I really really enjoyed the video. I am from Newtownards originally and used to fish the swanhole as a boy before the carp people took it over. It was very very weedy but full of very small pike. It was very difficult to catch any rudd or perch there. Probably due to clarity of water. I reckon the pike there eat each other. Also ballydugan. Never fished it but have a friend who does. The river quoile is nearby and on my twice a year trip home i tend to go there and fish for the rudd and roach. Thats where i learnt to fish 40 years ago. If you stayed in the Strangford arms my parents still live 2 mins from there. The drumlin loughs of County Down are very rich in jack pike or were when i fished them. Rarely ever any bigger fish but great craic all the same. Great video

if its weedy you need to try the floating frog especially during april/may, i fish it in the scottish highlands inwater 2-6ft deep and during april/may we get between 50-100 hits on the surface, its very hard holding onto them once they're hooked though, if i get 50 hits i would expect to land 4 or 5 even having them on for 2 or 3 minutes they still throw the hooks, one day i hooked and lost 31 doubles out of around 100 hits but did manage to land 8 that day, give the floating frog a try if you hav'nt already

On Smelt 😊well done. Nice to see a honest video, lots of anglers claim to be dead baiting and you can see a bucket of live baits. On the Fox videos you could always see a live bait net in the water, shame 👍

Fishing my home town Steve… if I’d known I’d have called out to see you… I think the days of big pike are gone at Ballydougan but it’s still a good days craic… were you fishing close to the car park at the pub or further up road…? I have often had to take a ride in as I was exhausted working two rods… but then I’m many years older than you… 😅
@FishingwithSteveIreland21 күн бұрын
Cheers Davy, We were fishing the carpark side. It was hard work in and out of the lake every couple of minutes but great craic all the same. I think next time I'll drop in the underwater camera to see if there are any big girls knocking around. There has to be one or two big hens among all those jacks.

For anyone thinking of fishing Ballydugan... you need a game license to fish it, even though there are no trout in it. They also charge £10 PER ROD, not day ticket. Also, the area shown in the video is for 'club members only'. Non-members aren't allowed to fish there. There are plenty of pike in it, but it's rare to get any doubles out of it.
@Sean___16 күн бұрын
Hi mate, can you tell me how many 100m+ trips you get out of the bait boat per session without changing to the spare battery? Im really considering getting one to put my deadbaits out into deeper water beyond casting range.
@FishingwithSteveIreland16 күн бұрын
@@Sean___ the most I would have done that distance of 100m in one session, was 32 trips. 16 out with bait and the deeper on. 16 back with deeper. I was using the 10Ah battery and it still had plenty of power left in it. I usually always remove the battery from the boat and charge to full as well when I get back home. Doing this I’ve never had an issue. The session I caught my PB on last January, I hadn’t charged the battery after my last session but still just about got the full day session out of the battery.
@Sean___15 күн бұрын
@FishingwithSteveIreland think I'll have to invest in one, maybe pick up a deeper next year as well, thanks

Hi Steve great vids again ,the second place you fished the pike were long and lean is that a sign there's not much bait fish in there .I fish a lake similar were all the pike are lean and I've been told the bait fish are disappearing .just a thought m8 .
@FishingwithSteveIreland21 күн бұрын
@@fishallseasons it’s predominantly a carp fishery so could be the lack of silvers and too many small pike could be the issue. There are lots of pike but most are under 7lb. The first lake used to be a trout fishery that is no longer stocked with trout. Not sure if there are any big girls left in there or is it that you just can’t get through with the amount of jacks.

Yeah you need a game license to fish the first lake as it was once a trout fishery. It’s about €20 for the year.
