[EP7] How To Restore Oxidised Gel Coat - Chemical Treatment, Wet Sanding, Polishing & Protection.

In this episode I trial a few known techniques and products to develop a procedure I use to restore the faded, oxidised 30 year old gel coat to achieve a perfect finish. The gel coat is ultimately wet sanded and polished/sealed with Meguiars.
My second series features the restoration of a Cruise Craft Galaxy 585 XL. The aim of this series is on high quality fibreglassing and boat repairs/restoration with a budget and DIY still in mind.

Hey mate, great videos. I'm just starting a boat restoration and your video is great help. 1 question I do have is why didn't you paint the bottom of the hull as you did the top? Did you polish the top after the final top coat

Because gel coat will always be better thank paint, it’s repairable and much tougher against scratches and knocks. The bottom side was just a bit faded, it didn’t have an excess of holes and cuts into it, and I’m not sure how I would have suspended it to paint underneath.

Looks superb. Could one just paint the sides and bottom as you did with the top of the hull using the Northane?

Having used it for two years now I would not. Any paint will chip and much easier than gelcoat. Next boat I will restore will be all done in flow coat.

Between painting the top sides and polishing the lowers…..I bet you doubled the sale value of that boat.
