We understand the weather in Bermuda Nov-April is pretty variable like this. As it gets "clipped" by the huge Atlantic weather systems that roll of the US coast heading to bombard Europe ... But, it was actually a refreshing change after the chilly Chesapeake and also a good climatization for Antigua. We did love the island. One of the nicest we have visited ... certainly in the top 2.

I was sailing my 1982 Norseman 447 Shakti from St John back to Cape Cod for the summer. Cleared into Bermuda. on by birthday 6/15. Visited the Church @ 5:30 in this video . Walking around a lady seemed to appear from nowhere. She put her harm next to mine, said you and I are the same color. I explained that I was a charter boat captain, and spent much of my time in the sun. She told me a story. When she was a teenager riding the train to school, she fell in love with the conductor. She told me that I was his twin. After a while when I processed what had transpired I looked for her and she was now where to be found. True story, around 2010.

Hi, it’s a large yacht, perhaps you could move to the fore cabin to escape the lapping noise, failing that perhaps rum could be your friend. The morning might not be so bright though.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
Peter, if it’s really bad I do escape to the mid cabin but Oana always sticks it out with ear plugs in the aft. True... after a good rum evening any lapping does seem to disappear as soon as ones head hits the pillow! We do giggle about the first night on the boat, in Gibraltar. We get into bed and it’s perfectly quiet except for a very occasional lap on the Stern. Oana says “what’s THAT?” And I explain to her it’s wavelets lapping on the hull and that she will get used to it. “No I won’t!” She replied. And she never did :). Ear plug are her friend.

I find the extremely leaky Hallberg Rassy unacceptable. Should never happen, especially on a boat that costs the amount of money as this one. The entire V Bert being soaked is just ridiculous, and all the other on deck hatches being leaky is something I could never put up with. I have owned 3 blue water boats, currently an Amel 55 and never have I seen any leaking from any where. Further telling is the back fixed port leaking that is over the aft state room. When I saw that Hallberg Rassy only used a strip of some kind of tape instead of a proper sealer/adhesive product. Scares me to think about how the rest of the boat is constructed. However I think the world of you two. Great videos, and you are great sailors!
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
Jamie, it was entirely my fault that we had ( a small amount ) of water into the v-cabin. I left the vent open! Its true that Amel are very water tight yachts and renowned for it as well as their sea-keeping qualities. Its no wonder you see so many Amels doing Ocean cruising.

Bermuda is such a beautiful destination......The people, culture, cleanliness, etc make it a great place. Very expensive and the weather is iffy/hit or miss November-April, but one of my favorites...And it is your British territory......lol...Safe trip to next destination....PS...Have you guys ever done a video on who you guys are? What you did before cruising? How long you intend to do this for? Life after cruising, etc?
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
No we haven't done a video like that. Maybe we should now that we have a small following. Our original intention for the videos was to let family see what we are up to and how life is on a cruising yacht. And for our own memories. But it has got a bit bigger than that now. We both previously worked for the same company, Schlumberger, an International Oilfield service company that had us living all over the world. Our last place was Dubai for 4 years. I took early retirement there in 2016 and Oana took forced retirement (forced by me!) and we bought Cloudy Bay. I have owned several smaller yachts in my time but sailing experience for Oana was racing our J22 in Dubai. We miss racing. This cruise will take as long as it takes for us to get around the world. Maybe 5-6 years. Oana would prefer it quicker! but also doesnt want to miss anything. She likes the travel aspect, I like the sailing. Life after cruising? we settle and buy a property somewhere in the world that we like the most. Right now that would be mainland Greece. And of course, down-size on the boat.

@@SailCloudyBay Thanks for the context. No better way to explore potential retirement neighborhoods than this. Now I get the ease at which you approach systems engineering and maintenance. I opted out of the Schlumberger lifestyle 34 years ago (had a "better" local offer as a mech/materials engineer) so I understand how you got here. Good for you. Carry on. Keep focus on informing family and representing cruising life, the recipe works for me as an observer. All the best. The Squid.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
Very interesting to hear that. I wonder where you were with Schlumberger. All those years ago "Wireline" was THE company. It all got horribly big in the last decade. I loved the early days but should have got out earlier before I was hooked by the pension. I ended up doing 31 years! Great life, they really looked after me. But very glad to be retired ... and relatively early.

Not abandoned, now a showpiece. Commonplace for something like that. By next race it would be obsolete and no longer competetive, also to the fact that the stresses those boats go through, their integrity is compromised. In short they couldn't survive another race season, the price for speed. Far better a showpiece than the alternative. Destruction.

@SailCloudyBay

In the forecabin, we always have the cowl reversed. But with the dinghy in front of it, waves tend to splosh off the dinghy and down the cowl. We know this, so I normally close that vent when we have the dinghy on the foredeck .... but I forgot this time! In the aft locker, there are rubber seals all around the hatch that work just great .... for rain. But motoring the last mile into Bermuda, against big seas we got a wave that flooded all the decks, including the aft deck (unusual). So I'll have to get Oana to lock me inside the starboard locker and see where the seal is not sealing. I'll wait till she is in a good mood, or I might never be let out!

Is the name spelled “Betelgeuse”? This may be the same boat I saw in Bermuda in the spring, If it is, I made the mistake of pronouncing the name the same way you did when talking to the crew. 😂 one of them got very upset and corrected me stating “it’s pronounced bettlegise”. It’s a star in the constellation Orion. I politely apologized and moved on. I suspect by their quick and defensive response that the mispronunciation happens a lot.

When mooring alongside a concrete quay would you consider using a hull cloth? It protects the hull from scuffs, dirt and scratches created by the fenders. When there is a lot of movement even soft fenders will roll and transfer grit to the contact with the hull. You can buy ready made hull cloths or make your own to suit your boat. When you have gone to the trouble of getting your topsides polished it seems worthwhile protecting them. www.plastimo.com/en/jupes-de-coque-9283.html
