So true Robert - we have found that the BEST INFORMATION comes from local people. As international sailors we always learn new things by listening to locals as opposed to thinking we know it all. Even when it comes to weather, tides etc. one can gain a much deeper knowledge base by engaging with locals for local knowledge. Cheers for now Brent

Wow that wind! Fantastic video as always. Great info on timing and tides. Thanks for sharing.
@CatamaranImpi6 жыл бұрын
Yes, THAT wind :) What I did not show is how that wind chased us from anchorage to anchorage :) - We were actually anchored close to folks who became friends and we would call them on VHF and say, 'Nigel - switch - we are running for the opposite shore' - we both would 'up anchors' and cross the bay only to find the wind switching again -lol - and is also why we were anchored on a windward shore for a while. Thanks Bill and always a pleasure to share Best wishes Brent

Another great film folks, informative and entertaining. Love how you always have a plan B up your sleeve, will ensure I do that with my future planning. Don’t worry Brent you’re not alone - I think we all have the tiger mum partner ensuring we stay fit and healthy lol
@CatamaranImpi6 жыл бұрын
Aye John - lol - a tiger mum partner indeed! And for sure, Ana is always on my case about staying fit, healthy and 20 :D Yes, having Plan B up ones sleeve is good practice and certainly has 'saved our bacon' on one or two occasions. If anything, it just helps one keep calm when things don't go according to plan and it can also save breaking equipment on the boat. I like always to research not only the destination, but also all other possible destinations along the route. Knowing, for example, what the sea bed conditions are, wind behavior and currents in entrances, can be a great help if for example the engine goes down or something like that. Thanks for commenting John - love the interaction with folks here Fair winds Brent

I enjoy the technical aspects of your videos Brett but I always keep in mind that you have a smidge more experience than the average bay sailor so what you may find relatively easy would be pretty daunting for a first timer. I wonder do you ever think back to when you first set of and think what was scary then and is a non event now. As always stay safe and have fun.
@CatamaranImpi6 жыл бұрын
Glen Peters - I guess after years and years of doing something we all gain knowledge along the way and confidence too. What’s quite interesting though is that one still is never too experienced to learn new things because by its very nature, dealing with the oceans in so many different regions of the world new challenges are met all the time - especially for those who dare to adventure on. You really made me sit and think here - a great comment - because it takes me back to sailing off the South African coast line for the first time in the dark of night. It’s one thing to see what’s coming for one in daylight - we can see the squalls approach and we can adjust sails in time, but in twitchy weather and building seas at night it’s a different story. Even as I write to you I am sitting in the dark of night on top of the bridge and we have a reef all around us - I feel free and a gentle breeze flows across my skin, the light of my phone is almost blinding as I type. I hear the waves as they crash about the little sandy island nearby and yet my opening statement to my brother on messenger (we are chatting about stuff at home) is ‘Hi Wade, sitting off a beautiful little island in the pitch black of night and as free as one feels it feels a bit eerie too ...’ So yes - I think back on how daunting it was to be entering into the darkness of night, weather building and no moon at all - and then with the boat crashing through the oceans and no way of seeing it and then knowing if we would hit a half sunken container or other object, loose the rig or more ... very daunting and scary at first. I guess nowadays we take it in our stride - we feel the weather and sense the sea and find it easier. Still, a worry for me is hitting an object in the dead of night ... it’s something that no matter the care we take, is out of ones control. Another more practical thing that was quite daunting at first which is second nature for us - is flying the asymmetric or spinnaker sails, days, nights and in strong winds we feel it’s a non issue for us anymore and that’s really nice. Awesome comment Glen
@glenpeters9556 жыл бұрын
Hi Brett, thanks for the informative reply and giving me a mental visual that makes just that little bit more jealous of your lifestyle. It was interesting that you mentioned your big sails no longer being an issue, another sailor I keep in touch with - Ruby Rose made a very similar comment about their parasailor not long ago, but they said that even after two years of cruising they don't feel comfortable having such a big sail up unless it's during the day on a long leg and preferably when both of them are on watch. Perhaps also the difference between sailing on a catamaran and a mono due to the different rigging. (now there's a long conversation to be had one day) Stay safe and say hello to your lovely lady for me.
@CatamaranImpi6 жыл бұрын
Aye Glen - we hope you live your dream too - soon. Actually Nic was the guy who once replied to a question by a fellow subscriber called Lin, who was asking if the Lagoon 440 is a suitable cat to cross the oceans. He said they were not - and he went further to say they are slow and only suitable for sailing in local territories, for example in the Caribbean - LOL! So I would encourage him to get his skills going on that asymmetric sail because we are waiting to cross an ocean with them :D In all seriousness though, I think the parasailor is overpriced and usually purchased by folks who don't realize that properly set up these huge sails can be doused in an instant. A Tylask T12 fitting attached to the tack can literally be punched out with a tapered punch (and with the greatest of ease) immediately removing all power from the rig, and in any strength of wind. When I last looked, I could almost purchase 3 regular asymmetric sails from Ullman in Cape Town for the price of one parasailor. So worth checking out the T12 fitting - I did a little video recently on Facebook to show how we rig the sail and douse it using the T12. Anyway - Ana thanks you for the greeting with a smile. Cheers my friend

We actually had AMAZINGLY beautiful days between too - for Ana who always wants to sail in warm weather and to tell me Tasmania was one of her highlight visits around the world, the weather had to be better than worse. We will share some of the great stop overs we did on our south bound passage, when sharing our northbound passage with our daughter Jenna. We did not want to double up on the visits, so excluded some footage to be shared as we revisit those areas with Jenna. Thanks again and much appreciated Brent

Aye Patrick - Unfortunately we have left Tasmania for New Caledonia where we are right now, however, we just got our visas approved to visit Australia again, and we are thinking to duck down there for cyclone season here, so one of our many options is to head back down to Tasmania and do a circumnavigation of it, to visit Melbourne and maybe even do some of the west coast - so we will look into that again. Thanks for sharing that because I am sure folks who who watch this and visit Tasmania will benefit from your recommendation. Thanks and fair winds Brent

Great video Brent. BTW is there traffic control for the channel passages?
@CatamaranImpi6 жыл бұрын
Thanks ! The only traffic control here is the regular channel marker system through the bay and then in the canal proper there is a person on the bridge and one needs to contact them ahead of time to schedule the opening. He would also ask for the details of your vessel to ensure one can get through there. For example, our beam on Impi is 7.7m and the channel at low tide has a point where it is 7m, so we would not fit. That's also why we needed to got through at high tide or close to it. I have heard that the operator has declined vessels going through because it would not be safe for them to do so. The way they set up the markers in this region with an entry from two directions, is to keep the markers orientated without a 'switch between' which in some systems is done by 'preferred channel markers, cardinal markers etc'. but what they do here, is to consider the inlet of the canal on the Hobart side rather as an exit. I questioned this and was told they do it because they consider Open Ocean to be at 'the open ocean end of the bay and Norfolk Bay is not considered open ocean, so the port marker to port side returning from an ocean is not considered valid on the Norfolk Bay / Hobart side of the channel. So boats entering the channel from the 'Hobart' side would keep green to port - i.e. exiting for deep water, or away from the source of stream. I thought that was quite interesting.

G'day Brent and Ana, thanks again for another great informative vid. Who let the dogs out, indeed:) Love the music on this episode Brent. Whats the weather been like in New Cal?
@CatamaranImpi6 жыл бұрын
Hi David and thanks for the compliment. I tried hard this time around to get the sound levels right. I noticed if we play the video on different devices, that the music can sometimes boom through depending on which devise we play it on, and now I understand why some folks complain at me about that, so hopefully we managed to find a middle way on this one. It's truly a lot of work and because of some of the stuff going on politically back home in South Africa and us trying to be 'on top' of all that, time is a precious commodity for us right now. So we are especially happy when we hear we managed to get it right. The weather in New Caledonia has been incredible, but the last 4 days have been raining and miserable. It's kinda like the movie we did of Tasmania here, the weather does not look great there, although we had some stunning weather in between so we hope our future videos will show that more. Unfortunately because we headed south to collect our daughter, and did some of the same stop overs on the northbound journey, we did not want to include those south bound visits in this video as they would then 'double' on the north bound trip, but we did have some STUNNING days in Tasmania too. If you check out some of our recent videos on Facebook, where i do shorter updated vids in 'real time' (well, as close as) you can see some of the amazing days we are having here. Australia just issued us with visas today to arrive back in Australia so we are fairly stoked about that - perhaps this time we will get down to Melbourne and who knows, Tasmania, West Coast Australia etc. Cheers for now Brent

My first yacht was called "Into the Gap", after the Thompson Twins Song. One night I fell asleep on the boat listening to Johnny Clegg and I had a dream that if I ever commissioned a yacht that I would name it "Impi". Some years later I ordered a new yacht and and true to the dream, I named it Impi. She served me well up here in the Channel Islands Waters. I sold her after 6 years and bought a Pogo - more sporty. The tradition is now that all my boats are named after songs that have some relevance to me or my family. Currently she is named Mahna Mahna (from the Muppets). Who knows what the next one will be called...

Nice video as usual. Scallop pie? Yeah nah. Waste of good scallops in my opinion. Just so you know. Scallops in NSW can also be a battered and fried potato fritter. How did you go fishing? I’m guessing by the short part on the video. Nobody actually gave you any hints on technique for whiting or flathead fishing. Not to worry a bit of googling will get you there. Nice to see some parts of Tassy I haven’t seen. Oh and for a guy who eats and doesn’t do much else. Looks to me you’ve dropped some weight since I first started following Impi a couple of years ago.
