This might as well be a HOME VIDEO!!!! In this episode we encounter thick fog as we depart for White Cove for an awesome weekend at KEELDRAGGERPALOOZA. If you don’t follow Mark and @keeldragger you should, hes got a great local KZbin channel . 🤙🏼 After the fog lifts we have some good sailing, some motor sailing and then a really fun day on the boat that ends with making beats on Aurora's MPC Live II and having a litle dance party. The next day we do some great snorkeling. You'll have to SUBSCRIBE to see PART 2 when we go to the Keeldraggerpalooza meetup and then have a great sail home.
Thanks for watching! Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you enjoy my videos.

Loved the beat session with Latin Ken and Barbie!! That fog out of Long Beach looked pretty gnarly. Glad it cleared up a bit.

I remember going to Catalina from Long Beach and I felt like we were playing a game of frogger. Ships were coming from port and starboard. I was shocked by how fast the ships came on us, this was on a clear day. Great family day on the water and beautiful family at that, thanks for bringing us along for the ride. The onion thing is new, if it works it's better than Dramamine. Wonderful video Andy.

You showed one quick shot up the mast and the light fixture on the front of the mast above the spreaders wasn't visible, but if the steaming/deck light combo is snagging the main halyard, there's an easy fix. Tie a light line from shroud to shroud, at that level, perpendicular to the mast, from one side to the other. If you can, wrap it around the fixture once as well instead of it just resting on the front face of the mast. Tension the two ends on the shrouds just to where they're about to deflect the shroud from a straight line. That keeps the main halyard aft of the string so it can't whoopdedoo around your bow light. Jonah is exactly the kind of crew you want because he saw something wasn't right immediately. The way he and Aurora took to the water shows exactly how to kick it at Catalina. I am mentioning this because people from elsewhere might not realize how they actually Could and Would swim through a kelp forest- in the wild- yes, there's sharks everywhere these days- in water that's not particularly warm--- instead of being intimidated by it all. That's Living. You also seem to have a natural feel for what works bc when you were motorsailing, you realized that a very flat jib will go faster than one that's not strapped in. If you're motorsailing and it's windy, keep an eye on the water temp gauge bc the intake thru hull can suck air if you heel too much. Back in the day sailors were either in the Harken Camp, or the Seaway Camp. If you were bitchin', there's no question you were Harken. If you were a logo racer, again, Harken. If you were an Inlander, and maybe Ploka-ed, of course you were a Harken. But if you perhaps had a sailboat And a Triumph, If you were West Coast, if you launched your Alpha Cat (or Malibu Outrigger) out through the surf, You were more of a "Seaway" type. Why? Bc Seaway blocks had Roller bearings and Harkens didn't. The roller blocks were almost Flintstone compared to the highly refined Torlon Ball Bearing Harken jewelry. Except for one thing. The roller ("needle") bearing Seaway blocks didn't fail. Ever. Maybe it was the sand, maybe the salt. But the Ball Bearings chunkered out while the Seaway blocks seemed unfazed by the elements. I don't remember if they were cheaper, although the OEM price Frank Butler paid had to be pretty attractive. What were Dame Ellen's first words of her first radio transmission of her Transat speed record attempt? "My Balls Have Gone Square!" Her traveller car bearings didn't make it through the first night. Oops, digression. The point is your boat is decked out in Seaway blocks. We pretty much draw the reliability line for anything stainless steel at 20 years, and your Seaway blocks could not possibly be less than twice that old. At the very least I would replace the shackles on your 3 upper mainsheet blocks with something like Ronstan RF614 shackles. But, and I am offering this respectively, it's your Genoa Sheet blocks that concern me the most. If one of those failed, especially in heavier air, it could be catastrophic. In one recent case fatal, when a turning block exploded and hit someone. If it were my boat, I would want something like Ronstan RC73235's. Except those were made for "T" Track ("American" And Euro) and you have Flat Track. So maybe those cars would be sloppy on your track. Or your track might be too bent-up for them. In that case, I would just get a couple of RC73202 Plunger Pin Cars and mate them to RF44100 blocks. It's kind of borderline in your case, but you really don't need the series 60 blocks. The Series 45 are plenty strong. And they will take jib sheet diameters up to 1/2". I don't know how thick yours are but I rig Cat 30's with 7/16" regular StaSet Not Sta Set X - Jib Sheets. You could go 3/8" Endura, but I wouldn't. Stronger yes but harder to handle. Just shackle the blocks to the car bales and wrap with lots of tape, so they stand up. Or, bungee them up to the lifelines. Or both. Are there any other Cat 30 owners out there with input? I don't know, I don't have a Cat 30. These numbers are all based on the ASSumption that your Flat Track is 1-1/4" (Ser 32[mm]) and not 1" wide (Series 25). Thanks, Andy PS: I Loved your Crew's Attitudes!

Marty! You’re back with tons of good advice once again. Thanks for the dissertation 😂 I seriously appreciate it and enjoy the input. I’m currently on my phone and the app doesn’t let me scroll to reference your comments as I type so I’ll have to come back to it for a couple notes on some of those specifics. 1) I’m not too worried about the halyard wrapping around the deck light, for now anyway, it was the first time it happened (knock on teak) but I’m definitely be keeping an eye on it and if it happens again I’ll take your advice with the “bumper line” to keep it from wrapping. My main sheet blocks are terrible. Badly in need of replacement. Imo they’re not only old and stiff but slightly too small for the 7/16 (I think) line that I have. And yes, I use Sta-Set for everything except my halyards where I use Sta-Set X. Pretty sure my Genoa blocks are in/on the same boat 😂 as my main sheet blocks. They are old and past they’re service life. I’m planning to replace them with the Garhauer blocks. I like how stout they are and I like the diameter of the radius for the bearings. They’re smooth but I’m all ears if you think the Ronstan or Harkens are better? Harken get pricey real quick. Anyway, thanks for the input, I always look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! 👊🏼

Great snorkeling footage!! What was the water temperature? Thought coastal California water was wetsuit temps, not bikini and board short temps? I think the Captain was wearing a shorty??
@sailingsole
@sailingsole 10 ай бұрын
Hey! The water was close to 70°. Not exactly sure but definitely warm enough for trunks once you get used to it. I wore a wetsuit because I don’t want to get scratched by the reef (and keep warm). It usually is wetsuit temps. The suit I was wearing has full legs but short sleeves. 🤙🏼
