So great to see my home state (Connecticut) through someone else's eyes. I think a lot of people here take the quaintness for granted. Stonington, Mystic, Essex, short drive to Newport, Yale, etc. Even my town of Norwich (town hall is just down the hill from me), glad you had a nice visit.

Always been curious about the East Coast of the USA. Fascinating to see it from a sailor’s viewpoint. And more glorious film of sailing!

Hugh, indeed. We were quite surprised how very few foreign flagged yachts cruise the east coast. It’s a wonderful place to sail and explore. And cheap if you are prepared to anchor all the time. (Cos docking is outrageously expensive in USA)

I've really been enjoying your music free videos. I much prefer to hear the wave action against the boat. Thank you for all of this "at sea" footage. I spent 4 years in the Navy, about 18 of those months at sea. I learned to love the sea.

Matthew, it really was a wonderful cruising ground around there. We could have stayed there for many seasons. But oh-hum, too many other places to see. Keep that dream and it will happen. Good luck.

To be honest we have to avoid docks here in East coast USA. We find them very expensive at $150-200 per night when a mooring ball is around $30 and anchoring free! Plus, with just 2 of us we dont really like all the work (and risk) of docking. Therefore our preference is always No1: anchor .... drop the hook and settle in less than 2-3 mins; No2: mooring ball ... also little effort and only about 5 minutes No3 Docking, which always causes the boat to be rubbing up against something .... even if its only our fenders and takes us about 1/2 hour at least. Not that we aren't competent at tight space maneuvering .... its just the hassle factor and cost. And with the dinghy on electric davits, dropping it and getting ashore is pretty easy. And Oana just loves (NOT!) getting splashed in the dinghy when going ashore all dressed up!!! ( this is the down side). That said, Stonington was the only place on all the East Coast that we had swell rolling the boat. In the Western Mediterranean its rare to find anywhere that does not have swell or surge. Horrible.

Yes, one can indeed get envious of cats when they are all stable at anchor. But I wouldnt miss the thrill of sailing hard on a monohull. I chartered a cat a few times .... great for kids and for not spilling your drinks, but didnt feel like sailing somehow.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, that sure was a peaceful anchorage on the lee side of Fisher Island (at the SW end). And yes, from the drone we could see what we could hear from the boat: the Atlantic waves rolling in on the other coast.

Thank you for sharing, do you get seasick some times? Thank you.
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
I used to get sea sick but its rare these days I think due to the concentration and full engagement with the sailing as skipper. But Oana is not so lucky, she feels the motion pretty badly sometimes, especially on a beam reach in a big sea. Although she gets nauseous, actual vomiting has only happened a few times because she is very disciplined to take take Cinnarizine pills, which do help. But, poor her, she does suffer in this regard.

When Unfurling the mainsail does Glen always have to assist at the boom? Does the electric/hydraulic furler not do it in its own? Curious about that.
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
Very good question, and the answer is yes, always, for just the first few feet. After that the wind gets into the sail and helps pull it out of the mast. Then Oana "follows it out" with the hydraulic outhaul. I'm sure this is not the intended technique by Selden, but we find that if/when we try to pull the initial sail out of the mast using the hydraulic outhaul, it either pulls too much and jammed the sail or pulls too little and the sail unrolls in the mast without actually exiting. Both lead to jams. So, we have found our method to be failsafe .... so far! We are acutely aware that a major jamming of the sail half-in-half-out of the mast would cause a big problem, so we are as gentle as possible with it. ANY sign of it not coming out or going back properly we immediately stop and investigate what to do. Those hydrualics dont take any prisioners ... ! They can put tremendous forces on the sail and gear if you are not careful. The biggest risk with our setup are the vertical battens and the sail cloth. The battens make a wonderful sail shape but they add quite a bit of bulk to be furled into the mast along with the sail. Added to that, our sail cloth is a very strong laminate design, making it thick and heavy. So, we must ensure that each batten enters into the mast exactly parallel to the mast - its all a matter of boom height (angel to the mast) when furling in. Get it wrong and the battens themselves will be spiraling around inside the mast. That leads to a major jam. A lighter weight cloth and no battens would be ideal for in-mast furling. But then you sacrifice performance (battens give sail shape and larger roach) and longgevity of the sail life (laminate sails are pretty indestructible vs one layer Dacron).

Wow. Thanks so much for such detail and completeness. I’m eyeing the HR 57 (near future) and am consuming as much as I can about their systems. I know things fail, especially electric and hydraulic things. But I’m really hoping I can find a boat (and equipment) allowing me a long waterline and as much “solo sailing” capability as possible. Thanks again and please keep the vids coming. They are awesome (as you know)!
@SailCloudyBay6 жыл бұрын
We are here in Annapolis at the HR USA dealer (Free State Yachts) and we were looking at the 57 brouchure. Very nice yacht, but also still very similar to our 54 in many ways, but with a more modern looks and rig. Bow locker looks great, but you have lost the cockpit locker which is always safe to get to and dry. The hull windows are nice from inside, but again, to the detriment of locker space. And they have squashed everything to get an even bigger saloon, including reducing the engine room size. The full walk-in engine room on our boat was a huge selling feature for me. But, the 57 now looks more like a modern boat but still built to the HR high standard ... I'd buy one if I had 4 x the money that Cloudy Bay is worth!
@perkygrubb6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I wonder if the engine room was going to take a hit. It’s one of the reasons I am looking at HR too. I’m still considering a lightly owned HR in the same waterlength too. But darn if they’re difficult to come by in the US! I’m going to need the 120v/60Hz 🙄
