An interior walkthrough and technical tour of s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) with teak interior, center line berth in aft cabin, linear galley, armchairs in the saloon, super-cabin and forward v-cabin in the bow.
Welcome aboard Cloudy Bay, our floating home and our transport which is taking us around the world.
Till now we have focused our sailing vlog on the experience of sailing to our destinations, and our discoveries and adventures once we arrive. By popular request we have now shot a tour inside Cloudy Bay so you can all see her layout, her cozy yet stylish traditional cabins, and some of the inner workings of what makes her tick like a Swiss clock … most of the time!
We shot both a detailed day tour and also a night tour to capture the different ambiances inside the cabins. We also poked the camera into most of the important lockers, mechanical and electrical areas and describe the instrumentation at the nav-station. December 2018

Impeccable yacht from bow to stern, port to starboard! Been waiting for this tour since you were in the Grenadines when I first found your channel and then searched back to see all episodes. It is a pleasure to watch you handle this gorgeous boat so easily, but mainly I am impressed with your obsessive cleaning and maintenance of all systems aboard that keep you mobile and enjoying the life you're living. This HR, the Cap'n and First Mate are, for me, the prototypical image of what cruising life is like just below the level of hiring the driving out to someone else, you're an inspiration, man. Wow, that was some compliment. Thanks so much Mr.Johnny wheels! I think our heads just enlarged 2-fold!! You did hit the spot on crewed boats. We would never want paid crew on our boat (even if we could afford it!) but we do like the way those superyachts shine and sparkle. And, when we have bumped into the various crews on our travels, like us they spend a huge amount of time and effort to keep all the systems running and looking ship shape. They cannot afford not to really, its a competitive market. For us, it not the pay (Oana pays me nothing ... but love!) we get as much pleasure in keeping Cloudy ship shape as it is to sail her and explore our various destinations. And there is nothing as rewarding as doing it yourself.

You know I love the conspiracy theory and secrecy, I spent an hour yesterday trying to figure out QAnon (JFK Jr. - noooo) and then another hour trying to determine what was in that envelope that they gave Laura Bush (and four other VIPs) at the funeral of George HW Bush (beware, both of them are deep dark rabbit holes). Laura Bush looked petrified and Jeb looked shocked (W just hung his head in disbelief). I will let you know if they EVER let me out.

The way you shot this interior tour is just amazing...really shows just how well thought out the HR's are.especially this HR 54. Looks so spacious, elegant, classic style but still modern and timeless. Cant help but notice how you hardly find a hard edge or sharp corner anywhere below on this HR. Amount of space and storage is just incredible. Believe they are still one of the few sailing yacht builders who incorporate a walk in engine room. Just awesome!

Michael Douglas sadly even HR are moving away from big engine room space, moving to over “modern” designs where the space is in steady used to make the cabins feel bigger. Same with the beam storeage cupboards we have .... these have all disappeared with the new designs that now have hull windows.

@@SailCloudyBay That sucks in my humble "non-HR owning" opinion,. Always felt that the HR engine room layout is one of their strong points along with their build quality etc/wood work, design etc ..but that engine room where u can walk in to somewhat in any weather condition, and not have to lift a hatch, remove floor boards etc. or lift up your sole of the cockpit like the Amel's, is such a trademark to the Hallberg Rassy brand. Will be interesting to see if their upcoming new HR 50 is going to be a winning design for a bluewater cruiser like their older models or if their move towards more "modern" designs while sacrificing storage space, engine room layout etc.

Yes, I imagine a trawler accommodation maybe a little more .... let’s say practical! :) I spend many years working on offshore oil rigs so I guess that would be similar but less bouncing around.

Mark We agree. HR yachts have a bit of a timeless feel to their interior. They do modernize designs, but very slowly compared to the high volume production yachts.

All I can say is WOW! Such a gorgeous yacht in every aspect. I thought it was brand new, but it obviously has been well taken care of to say the least. I am happy to see someone else is a "neat & tidy" freak as myself when it comes to taking care of your obvious passion. Everything is laid out so logically, beautifully, and functional. I like all the curves and rounded lines throughout, it really makes it flow nicely to the eye. Woodcraft with chrome fittings is also gorgeous. The "snap in" carpet pieces is a great touch for not only looks but functionality. This is one of the nicest monohull pieces I've seen in my opinion. Congratulations, I'm absolutely in love with it, and I'm more of a CAT fan, LOL. Hope to see future videos of her.

The nice thing about HR is that they stick with what they know works and only change to newer style designs very slowly. Some people don't like that of course, but if you want a quality timeless design, I dont think you can beat HR. And their back up and support is also excellent. For instance we wanted new teak tops in the cockpit. Not only did they send the right size/shape they also had on record the colour index of the teak used in the build.

Thanks for the nice comment Oliver. You know, sometimes when we are roaring along in an empty Ocean I do think to myself OMG, shouldnt this be scary, just me and Oana out here in the middle of nowhere at the mercy of the elements. I think its healthy to think that way occasionally to stop complacency. In reality if you are well prepared, know the boat VERY well and plan each trip with weather and safety in mind its probably safer than driving your car on an average road. The other factor that people overlook is the consistency of sailing in true blue water areas. For instance crossing the Atlantic east to west in the trade winds is super predictable. 15-20 knots right behind you. Easy to plan for and no surprises. Then sailing in the Caribbean season, the wind is the same all the time give or take a knot. If we were Crossing the Atlantic west to east or up in higher latitudes, things get way more unpredictable. Its the unpredictable and unknown that is scary. I think our trickiest passage was Gibraltar to Lanzarote and then the first 2 days out of Lanzarote into the trades. Similarly, the recent passages USA to Bermuda and Bermuda south were also pretty tricky. The key to keeping out of the scary zone is to be patient and wait for the right weather window. One will always come, eventually. We wish you all the best to achieving your dream. Above all, do it before its too late. We have met too many people who hung on to a salary for just a bit too long, then when they were ready, health issues thwarted their dream. So sad. Do what Nike says ....

I have begun the process of getting rid of all of my worldly possessions (at least those that won't fit on a boat) and live the dream of a stress-free life on the ocean. How do you know how to repair anything and all things? How do rid the black/gray water? I think I've read that there is a mechanism for dumping while at sea as long as it's the required miles from shore but I'm not sure if it's true. Anyway, thank you for being so helpful! This boat is so beautiful I can't see enough of it. What always amazes me on all the other videos is how fast she can sail. My last boat was a Newport 27S in San Francisco Bay for 10 years until I sold it due to health issues, but before I spent 2 years during 1980 sailing up and down in the Bahamas and such in a CT-54 that, although it was beautiful like your boat, it could never even come close in speed. It was the boat of a friend of mine who let me have it for 3 years, but it was slow and was very work intensive. I don't have a sailboat now but if I were to buy one it would be either all electric or all other system but for sure push button for all :). I envy you guys, just sailing on that boat must be the most fulfilling feeling a human being can experience. Happy Sailing Always!

Glen, that is a stunning tour. Especially the last part in the evening. I was looking at the 50 and 57 and while they are nice, this has a charm and quality that seems better. Especially now that my mind is at ease with the spade rudder (after watching your rudder video) I believe this to be the best HR produced. The 46, 48 and 53 are high on the list too but this has it. Nice speed, great weight and excellent look and feel.

Oh my Nautical's!! And I thought I knew what vessel I wanted for when I start to circumnavigate the world in, (Amel Super Maramu, Oyster, some others), but your boat, very beautiful. I am afraid to find out the price. Nonetheless, another ship builder to research. Funny enough, I found this video from one of your own videos the long way... I had been wondering what boat you sail. So I checked your YT bio, Googled "Hallberg-Rassy 54" to than stubble upon your own video of your own boat. And btw, the perfect walkthrough I have ever seen of a sailboat. Just the right amount of slow pan across all areas to see the details.

I love walk-throughs especially as regards what electronics are on board. I'm almost 50 and I've been a licensed ham radio operator since I was a kid. There's been a debate for years on the need for long range HF SSB. Too many people are giving up on marine SSB and they're just going with a combo of vhf(s) and a sat phone. Thsts a mistake! Whether a licensed ham with HF on board or a Marine HFSSB, it's great to see tried and true blue water, long distance boats that have marine HF on board. Its low Gen tech but I hear loads of the long distance types say they wouldn't push away from a dock without it. I love listening to the PacSeaNet on 20meters and some of the other nets on Marine SSB. I hear as regards those finicky pactor 4 modems, they're brutal to try and use if you don't know what your doing but again, who would take a long range boat and leave without SSB?

"Can we get it messy again?" Hoot! Hoot! HaHaHa! This was THE BEST inside video I've EVER seen of a Hallberg Rassy... Loved the wide angel and slow movement, Mr Camera Man! Outstanding filming and commentary. I've watched a ton of vids and this IS THE BEST JOB. (Normal lenses, usually moving too fast, do not give you a sense of relationship - space to space, room to room. The night filming was a very nice touch as well. You likely contributed to me finding "My Boat" as well... Of all the models I've seen, somehow this interior felt the most "comfortable" and spacious without too much or too little. Thank you so much. Hope to write to you from "on the water" some day!

Thomas, no more like a Naval rating charged to keep things shop shape. Oana is the Officer :) Funny you should mention that though. When I left school I was selected to enter the Royal Navy as an engineer officer. But at the medical they kicked me out because I only really have one working eye. I never could quite understand why I needed 2 good eyes to be an engineer. In fact, for the rest of my career I actually was an engineer. Their loss. Funny how life takes you down its paths, often without control!

To this day [at 68] I still can't forgive the Navy for disqualifying me because of my only one good eye! I remember telling the examining officer that the British Royal Navy din't have any problem outsourcing work to one eyed pirates throughout their Naval history...

Thanks for the nice comment Tom. Yes the layout and engine room was a big selling feature for us. Other (unmentioned) blue water production yachts seem to have bits and pieces of various systems horribly spread in all the lockers where you also want to stow personal stuff. OK with weekend sailing but not liveaboard.
