This is the essential Twin Peaks theme. I would argue that Twin Peaks wouldn't be Twin Peaks without this piece. That's how important it is to the whole feel of the series.

I really recommend watching the interview where Badalamenti tells that story while recreating the session on his instrument. His impersonation of Lynch is priceless. Not in a haha funny way. But just wonderful to hear him recount the instructions he got that day.

CMI Fairlight for the main lead (which I believe is a combination of the Sararrr voice sample and a marimba sample), as well as guitar and percussion samples. Jupiter 8 for the strings. and I'm pretty sure the bass is either a Moog or Jupiter 8 bass patch. I believe there's also a Linn Drum as well in there for the main beat.

Nicely done. Here and there the harmonies are off, and the original playing style is more cursive. It's in the sounds, but it's in the performance, too

I love the effort you've done to in this video, but I can't help wonder why you don't go more in depth with a longer video. It would be cool to hear you talk about the classic composition techniques and how the synths help realise that, or put a new twist on it.

Great video, but one thing; The soundtrack was not made with "The cutting edge instruments of the time". Twin peaks came out in 1990 and the D50 came out in 1987, 3 years before. The DX7 came out even earlier than that. 3 years doesn't sound like much but you have to realize that at that point, there was a rapid change of technology from subtractive synths, to wavetable. The D50 was cutting edge in 87 because of it's sampled attack sounds, but just one year later in 88 Korg came out with the M1 which was SOLELY based on samples. Roland made the D50 a hybrid because sample memory was so expensive at the time, but just one year later the M1 was blowing the D50 out of the water and by the 90's you had true hybrid instruments like the Yamaha SY99, that were superior to the D50 and even the M1 by that point.
@HotStrange6 жыл бұрын
Subparanon if I’m not mistaken the M1 is also the best selling synth of all time. Even beating the MiniMoog, Arp Odyssey, and DX7.

Nice piece, but you got the synths, the sounds and even some of the notes wrong. The actual synths used were a Yamaha DX-7 and TX-7 for electric piano and a Prophet T-8, Roland MKS-70 and Roland D-550 for the strings. The chorus used is a big part of the string sound, you can get very close using a Juno 6/60/106 with chorus setting 1 and some reverb. There isn't a piano melody in the dark part of the song, just synth strings so your whole presentation is kinda wrong. Nit picky? Yes, but this IS Twin Peaks...
@mrduckbutt7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I'm not sure what's going on in this video. The one about the main theme isn't all that accurate either. BTW - From asking him directly, Kinny Landrum's recollection is that the MKS-70 is the predominant synth you hear in this theme (although it sure does sound pretty darn close to 'Arco Strings' on the D-550).
@electricmagazine16 жыл бұрын
The instruments you mentioned are correct but there is piano in the dark part of the song, it'sway back in the mix, listen carefully. Not an actual piano, it's a Rhodes.
@MadelnMachines6 жыл бұрын
Where did you find that out? I was wondering about the strings in particular because they're so fuzzy and warm with a really wide chorus. I'd love know which chorus was used and which part of the sound was with which synth.
@DestroyER826 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Main instruments were Rhodes and MKS-70 (rack version of JX-10), but you can also recreate it on JX-8P (its 6 voice version of the same thing, with same sounds and same analog chorus).

Mellotronster I agree that season 1 is the best season but season 2 had some amazing episodes. James’s character arc at the mansion sucked some life out of it. The new season is fantastic, IMO. Almost on par with season 1.
