Suggestion for all your future excavations ;), put a sifter (wire mesh with small holes) over the wheelbarrow then shovel the dirt on top. That will help remove the stones and any catch anything larger than the holes.

It’s a thing here in states. In fact I have an old one in my yard that’s sinking in, I’m getting ready to dig out before I level the ground again. My house was a civil war hospital and I already find medicine bottles in the holes the dogs dig.

You found the “cap”. What you dug was the last use layer. They capped it off with flat stones. You havnt even begun to find the good stuff. How old are the walls? The entrance? They appear 1890’s or earlier. They would have made a pit deep! Lined in brick and stone, knowing it would be used for decades!

If the blokes using the outside cludgy in the past are anything like a lot of blokes they always kept money in their trouser pockets so I would expect to find some coins at least.

The treasure was the compost, indeed! I've no doubt there are many more treasures yet to be discovered at the Citadelle! We're on Eclipse watch here in the US & so far nothing unusual to see, but each day is spectacular in it's own right! Happy 14th Birthday to sweet Fleur. She still looks so young!! I imagine the life she & Benji are living with you & Rols, Suzie, has given them a new lease on life!! Blessings all & see you again soon!! 🦋🇺🇸

Also… that metal detector can guide you to their property dump. Every one had one! And that could also be fantastic. Usually house dumps were in nearby ravines, sides of creeks, or a cistern pit. No more than 30 yards from house back doors. Off near woods edge.

Yes it’s a gamble. Yes it eats up time. Look at it like a very slow fun thing to do. If you have rotten wood? Make a compost pile. Build three walls to protect it. Add all your garbage to it. Add the old outhouse poop. Fertilizer for garden.

Your azalea (white/peach) is gorgeous 😍 The lath wood you can use for kindling for starting fires in fireplace You appear to be 1 month along in spring season as of first mowing You need a sifter screen for gardening to put that compost through

Susie your garden is looking beautiful with everything coming to bloom. I have 17 azaleas in our front yard, all different colors, pink, lavender, red, purple & blood red. They all bloom at different times during the month of April and early May, so beautiful. It would look really pretty to have more azaleas next to your stone wall because you have sun & shade in that area. Kathy USA 🇺🇸

Azaleas do better with pecan shelled (acidic soil) mixed around in the soil and directly on top. Garden Center in the USA sell bags of the pecan shells and smells lovely. Plus moist soil instead of dry. I hope this helps. Mine are in indirect sun not full sun. Azalea bed should be 3 to 4 inches deep all the way across. Use those rocks and stones in the area to outline the azalea bed. Take care.😊

The better stuff will start about the five foot mark below. Typically the first five feet are 1940’s, 1930’s, 1920’s- and suddenly your into nice stuff! 1905 to much earlier every 6 inches is a span of one year or three.

That dry old Human poo is very good on the vegetable garden , Here in NZ they make fertiliser out of Human waste its dry and in pallet form . I use it in the garden and hell does the vegetables love it . Its also used on land mostly on dry stock farms .

Do you have a map of your property, an old one? It would show old buildings and gates, etc. those are not sample bottles , that’s a medicine or perfume bottle. Probably 1920-1940. You’ve only hit the top most layer, it could go up to 6 or more feet deep.
