OMG. Every time one of your episodes shows the HR54 under serious sailing conditions, you top it off with this. Supurb views, sounds and ambiance. Just the sounds of the boat going through the water put me in vicarious heaven. I enjoyed the view from the bow pulpit looking up the forestay at the spinnaker. The design of that sail is new to me. Loved the first mate's narration. I now have to be patient for a subsequent follow up.

I was wondering if the 'lifting gap' would help if you have a small squall run up fast (since it could let air out), yet I guess not, as it is more for lifting than shedding load. When was the Atlantic that calm? Fair winds! Great sail!

drx1 xym yes it’s one of the features of “the gap”. Under normal sailing it feeds the wing with lifts the sail bit in gusty conditions it also very effectively de-powers the sail

The way, the lines for the parasail are conducted, seems quite unusual. I don't know any spi-system, were 2 lines are attached to the bowsprit. Will have to study that. Very nice relaxing Zen-Moments in your video.

Hi Bob, we sold our asymetric spinnaker within weeks of getting the Parasailor. It flys from 90 to 180 deg off wind no problem, and sets like a dream. So yes, much much prefer the parasailor. Up to 15knt wind we use parasailor from 120-180 degree. anything more than that our 140% genoa (either normal or poled out) works well.

Zeke, No, no, no and NO! We are not a reality show, god forbid! At least, we try our best not to look like one anyway. We like to keep our privacy of how we live onboard but rather focus only on pure sailing, exploring where we land and how we up-keep our boat. And we certainly are not into showing T&A (Oana's that is ... no one would be interested in mine!) just to get our viewings up. As for humor and smiles, well, that's just us. Gidday guys, another great presentation, thank you. I'd never seen a parasailor flown before but it makes sense and seems quite versatile. Am I right in assuming it can be flown without the pole using just the 'bowsprit braces' to stabilize it? Does Oana have a sister? When you are sorting kite sheets I'd love to have an admiral that says 'it's OK, you have 4 days to get it flying'. I'm more used to hearing 'get the kite up now, you have 400 metres before we jibe it at the mark' (no pressure). Do you set your autopilot to course or wind angle when you fly the kite. Fair winds and stay safe.

Glen have you considered using a shorter Whisker Pole (attached to the mast and set perpendicular to yacht CL) to push the spinnaker sheet outboard to create a better angle when reaching with spinnaker. This is a racing technique maybe not suited for short handed cruising 👍👍

Andrew Logan yes used those on racing yachts but - a) too much hassle on a cruising yacht and b) you don’t really need one with the Parasailor because off the wind all the force is on the tackline, not the guy.

Thanks Kent. Glad you liked the natural soundtrack. We only hve 1 pole on the boat, so no, never thought about double poling it. Frankly, its very stable on one pole. And in the range 90-160, its stable without any pole.

Oana, Glen - this video is quite brilliant and so helpful. What we get to see of your sail set-ups is wonderful, just at the point when my wife and I are choosing our foresails. On top of this footage, your comments (and instrument shots) are perfectly informative, providing ideal contextual data on weather and boat performance. Thanks for this - and for knowing how to hold a camera steady! :-) We are having a rolling conversation, tossing up which single or combination of foresails to order, to augment the standard short-genoa (or solent) and inner-foresail on our 45 footer. So let me ask - in light of your experience with this Parasailor, are there conditions where you would prefer or need to use a symmetrical or asymmetrical spinnaker, or perhaps a gennaker? Are those sails now effectively redundant for Cloudy Bay? At times we do find there is some remaining attraction to the idea of a roller-furling gennaker, or the simplicity of outside gybing with an asymmetrical spinnaker. However, when we see the wonderful performance you get with your Parasailor, ... well, we feel encouraged to jump over the simpler sails and go straight to the high end, of performance, but perhaps also of complexity. Rick, we had an asymmetric and really didnt like it. We could not go down wind with it and frankly the genoa performed just as well in the wind angle range of the asymmetric. What we needed for a light wind sail for that annoying wind angle between 120-180.

@@SailCloudyBay Thanks for these thoughts Glen. Yep, the Parasailor solution is looking pretty hard to beat, for what I hope will be light to medium wind duties from reaching to running. Our foremost foresail is 102% at best; called a solent. It won't have the tight upwind pull in light wind that your 140% genoa has, so we are also looking at a Code 0, to cover that territory. And just as you've described, because it comes on a nice and convenient detachable furler, it's stupidly expensive - the same as a Parasailor! Eek! Don't these sailmakers realise us yachties have run out of money? :-|

Zeke, Practice, practice, practice. Since the age of 14 for me, but only recently for Oana. That said, its not rocket science and easy to learn. There are many sites where you can offer your services as crew, where you get to learn by doing. Or you can take some instruction with a sailing school. Some just buy a boat and get out on the water, but be ware, the sea can be very unforgiving to the innocent.

Hi Glen, Oana. I'm studying this intently again, planning to order soon. I'm weighing up sizes/lengths. Do you know the leech length and area of your Parasailor, along with your I-Spi measurement (from the limit of raising your sock's shackle, vertically down to what would be the foredeck equivalent level at the base of the mast)? It looks like your Parasailor, rigged in its sock, would be close to matching that length on your HR 54. I'm learning that some folk order bigger ones than this; others order smaller ones, sometimes after starting with bigger ones. Do you have any thoughts on the fit, feel and behaviour of yours, on your boat? I'm leaning towards a size that matches the fit you seem to have, or one size larger (50cm longer and 6% more area). I'm told I should be able to 'sock'' this without dunking it in the drink - important! I'd value your thoughts. Thanks. Rick.

Rick, as you may remember, Oana found this parasailor on the second hand market. The size that ISTEC recommended for the HR54 rig was 232m2. The one we purchased is 228m2, so slightly smaller than the recommended. The "correct" one for our HR54 would apparently have been 0.5m longer. But we are quite happy with this size (its already huge!), because when we douse it, the snuffler ends up perfectly 1/2m off the deck and the "tails" of the clews dont quite touch the water if we accidentally let them fly. As for measurements, I’m afraid I don’t have any. Hope that helps.

Dale, thanks for another great comment. Yes, that was quite a shot inside the spinnaker eh? The dome on top of the radar post is a small Inmarsat antenna. We’ve never used it because the cheapest package is $400 per month for just 40mb. Yes .... 40meg! If you want anything like useable internet via satellite it’s $thousands per month. These big sat domes you see on top of super yachts are probably minimum $8000 per month for the line rental. And even then it’s only a few Gb allowance!

Hi Niklas. In theory it is possible to fly the parasailor without a pole. But dead downwind it does tend to roll from one side to another even in calm seas. Adding the pole makes it VERY stable. THe beauty of the Parasailor is that you can launch it with no pole then casually rasie the pole on the lazy guy then tension up on the guy. Much easier than a normal spinnaker where the pole has to be set ready right when you first set it.

What's the advantage of a para sail over a normal spinnaker?

The wing in a Parasail or Parasailor (by ISTEC) is taken from the design of a parasail - those wing-shaped parachute things that dudes glide across the skies with. Depending on the model, wind goes over the fabric wing of the Parasail, or over and through the twin wing surfaces of a Parasailor (which Glen and Oana have), and causes lift. This imparts a lifting and opening force to the body of the sail, which ensures it stays fuller and more open than a normal spinnaker would during lulls in the wind. Claims are also made about the effects of the force vectors on the sail's lines, i.e. the effects of vertical lift on the wing reduces the extent to which the top of the mast is pulled down, meaning the bow tends not to be buried as much as with a traditional spinnaker, whilst also making the role of the autopilot easier. Users assert these claims are valid. The opening in the sail also allows gusts of wind to escape through the sail, thereby providing a pressure relief valve, so to speak. I am looking at two more modern variants of this concept (though effectively the same) from Oxley sails, a competitor of Parasailor, started in the last couple of years by a parasailing design consultant who worked for ISTEC on the original designs. Users talk about leaving them up for a week at a time during Atlantic or Pacific crossings, though they sometimes have trouble getting them down once the wind gets up - a hazard Glen and Oana wisely avoided. :-)

I'm afraid we are definitely not animal lover types. plus cats are dogs really aren't adapted for life on a boat, no matter what their owners think. When we see other taking their dogs to the beach 2-3 times a days then coming back with hair covered in sand and salt water .... no thank you!

How do you manage watches on long passages?

John Hancock 3 hours on 3 off at night from early evening till about 9am. We are both awake during the day .... but I usually get a nap in there somewhere. Oana struggles to sleep during the day, so I try to make sure She gets enough sleep in the dark hours.
