Yeah John hated It's Only Love, said it every time in interviews. I think he didn't like the lyrics more than the tune. He called Ticket To Ride the first heavy metal song.

@@garylee3685Lennon was very insecure about a lot of things. He hated other songs, which I love. And I hear that he hated his own voice, while I think he had one of the greatest vocals ever. So, you see, if I followed his self-doubting and insecurities I would not be listening to any of his music.

I'm a huge Beatles' fan and honestly, Ticket To Ride is one of my absolute favorites of theirs. Yes, you must see the movie Help! It's amazing and so is their first one (you should also see if you haven't). It still amazes me that John didn't like his voice and tried to disguise it when he could in production and so forth because I love his vocals and think they're very expressive. Great reactions! Yes, you missed out one of the songs - and it's a really good one too: You're Going To Lose That Girl. I hope you catch it and get it in soon!

Ringo is a terrific guy, very popular, funny and a great drummer, like a metronome. His percussion in "Ticket to ride" was so simple but innovative and perfect for the song.

@@gilbertgiles Nobody doubts Ringo's skill, taste, and good grace, but a drum pattern should not be offered as evidence that he was "innovative" if he didn't innovate it. According to John, in this case he didn't. You may not care who did, so it doesn't matter to *you;* but there are historians and scholars to whom such things do matter.

Act Naturally is probably my favorite Ringo recording. The main thing I love about the Beatle's covers is that they provide an insight into the songs and artists they thought were fun - and probably sang in the shower.

On Ticket to Ride, please listen for how much variety Ringo brings to his fills. The fills he puts in on the transition parts are fantastic but his last fill is just one big "crack", using the "flam" technique to drive home that last drum part, to set up the outtro. Ringo had so much invention and taste in the way he played.

I like all three songs, the video of the first one is part of the movie. Second song very catchy and Ringo's voice has its charm, there's still a long way to go before you get to the last album, there you will find a very beautiful song written by John and sung by Ringo 'Good Night', and my absolute favorite here 'It's only love', that raspy and emotional voice says it all, shame it's not longer.

I'm right there with you, Luke. "Ticket To Ride" was one of my favorites of theirs when it came out in 1965. Still is... "Act Naturally" was a very good fit for a Ringo vocal... and it ended up forecasting Ringo's actual route of becoming a semi-regular actor in Films beginning with "Candy" in 1868, "The Magic Christian" in 1969... and continuing right through the 1980s. He met the woman who would become his second wife (Barbara Bach) while they making the 1981 movie "Caveman". "It's Only Love" is one of my favorite John love songs. My favorite part is the ending when his voice goes way up on that extended "loving yooooooooooooooooouuuuu". it's one of those beautiful Beatles moments.

Beatles romping around in the snow is one of my top Beatle things ever. Ticket to Ride is one fantastic single, top notch. Fell in love with Ringo's drumming on this . Lennon liked to talk about his throwaway songs, which any other songwriter would love to be able to write. John and Paul could BOTH write "sweet" love songs. Just that John would throw that caustic in there a lil more, or show you the painful side of ❤

I'm with you Luke, on "Ticket To Ride" .. It's an absolute masterpiece, and would be in my top 2 or 3 favourites by The Beatles .. As for "It's Only Love", as others have pointed out, John was quite dismissive of it .. But I love it, and it's one of my favourite hidden gems .. The lyrics are nothing stunning, but melodically it's simply wonderful .. So beautiful, and the ending is just sublime.

LUKE, watch "Ticket to Ride" here again, and pay attention at the end when their heads are "sitting" on the piano (before they go down the hill on those sleds) and WATCH RINGO! you will see ANOTHER HAND appear on his right shoulder, a hand that does NOT belong to John, who is next to him. It's SO FUNNY, but a lot of people miss it, you have to see the movie a hundred or so times, like I did since the first time the movie was in the theaters in 1965. I didn't notice it either, until after I had watched the movie many many times back then. LOL You NEED TO WATCH their movie!! They were truly funny and LOVED to be goofy, which is something we fans ALWAYS LOVED about them. They never took themselves seriously and were just a joy to watch. OH NO, LUKE!! It's not about the town of RYE, the word IS "RIDE" and could be the prostitute thing too, or just a girl that keeps running off on a guy. LUKE, in the '70s Ringo actually made a video WITH BUCK OWENS ( who did the original version) performing "ACT NATURALLY" which was really cute. PAUL is doing the harmony here with Ringo.

On the US version of Rubber Soul, It's Only Love was the first song on the second side. It is so short, but so beautiful. It may be a puppy love song, but it does have that bit of darkness suggesting the fighting and his remorse ("Haven't I the right to make it up, girl"). This is a theme in any number of Lennon compositions.

"Act Naturally" is a great song! It has that clever twist that a lot of country lyrics typically have. "I'll be the biggest fool to ever hit the big time and all I have to do is act naturally". People don't actually realize it, but writing a good country song is not near as simple and easy as many think. Many people are fooled by the simplistic 3 chord musical structure of much of the older country songs so they think. awe anyone can write a country song. But you cannot get away with writing just random, abstract, nonsensical, drug-induced lyrics in country music like you are feee to do in rock music. You have to spend _a lot_ of time thinking of "hooks" and structuring a story with well written lyrics in verse-chorus form and maybe a bridge thrown in for a changeup. That takes practice!. Staff-writers in Nashville actually go into a publisher that they are employed with and lock themselves in a room either by themselves or with a co-writer and write songs every day for hours to perfect their craft down to where they can almost write a hit song on cue. It's not like rock bands where they are free to write song just whenever they get inspired or high on drugs, lol. Country music songwriting requires disipline to to learn to write a song a certain way and be able to write every day. Many famous country singers started out as writers. Alan Jackson was a Nashville staff writer for years, Willie Nelson wrote hit songs for other artists before he became a singing success.

Correct, John could be sardonic and bitter, a perfectionist not happy with his own voice so he had Geroge Martin double it all the time...he hated his own voice, therefore the song is not good? He did not understand his gift...too self critical...repeat that something isn't very good enough times and idiots start believing it.

Ringo has a great singing voice. I don’t have the compulsion to skip his tracks. They are a welcome addition to any Beatles Album. As has probably been stated John hated it’s only Love . A filler track written in minutes with no emotion behind it. It was around this time the drifting apart of Lennon and McCartney happened. John putting emphasis on emotional meaning and artistic authenticity and Paul putting emphasis on developing his growing musical ability.

"Ticket To Ride" a classic. "It's Only Love" I love this one, John's vocals are killer on this track. He absolutely despised this track, hated it. Said it was just a throw away filler track for the Lp. They had to write and record very quickly in 1965. They were very busy and and always under a lot of pressure for the next Beatles record. I think the track is lovely. To me it always showed John's tender side. Maybe that's why he hated it. Merry Christmas Peace ❤

The only reason "Ticket to Ride" is as long as it is is because they repeated the bridge, which caused them to then repeat the first verse and chorus. Repeating the bridge is something they NEVER would have done prior to John smoking weed. 😁 Also, George had the Rickenbacker 12-string since A Hard Days Night (attention bass nerds, this was the same time Paul got his Rickenbacker bass.) Re: the Help! film, yeah it's a better quality movie in terms of the cinematography although I have a feeling most film nerds would rate A Hard Days Night the better overall movie. "Act Naturally" is a bit of a goofy song but it sounds *great*. The production on George's guitar and Paul's backing harmonies are just awesome. "It's Only Love" was not on the US version of Help!, but landed on the Capitol release of Rubber Soul instead. It's probably the one time I think Capitol got it right, since that song fits in MUCH better with the folk rock of Rubber Soul, IMO.

'Ticket To Ride' - This seems to lack the 'bite' I'm used to hearing so it must be a remix. John called 'It's Only Love' a throwaway. He didn't seem to like it at all really. Any band would have been ecstatic to get one of the Beatles' so-called throwaways.
