I admire you for going beyond your comfort zone and making your dreams happen ! Yes it's easy to see what you are doing wrong but what's more important you are recognising those things too ! There's a lot to learn and you need time but you are doing what it takes, it's just one step at a time. Exhaustion comes from exposure to the elements, from concentration and your mind running wild trying to adapt, understand, remember what you have read and been told and from the total sensory overload, it is also because you are fighting against the movement of the boat and over correcting your balance, and possibly from not eating enough before you started, it all gets easier in time. So where were you sitting at the beginning and end of the video, looks like a B&B or something ?

Take a scissors and remove the guts of a fluffy toy animal. Wrap it around your microfone, or where the mike is, in your thing you use for filming. Action cam, whatever. Some fluffy fabric will do miracles, or spend a fortune on the professional thing. But please DO something about it, most sailing video's are BEEEEEEP quality.

Relatable, relived my first solo sail, I like the "go small, go cheap, go now" idea & book, sure this will be popular with avg joes like me, and the lack of bs, the humble attitude & down to earth'ness is much needed among sailing channels. For me personally, a sailing channel becomes uninteresting when they start featuring 100k boats. Thanks very much for sharing your stuff.

Brilliant! Just stumbled across this a year too late! Typical of me. These Contessa’s are stubborn little boats - exactly what you want. They have no desire to give way to any rough sea. Just look how it’s built - although small designed to keep you safe. All you have to do is hang on. Tip - pointless because after a year you will have figured this out - but for anyone new - getting the main up (not just the foresail) really helps for stability - even under engine. Your honesty makes this channel and your practical calm will make you a great sailor (or aircraft pilot - more or less the same thing)❤

Sailing is tiring for sure, especially when beating in confused seas like you were there. It still takes us three tries to pick up a morning ball, and that's with two people on deck! And your instincts are good. Putting up the minimum sail to get the job done is the safest and puts the least strain on the rigging. Congrats on a very successful first sail!
