Love this design, it's got pretty much all the bits that I want in a starship, but small enough to build it out of Lego. I'd reduce the enlisted crew to eight (from 12) and add a bunk to each cabin - so each crewmember at least gets their own bed. I enjoyed your video, although I'd love to see the images you're talking about take up more of the screen.
@Shadow52207 жыл бұрын
On the bunk issue, in WW2 submarines often ran in shifts crew sharing bunks. Day shift would work while night shift sleeps and vice versa. I'm over simplifying here but you get the idea. Space was on a premium so they had to use every bit efficiently.
@Questron717 жыл бұрын
And at 25 m for the main deck they might have more space than most oft he WW II classes of submarine that only featured a single deck inside a 40-60 m cigar shaped hull... "Typ VII" one of the most often built german designs for example had a volume inside the pressure body of 45.5 m length and 4.7 m diameter... That would be like a circle of 13-16 m diameter with a bit over 1 deck in size... crew? at least 42 people!

Of course it is a small vessel... "SCOUT" ship! Remember, the Universe is HUGE! What better way to explore, than with small, fast ships. Think Lewis & Clark type missions. Personally. I love this design

The Sagittarius also appears in the series of novels "Star Trek: Seekers." I thought I was remembering it wrong when I thought there were twelve crew members, but after double checking on memory beta, there are 14 crew members and they do sleep two to three in one room with bunks. It also has auxiliary vehicles for land and water. I'm so glad you made a video about this tough little ship.

I like this little ship. It is one of the few Trek designs that doesn't look crazy sitting on the ground. I would love a model of one around 1:100 scale. With the measuring grid below the picture the saucer to Impulse Engine outlets is 25 m and the back part including the nacelles is roughly 20 m to that... with less than three decks of height it should be roughly the interior volume of two trailer homes or something like six-eight shipping containers (12 m * 3 m * 3 m). Not very luxuriously, but manageable for a crew of about 14.. The ship has not lifts... only ladders (like in TOS the Jefferies Tubes would sometimes have)

true but I still think it is dumb... first of all with a crew of ONLY 14 your captain is at best a very Junior LTC most likely a Full LT . is it really necessary to have an official XO position rather than just have it be the next senior officer. with that being said it is DUMB to have two cabins that only are used by a single occupant nd requiring the rest of the crew split their bunks three ways... personally I would have ALL six cabins have triple bunks with the at least one bunk in each cabin stowed into a wall or Roof or floor slot for emergency evacuation, medical missions, and troop transport. I would also find a way to use the sick bay, conference room and maybe some little area up in the upper deck converted to sleeping arrangements. quite frankly it ridiculous to extend full captain and XO privileges to such a junior officer at the expense of the comfort of the rest of the crew.

Defo like this ship. They should put this in to STO or maybe in one of the new series that they are doing but slightly upgraded to suite the era. Let's hope that one of the producers takes a look and likes the idea. As for the room space for crew they could have pull down bunk beds put in there for more space for the crew or to help add a few more crew for long range scouting. One of my favourite ships so well done to the designer!!! Well impressed and thanks for sharing.

I think the necelle-caps make sense if you posit that they're pulling in H from a wider angle. 9.00 m is a tad closer to 29.5 or 30 ft. and 44.0 m would be 144 ft.

I have commanded this ship (in an RP setting) . 3 decks, 14 crew, including Captain and XO. Could be configured on the fly for scientific and compbative scoult missions. Fits very comfortably in a Constitution Class Shuttle Bay. Highly manuverable, with a top speed of Warp Factor 7.
@marketingmajor81263 жыл бұрын
Length: 45 meters. Width: 22.5 meters. Height: 9 meters. Crew Complement: 14. The Sagittarius has a top cruising speed of roughly Warp 9.4 (TNG scale). She has a single, multipurpose probe/torpedo tube, but she usually carries only about four photon torpedoes at any given time. She has twin phaser nodes, both mounted on the dorsal side of her saucer (which makes the ship a bit more vulnerable on its ventral side. The Archer-class ships are actually newer than the Constitution-class ships and can also outrun and outmaneuver Constitution-class ships (in part because of their superior power-to-mass ratio), but the Archer-class ships are not made to last long in firefights. They are designed as high-speed outriders, and their loadouts are specialized for scouting operations and long-range reconnaissance.
@OpenMawProductions3 жыл бұрын
Commander Cocking needs to go on a submarine or an old sailing ship. Rooms are usually tiny on those ships and they're actually huge vessels. Two of my uncles served on submarines during the cold war in the 50s and 60s. They both told me you had to be a special kind of person to live and work on a submarine for long periods. THey saw people lose their shit being trapped inside for too long. Also why does everything have to be an era thing? Like the self illumination. I think it just makes more sense that we simply didn't see it in TOS, but it was always there. Just like the RCS thrusters and the phaser banks. When it comes to continuity I think Occam's Rrazor fits best.

As an Star Trek engineer I would build in little 3 open antigrav circle platforms as lifts. Just for one person, just step on and it goes to next deck In a emergency with no main power, ladders fould out of the wall, so you can get to next deck.
@vishnu798 жыл бұрын
With regard to the "bunking" issue, only the Captain and (maybe) XO would have a single compartment/bed, the Medical and Engineering Officer (likely very junior officers at that) would share a compartment with a bunk, and the other crew would also share. It is also very likely that the enlisted crew uses what the Navy calls "hot-bunking" where you would sleep in "your" bunk while offshift (assuming a 12 on/12 off shift cycle) while your counterpart was onshift, and he/she would sleep in "your" bunk while you were onshift.

14 man crew and six cabins.... Here is how it would work First of all your Captain is likely only going to be an officer of O-3 rank at the most or a Full Lieutenant so it's not really necessary for him to have an exclusively private room (actually I would have replaced the conference room with a ready room with a pull out couch, any meeting requiring more than four people could just be a PA announcement or informally in the hallway. But let's get back)..... Your XO then would likely be an O-2 Lt with two other officers being ensigns (maybe one of them a chief) Those would be bunked in the two forward cabins that would have two bunks. Your aft cabins would all have three bunks with each bunk geared so that unused bunks can be stowed closest to the ceiling and floor and the remaining bunks equally spaced in the remaining area. These cabins would be for crew with one room reserves for the most senior two crewman as a sort of "goat locker"
@MrSheckstr8 жыл бұрын
This would give you 16 beds (17 if you convert the conference room in a captains cabin) for a 14 man crew. Given that most likely this ship would be attached to a base or station anytime it isn't at full operational capacity the night shift could be as few as 1-3 people. While it looks good on paper to simply have a 3 or 4 watch rotation an efficient division of labor would have a portion of the crew assigned to mid watch ( say in a 3 watch crew your shift change is on the 8s then one station in three is actually relieved at the 8s+4, with 4 watch rotation you would have shifts on the 6s with 1:3 stations relieve at the 6s+3)

My comment is not about the ship from the video. It's actually about what he said about the towers in the background of one of the pictures that the ship is on the ground. He said they look like the towers from The Men In Black movie. I guess they sort of do. But all I wanted to say was that those towers in the MIB movie are actually real structures that were built for the New York City Worlds Fair and are not far away from CitiField where the NY Mets play. I just got a chuckle out of that and thought I'd pass it along. Great video as always.

It says scout so it's not designed for long missions. Just pop out into space quickly for a look around and head back home. Crew would be small. It could be nested on the top of a saucer or between the nacelles of a standard design ship I guess. or even fitted in the lower cargo bay area (the bit they never show) where the hull scoops out - or that scoop could be extended and one fitted in a special extension for it. something like this would be great slotted into the sphere of a Olympic class or the Deadalus Class too. It reminds me a bit of what a Obereth Class would be like without the Pontoon.

It's the size of a two story house (without attic?), I wounder if you could knock the crew numbers down by making sure the Crew where also fully qualified Mission Specialists. minimum of four people per watch (Command, Helm, Opps, Engineer) perhaps with a dedicated Medical Officer (also the Bio Sciences Officer), you could skeleton it down to eight if you extended the watches out to twelve hours.and eliminated a dedicated MO. or even down to 4-6 if used as a Patrol Cutter (6hr patrol range) or if you where taxi flighting it through safe space for 3-5 days transit time.
@glenmcinnes48248 жыл бұрын
Actually you could park the thing on a vacant 32 perch (apx 25m frontage) house block, diagonally, if the Neighbors don't mind a touch of overhang, but that's only the sourer section, without giving up Cargo space for mobile labs you can only do Astro-Sciences, perhaps basic Bio & Medical or run Physics simulations on the computers, perhaps some basic Materials Sciences in Engineering. the rest of the mission profile would be Humanities. this is clearly an Advance ship for something larger.

One of my favorite designs in the Federation fleet. The small size ensures that there are not a whole lot of crew members to deal with. And because it is small, it has a tiny profile ; becoming much harder to hit than the larger ships. With the Warp capabilities I dare say it can hold its own in a fight, with ship a good bit larger. As a Scout, I see it being quite fast for its day; perhaps able to warp in, either strike, grab intel, or enemy technology, and warp out before the enemy can react. Of course it won't always work that way, but with the right captain and crew, it could fly rings around the bigger ships. It is a ship that has only enough room to handle what it needs. Incidentally, to all my trekkie friends that work in 3D art applications, this ship is available for several applications, such as Poser, DAZ Studio, Lightwave, 3DS Max, etc. Check out Star Trek Artists Unite at DeviantArt, and you can see a lot of great Star Trek artwork, as well as find links to 3D art products, all of which you may download for free. I recommend getting into doing art in the Star Trek universe.

I liked it as a 'split level' deck plan. I'm not surprised about the ladders, but some sort of "Lost in Space" elevator surely could have been put in, and would have made moving of cargo easier, I should think? Surely the ship would have made a good exterior for the "Lost in Space" ship! This is similar to how the interior of that iconic ship with such a large interior space discrepancy! While I have said I support larger ships, that is generally meant as colonizers or other people or material movers. Star Fleet and the Star Trek universe is oft based on smaller ships. The hero ships of TOS and TNG we've seen are to be the giants of Star Fleet of their respective eras. The few civilian craft of Star Trek, at least of the TOS era are often presented as glorified shuttles in size, very similar to this, or even smaller. Also, while clearly a very small ship, if this ship was seen before "Star Wars" came out, I don't think that the emphasis of 'It's SUCH a SMALL ship would there.Almost all Star Fleet ships are between this ship and the Constitution in size. Many congregating at the median between the two, and some being closer to the Archer than the Median, I would suspect.Cool that the ship lands, as it is small enough to be easily believable. It does make me wonder how ships like shuttles and such control their descent and final landing without obvious thrusters. With artificial gravity, I suppose counter force might be generated within a ship's hull for landings?
