@@J0risNL well, I ended up giving the Outlander back (with much opposition from Mitsubishi) as I found out it is not advised to use it with an extension cord which, in my situation, was the only way I could plug in. (The warranty would void if there ever should be a problem with the charging which they neglected to tell me when I bought the car) I eventually won my battle and they bought it back and I returned to a trusted Prius sooo now have my 2020. A MUCH better fit and vehicle, imo, just don't have quite the space as the larger Outlander. But that's ok by me as I'm one person only using the car.

I had a Volvo diesel hybrid and I’ve tried using these techniques but it seemed to behave very differently. The big difference is it didn’t have a proper glide function; the motor would initiate a minimum regen when the throttle was released and the intensity would increase through the brake peddle. The only times it wouldn’t regenerate when coasting would be if the engine was on or if it was in “pure” mode and travelling over 45mph so the rolling resistance was certainly very different to this car. Another difference I’ve just noticed rewatching this video is the charge function in the Volvo would charge the battery regardless of throttle position and it would charge the battery to only 48%. It put a lot of load on the engine, dropping my fuel economy all the way to 25mpg while I averaged 54mpg without it. The battery also seemed to lose an unusual amount of battery power even when stationary. I once lost 10% battery charge just going through a McDonald’s drive-thru which just didn’t seem right. Anyway, I know I couldn’t optimise it’s performance cuz I couldn’t monitor the battery health to the degree you can and the faults it has, I’m not willing to put the money into it right now. I must ask though, when your car is gliding with no regen, what would be powering the car’s auxiliary systems? Would it be the main battery or would there be another source?

I got an outlander but what is the best general B setting for my wife? I don't want her to start changing around stuff on the go. But I think B3 is the best mode? Reason is it provides some charging which maybe equal to the miles you save while coasting in B0, acts like an engine brake which can make you slow down quicker in an emergency situation and B3 is not that difficult to feather the pedal to make it coast on a faster road
@chrisburgess69642 ай бұрын
Just bought the Ford Escape one. The 2024 version dropped the charge function. The modes are sport hybrid eco Save for later I forget them all now but in hybrid mode what happens when you put the car in just neutral over just letting off the gas pedal? I am taking a drive into the mountains. Some very steep hills I know going downhill on my car I traded in the 2013 Elantra. That car to go 600kms I would fill up in Kamloops best 28liters mostly 33 liters in gas. Coasting would be pressing the in clutch. Getting to experiment soon I guess. My thought would be to pulse and glide. I found with my old care keeping it in neutral would stop the gears from clicking in thus slowing the car and getting less resistance. In Hybrid mode I am thinking that neutral shuts off the gas completely. Some of the hills are 20kms or more.

Good job. I already love this SUV! But the 40 km battery is disappointing! I think most of people wants to drive the PHEV cars all the day electrically & gasoline only for emergencies! They should have shrinked gasoline engine components for the batteries capacity. It'll be on my list until they increase batteries capacity. & I hope they enhance the range even more with the upcoming sold state batteries!

Problem is, you carry this heavy engine, transmission, tank, cooler, exhaust, ... with you all the time. Makes the car really inefficient. Also, you still need to do maintenance on the vehicle even you have not used the engine much.

The car will ultimately be used by the wife for trips into town for work and back 22 km round trip, and maybe a few kms after work. Anyho, last 5 days averaging 42-44km per full charge, flat roads town driving. So far, hardly used petrol and charging it up at the end of the day after tea for the next day, or a couple hours during the day for a top up when i used it. Is this healthly for the battery? Should we use only electric when we can? How often should we charge it a day considering? Your advise is much welcome. regards john

Hi Andy, I came across to your video after 2 years of your posting, but thanks for sharing! If you still own a PHEV, can you please tell me if someone has ever replaced the battery in this car? I am thinking to buy a used 12.2015 (year 2016) car with 140k driven, imported from Netherlands to Finland. I am a bit concerned about the battery life of this car as people say that it degrades and battery capacity drops. I also read online that IF PHEV has a battery with less than 26Ah capacity, it would be replaced by Mitsubishi dealers when the car has less than 160k km and less than 8 years. Is that true? I will try and find out from them what the capacity of the batterys amp hours is when I pick it up tonight. Andy, about the reset on PHEV, one man says this, is that correct? Read about lithium batteries how they work in automotive applications if you want to understand the issue you have created. By resetting the BMU you have basically eliminated the bottom buffer of the battery which means that you have increased its DoD. Just by doing this every time now when you discharge the battery below that artificial bottom buffer (which you do not have any more) you will be accelerating the degradation of the battery. You also risk experiencing issues such as car suddenly stopping while driving with EV system error message. You have not fixed anything with BMU reset. By such reset you just borrowed for a short term some longer EV range driving in exchange for more rapid battery degradation in the future and reduced overall lifetime of the battery. There is really no free lunch here. It is your battery, so it is up to you what you want to do with it, but that reset was not a smart thing to do and as I wrote before, nothing to be proud of.
@unpluggedEV3 жыл бұрын
No, that's not what the reset does. We have tested the DOD and all other parameters in every detail here on the channel. It is purely software related, nothing else. It will not harm the battery.

I am a new owner of a 2018 PHEV model and the dealer rep told me to charge all the way through, I.e. with a charger plugged in all the way through to 100% and all the way through when pressing the charge button. I tried charging all the way through with charge button mode and the charge stopped about 90%. The rep told me to do full charged in order to protect the battery from deteriorating.
@unpluggedEV5 жыл бұрын
What the rep tells you... he's got no idea about battery management. The charge stops at 90%, OK. I can imagine that this is very wasteful in fuel consumption. The energy the battery takes is fairly small at this SOC so probably not worth charging above 80%.
@BWT5995 жыл бұрын
@@unpluggedEV to add more context, sometimes I want to just gain 5 to 10 km in EV after depleting my first full battery. So gaining 5 to 10 km via Gas charge is what the rep says is bad. I need these extra bumps in EV to idle in EV while my kids nap in congested urban settings during winter and summer months in Canada. I have also found though that even if I'm at zero for EV there is enough of a reserve to idle in EV state for maybe 20 to 30 minutes more which is really helpful.

During wintertime highest gas consumption was 7,3 l/ 100 km driving 80-100 kmh for 150 km, minus degrees, full car, starting with empty battery. Usually my daily trips vary between 25-300 km and gas consumption has been 0-6 l/100 km respectively when starting with full battery. Hi, i have been watching many of your informative vids since buying my phwv. My only comment in this video is you recommend using the charge mode instead of save mode as it saves a litre in comparison. But what about battery degradation? If you charge, recharge 3x during the trip and save a litre, have you not just taken 3 cycles from you battery instead? Would the latter cost not be more? Also, in save mode, would you not benefit from regenerative braking thus perhaps giving you lots of charge towards the end?
@unpluggedEV5 жыл бұрын
That's not quite how it works. The DoD (depth of discharge) is what counts. A full cycle would be a 100% DoD (from 100% to 0%). In Charge mode we charge the battery up maybe 5-10% only, say from 60% - 70%. The DoD would be only 10% in this case, so 1/10 of a cycle. In Save mode the car does it automatically and charges around 3%, turns off the engine and uses these 3% of electric energy. The DoD is only 3% but far more frequent then with the Charge mode example. I found as the engine stays on for longer it operates in a more efficient way and uses less fuel therefore.
