My headcanon is the Shivans just decided to all suicide when they blew up the Capella star. Probably due to boredom; "Man, these other species ain't got nothin'. This isn't even fun anymore." :D Because yeah, the end of Freespace 2 had a literal Armada of the Sathanas + escorts vs. well, the charred hull of the Colossus and a handful of smaller ships that couldn't survive a near pass of a Sathanas, much less a direct fight with hundreds. The Shivans had won, but said "Nah, this isn't even worth it" and blew themselves up ;)

One of the devs gave us a little bit of info. The third game would be about the GTVA striking back, and as for Bosch, it didn't end well for him. He could communicate with the Shivans in the sense that he could say "words" they could understand, but he had no idea what those words were. He might have told them that he was delicious. It's definitely a gameplay convention, and not something to be taken seriously. Of the entire Freespace saga of games, the Orion Class Destroyer is my favorite, more beacuse it resembles a real life aircraft carrier One question that puzzles me if this one: In Freespace the Great War the GTA won by destroying the SD Lucifer, but in Freespace 2, who won? The GTVA by sealing the Capella Node or the Shivans by creating the Supernova out of the Capella Sun?

In direct combat Hecate was inferior - as its slashing beams were worth shit, but if you count in small craft, it would probably win (and on long range for sure win). This game had some epic looking ships like, Psamtik (hatshepsut), Hecate destroyers, Typhoon destoryers, Deimos, Moloch, Ravana, Sathanas, and some figheters and bombers like ursa, basilisk, Seraphim, Mara, Seraphis, Tauret, Ptah, Osiris, Bakha and few more. A theory was around for a while that the Shivan force the GTA and Vesudens faced was a scout fleet of disposable ships that the shivans would send out when they detected something. This fleet would probe the targets and if possible either wipe them out or be used to gauge the strength of the opponent. Imagine that, the first shivan was was being fought by the most high tech of human and vesuden forces while the shivans were fighting with what might have been version of hand me down equipment that was disposable.
@Victor-056Ай бұрын
@@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent Not only that, but there are moments that make us wonder if the Shivans were performing secret tests of character on humanity. One of those was "Conveniently" leaving their prototype shield systems out for the Galactic Terran Alliance to find and procure for themselves, and the fact that when the GTA managed to acquire a Dragon class fighter to infiltrate the Shivan Fleet, the vessel _ONLY_ started to "act up" in heated moments (Such as disabling the subspace drive for a brief while after Alpha One was discovered), and when it was taken to be researched by GTA researchers, the Dragon Fighter engaged a beacon that it could have activated at any point during the mission, so it could be destroyed and not be studied. I find it suspect because if it had that beacon the entire time, the Fighter could have activated it before or during the mission so the Shivans would know... But it only activated the beacon once the infiltration mission was done. The same applies to the whole story behind the Silent Threat campaign. Where did they get all that technology to build the Hades, and why was it so easy for Akin Bosch to study it himself, when he was a mere fighter pilot? (Fun fact, it was _HEAVILY_ implied that Akin Bosch is _THE_ protagonist of Silent Threat, since canonically, the sole survivor of the final mission, was the protagonist, since the Hades decimated everyone who wasn't a GTA higher up, and the higher ups wanted to keep it hush-hush, since the whole incident was _their_ fault. This is also why Akin Bosch kept telling _you,_ Alpha one, to "Question the moral of your superiors", borderline _Pleading_ you to do so. He was once a pilot himself, blindly following orders like a "Good little pawn" as Alpha 2 states in the mission where you were supposed to destroy the Iseni, only to be betrayed by his own superiors.) Adding to that, Akin Bosch was spared (Somewhat, his true fate is unknown) along with a few others of his inner circle, while a majority of those who were in the NTF due to greed or bias, were slaughtered by the Shivans. The ending of Freespace 2 also implies the Shivans just wanted to find a way back home to wherever they originated from, with the Satanas being the only ship powerful enough to induce a supernova on a sizable enough star to create the energy needed to breach dimensions.

I like to think the GTA doctrine changed after seeing how much fighter and bomber support affected the outcome of battles against the shivans in the great war, so instead of designing the new destroyer to take on enemy capitals head on, designed the destroyer to carry fighters while the new corvettes act as the anvil to the bomber's hammer. People shit-talk the colossus, but without it's armour and all-around beam coverage, the alliance would have had to brute force NTF blockades with great sacrifices, the Colossus single handedly broke NTF chokeholds and ended the rebellion. The shivans proved to be a threat on a scale the GTVA could not predict or prepare for, I doubt if the resources put into the Colossus going into more standard destroyers would have made any difference. Then again I'm not a massive lore guy, I could be wrong

Remember, Command originally wanted to send in the Bastion to duke it out with the Lucifer but they couldn't catch up in time, so the fighters and bombers were sent chasing after her in high-stakes hail mary attack.

When you play these games it quickly becomes apparent that capital ships are sitting ducks without fighter escort because an opposing force of strike craft can "defang" them by destroying all of their weapons in precision strikes (capital ships don´t have shields in Freespace, only fighters can use them). The side that achieves space superiority is the side that wins in the Freespace universe.

i think it's more of just how Colossus seems to be designed to take on multiple smaller class ships at once, she was excellent for clearing chaff from a battle allowing other vessels to move in but when faced with a vessel of similar size, her spread guns hampered her, combined with the Shivans just being more advanced by default. Colossus wasn't really meant to solo a juggernaut class ship but Cappella forced the situation. Collosus was dominating that fight until a Ravana jumped in basically on top of her followed by a Sathanas.

Magnificent work! I must admit that indeed the capitals are the pinacle of the game. Love the video you have developed (how much time you spent on it out of curiosity?) Its a pitty that there were so much more lore to be done in game (FS1/FS2 ... FS3?) for those capitals :) Looking forward for next movie. Ps. Done some chats with Chat GPT - based on the discussion, first Orion would have had to be ordered aprox 15-20 years before first encounter with Vasudans

one interesting note is how the gtva reversed the capital beam weaponry but not the capital shield tech. I wonder if that has to do with all the shield generators on the lucifer being blown up in the final mission of fs1

I'm not sure how ANY wreckage was recovered. My understanding was the jump node to Sol was collapsed to kill the Lucifer... so, how did they recover anything when they can't get to Sol? I imagine the tech used in Colossus was from other, lesser ships and that's probably why it's power generation and weapons were still sub-par to the larger Shivan tech in the second war. They were good enough if massed in large numbers, but still taxed to their very limit.

There was a theory about that I think I saw on the HLP discord or the forums that I kinda liked about that. Going off memory here but, they could totally do it, but it was so utterly cost and energy-prohibitive that they just scrapped the idea. Which would also explain why the reactors are outside on the Lucifer.

Enjoyed this. Too bad I never played freespace but I will look to see if I can get it.

Wow. This is so welcome. I'm worried older epic games might die out over time. You help keep them alive.

I loved that game so much. Specially the fact, that in the 2nd part the huge enemy flagship from part 1 was revealed to be like a regular warship and not something to special.

If you're open to suggestions about your next video, how about Operation: Grain Snatch from the first X-Wing game? I think your subscribers might enjoy learning how the Rebel Alliance dealt with Overlord Ghorin by double-crossing his double-cross. ...does that make it a quadruple cross?
