In this video I perform a major freshen up to the big ''Rude power head with a touch of machine work to make it go that bit better. Some larger carburettors are also rebuilt with even bigger jets and fitted along with CC reed valves. The entire motor is then reassembled with all its newly painted parts on the boat ready to be rigged up.
This series features the total restoration of a very cheap Haines Signature 530F in need of a lot of work. It aims to educate people on how to perform good quality, but very budget orientated repairs and modifications to all things mechanical especially boat building.

These are incredibly valuable engines and best if rebuilt over many Years. As a daily driver a Yamaha or battery electric motor is better. Great video with even better comments any OceanPro is of far greater value than a Car so tens of thousands of dollars. Finding those who can collectively do a proper rebuild of these is hard but certainly finding Yamaha rebuild experts are everywhere in Florida and the Caribbean. If you have a quality Yamaha rebuild team they can definitely work on one of these beasts and now you're ready for offshore work or to sell to an enthusiast.

If you use wisco pistons and balance all the rods the engine will last and if you clean all the ports castings and open up the lower port entrance and round the entrance fuel efficiency and power will be 75 hp increase with exhaust port opening 1.67 from top of cylinder and widen it to 250 spec

Hi, please to contact You. I'm been years and years looking to find a Big Looper in My country, plenty of Mercury's. My Dream comes true!! Just recently picked up a 1997 Venom 225 (200 "real" hours) looks like a piece of Museum. I've been years reeding about looper mods, the 2.7 heads, reeds, ports, etc etc. I want to learn about de cooling mods and want to go to 225HO specs.

Great video i have also an evinrude v6 225 and I'm trying to do a less deep work on mine, since the matter is new to me I'm having some inconvenience with the job. I'd like to know if there's a way to identify the reference of my motor since i haven't been able to find an id tag on it, so i can use the BRP catalog? Any idea?

Great video! Quick question. Ive got the same motor and was wondering at 10:48 where the hose thats connected under the center of the motor under the ports goes to? I know the one thats a recirculation hose with the check valve, and the one that pulses the fuel pump, but the other one? I am trying to get my motor back together and dont want to risk ruining it. Thanks!
@cheapthrillsgarage
@cheapthrillsgarage Жыл бұрын
I think that one is the loose hose that goes up and into the little hole in your plastic intake cover up the top. I think it draws out any oil that’s ran out of the engine and pooled in the bottom manifold.

Put stainless flat washers under the four screws holding the six plates on the throttle bodies. Also the same on the six plates on the Carburettor side plates, (1986/87 two screws 1988 - 1995 four screws / 1995 - 200~ five screws) spreads the clamping load, they do loosen off and cause all sorts of idle mid range lean issues.. Later main jet plugs 1997 - 2000 (Johnson) have an extension to stop the main jet walking out. The 1987 through 1992 carburettors seem not to have this affliction. VRO is fine to use, new pump and monitor oil usage. So much bad mouth, un-educated muff on-line about these. Chap I talk with in the USA routinely runs his 250 on a 21" Bass boat at 8500 RPM during long lake runs (apparently thats fishing). Detonation kills OMC Loop V6's (98 RON Premium gasoline always fresh), cooling also plays a major part, thermostats, blow off valve and water pump. Check water pressure should be at 5000RPM at least 20 - 30 PSI from exhaust adaptor fitting, often not a lot of water around the top of the engine which causes air and steam pockets. Apparently there is much conjecture on the OMC closed deck 90 degree V6 "cooling mod". Never found a reliable source of what was supposed to be the go with this. Some form of "reverse flow" cooling. Exhaust chamber, block, then heads, then out through the exhaust adaptor. Factory specs for total ignition advance, verify TDC, at least three times and knock back total advance by two degree's to 16 degree's total advance. Cylinder five and six, their exhaust porting loop upwards is dreadful. Factory open deck engines had richer jets in the lower two cylinders as an anti detonation precaution along with lower compression. 1988 through 1993ish... Air-boxes. Big bulky unit on 185/2000225's 1986 - 1994, 62D or so main jets in carburettors. Later versions at least need a 74D + main jet with the lower restriction different air-box cover. Intermediate and idle air bleeds, start at factory, Carburettors with the adjustable air bleeds, start at six turns from seated. Conjecture on the 1986 225 big bore carburettors, good luck tuning. 185/200 Carburettors, 2 screws on the butterfly with a smaller diameter valve. 225/250 threes screws holding the butterfly. Keep cylinder head planing to a minimum. .020" on pump gasoline and hope that Wisco forged pistons are in use after run in. Higher octane fuels, nice but remember AVGAS 100/130 or 100LL is designed for a low piston speed 6" bore piston. Work through the run in extensively with the Wiseco's. Get the engine warm, run at idle in gear for at least an hour in the water, then 1/2 hr at 1500 RPM. Monitor temps and water pressure. Then do carburettor and throttle, timing adjustments at least 4500 RPM. Take it for a run but be gentle for a while. Later versions had hose connecting the lower carburettor linkage. Avoid and use the earlier. OMC were well into the red by 1999... Running hard at 6600 RPM then slowing, factory carbs are very lean in the mid range, hot pistons, hot exhaust ports, lower water pump pressure, cast OMC/BRP pistons (or Wiseco's), poor oiling, bad fuel, gummed rings, do the math there. Engine cleaner after each 10 -15 hrs of running. Consider an additional run down switch to engage the fuel primer through this period of cool down. in a warmed engine with higher compression. Then don't forget cold seizure in outboard two strokes. Do timing and take it gentle. OMC pistons are cast and can take a run in abuse better than forged Wiseco's from new. I know had plenty of issues with Crossflow hotties. 225HO and 250 porting, great, but LA Sleeve only do the factory height for a 200/225. Think its 1.8" down from block with a wider swirl. .125" wider than a 200/225 seems to trigger a memory. Don't raise the port height. Having just put together an OMC 250 "warm" engine today I can offer the above. By warm I mean Boyessen reeds (bought the Chris Carson Reeds, nice but couldnt get a seal properly on the reed cages). Cleaned all the casting muck from the intake and exhaust ports. Planed the intake manifolds for .005" less and planed the heads .020". The above is all on a closed deck block. Similar to my current 1992 open deck block. Ideally the best would be the 1986 - 1987 2.7 litre Bridgeport bored to the 3.0L piston size, adding finger ports to bores/pistons, keeping the 2.7 heads, Boyessen reeds, after market ignition (CDI Electronics digital) Google search Al Stokers Project 300. 300 prop-shaft horsepower in a 1992 Evinrude 3.0L V6 on 91 MON Gasoline. They are after all a fishing motor, they can out around, but they also can be poked with a stick, frighten Mercury's and be reliable. Warm cranking cylinder pressures 105 - 110 PSI. My two cents, from what I have built...

@@adriancrabtree787 I've rebuilt several J/E V6 closed deck loopers, and currently have a E225TXERK rebuild in progress. Basically, an identical 1994 225hp as yours, except Evinrude. I'm just waiting for the cylinder block back from machinist doing a Cyl.#3 re-sleeve. A little advice (actually a huge bit of advice). For the love of GOD, do NOT use Anaerobic Gasket Maker on the cylinder block/head gasket, nor grease on the head bolts, like he did. Get a Factory Service Manual online for $30-$40 and use the specified sealants for each application. Anaerobic sealer is only used in two places. The primary use being the mating surface of the crankcase to cylinder block. The other is on the powerhead to midsection mounting bolts. It's not intended to fill large pits and gaps. Only scratches and slight imperfections between two machined metal surfaces, where a gasket is not used. For the head bolts (or any external S.S. bolts in Aluminum, with the exception of those mentioned above) coat the threads and under the head with Permatex Aviation prior to torqueing. This prevents salt water environment infiltration and the galvanic corrosion that occurs between S.S. and Aluminum, usually resulting in a difficult (if not broken) bolt removal. If you have shallow (1/4" deep pits using "J-B Weld Marine", and resurfaced it using a homemade hand tool. That was 3 yrs ago, on my dad's 1997 200hp Johnson that is still running today. The "over-the-counter" substitutes for (expensive and sometimes hard to find) OMC Lubricants and Sealants, are as follows: ~ OMC Gel-Seal II... = Permatex Anaerobic ~ OMC Gasket Sealing Compound... = Permatex Aviation ~ OMC Adhesive M Sealant... = 3M 847 (or) Permatex Black Rubber Sealant (which is also an adhesive) ~ OMC Triple Guard Grease... = any green, waterproof marine grease ~ OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease... = same green grease as above ~ OMC Moly Lube... = any EP Moly Grease (aka: Super Lithium) ~ OMC Ultra Lock... = Red Loctite ~ OMC Nut Lock... = Blue Loctite ~ OMC Locquic Primer... = CRC Brākleen (simply a "chlorinated" brake cleaner that evaporates and causes anaerobic gel & loctite to cure better.

Hi thank you for information it’s so good ! Can you recommend modifications for a 97 carby v6 150 ? I’m in the process of modifying the bottom leg , pick ups , exhaust , it has reeds and stuffer kit drilled exhaust and VRO bypassed (no pump) will it start easier with a pump kit ? This is the current project , with another project being a 300xp v8 86 model with racing bottom leg . Can you recommend any information on this ? It has VRO REMOVED , and v6 VRO bypassed without a filter , I have ordered a kit . Thank you again for the information ℹ️ 🙏🏽💯 long live OMC !!!! 🦘 I have XP300 counter spinner and racing leg originally set up to run as twins . It’s loosely pulled apart but can be rebuilt . Options for this I’m considering , rebuilding to run as the original twin or do I try have it rebuilt as a regular spun engine and put on another boat warmed up . Apologies for all the questions
