrugated roads. It’s not the clogged filter that causes it; but the design of the air box. You could see that for yourself when you look at the mass airflow sensor. It’s a common problem on the Toyota lander cruiser 200 series even. The air box actually allows dust into the engine... horrible for such an expensive vehicle. You will even see Aussies do full air box replacements

Those flashlube catch cans are far too small for the hilux engines, they just dont have the capacity or flow for that size engine. Very prone to leaking seals from overpressurisation of the crank case. That and if they fill up, which doesnt take long due to their small size, they can block up easily, and their pressure relief valve leaves a lot to be desired. Better off changing to a provent 200 catch can. Also, if its already done 80,000ks there will be a fair amount of carbon build up in the intake already, so its pretty pointless to put a catch can on unless you clean the intake and the intercooler first.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
An independent test done by the Curtin University in Perth. You will see that the Flashlube Catch can can take flow rates up to 230L/min. A 200 series Land Cruiser will have a flow rate of 70 - 120l/min. You can read this article by Unsealed as well: www.unsealed4x4.com.au/the-great-oil-catch-can-comparison/ So I think it will be more than adequate for the hilux bud!

@@RoamOverlanding and who paid for that "independent test" the results are a bit biased. Lol. I've had at least 10 vehicles fitted with flashlube cans come into my shop that had issues with oil leaks and drivablity issues, eg limp modes and maf codes, remove the flashlube can and put on a bigger can that flows well and problems solved. But good luck anyway.
