Too bad I just found your podcast. I consider myself to be infatuated with Mr. Sherlock Holmes. I have read everything I can on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Sherlock Holmes. This is Fascinating.

Love Jenny Seagrove as Mary Mordtan. Nonetheless, it rings true the great friendship between Shelock Holmes and Dr John Whatson.

Ah at last! I have to admit to experiencing some Holmesian jonesing waiting for this next episode. Excellent and addictive as always, thank you very much for making these!I appreciate the efforts you put into them, it's an apt reflection of the quality and attention to detail in the original series. Cheers from Canada!

1:46:39 Agree completely, Gus. That "The Sign of Four" card always felt like a swing-and-a-miss to me. One of the things I always loved about British productions is that they didn't seem to feel the need to spell things out for the audience in painfully obvious ways, as seems to be the case with many American productions. (as if they know their audience doesn't have the I.Q. of a turnip) It felt like they dumbed it down with the card and missed a huge chance to add a layer of mystery and intrigue. If the card simply had the Sikh symbol on it, then the title "The Sign of Four" works wonderfully. But with "The Sign of Four" plus the symbol on the card, then the title needed to be "The Card that says, 'The Sign of Four' with a Sikh symbol for 'four' on it".

You mention that Lippincott's commissioned "The Sign of The Four" at the same dinner where they commissioned Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray". I enjoyed the 1976 production of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" starring Jeremy Brett as Basil Hallward.

I liked the new musical selections in this episode. Of course, Grower’s scores are always nice to hear in the background but the new direction was a refreshing change. What was the inspiration?

From time to time, we see a cart or other vehicle with "W. Massey" on it. Is this a nod to an actual company/business from the time? Or is it possibly somehow a wink to Jeremy's ex-wife, Anna Massey or her family?

...Mahometan is not "dismissive", it's simply the equivalent term of "Christian"...! Mahometan meaning follower of the Prophet Mahomet and Christian meaning follower of Christ... maybe our "modern" culture thinks to be better and less "judgemental" but is profoundly ignorant after all... and as judgemental as others after all, if not more...just saying...
@johnmangham28022 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the scores. I would give it a seven. Too slow. I remember watching the clock and waiting for it to end. Also didn’t think John Thaw was well cast at all. Disappointing.
