I'm sure a lot of you thought it would never happen, but in this week's episode there is a BIG REVEAL! I also catch you up on the bank holiday weekend, a bean disaster, and we take a tour of the allotment plot as well as the home garden. We get some potting on and planting out done - and head out to the garden centre, of course!! Oh and there's another long chat about SLUGS!

20 likes! I've never had a comment with so many likes 🤣🤣 - you must have all been shouting at the screen. In my defence - the trouble with that bamboo kitchen roll is it doesn't actually breakdown because they put synthetic fibres in so that it is reusable. It's a total greenwashing scam and if I'd known I wouldn't have bought the stuff.

Slugs, my grandfather taught me to put out a pie tin near the plants, add beer. In smaller gardens I’ve used tuna tins. Slugs love it and what a way to go. He was born in 1895 and knew a thing or two about gardening.

Yes the sourdough starter works like the beer - it is the yeasty smell that is attracting them. Sourdough is such a bougie alternative 🤣

Delighted you've got the greenhouse up 😀💚 Now you definitely got space for all of the garden centre rescues! Thank you for the mention ☺️💚🌿 Hopefully, your tunnel arches are going to be more laden with greenery than mine are at the moment 🫣😂 but it is a great structure. I've never come across the miscanthus mulch, sounds quite interesting, but as you say, the slugs will be crossing regardless, when they're hungry. Dory does look fab with the fresh cut and it was funny to see her munching on the broad bean 😊💚🌿

Fab update Kerry ❤ I do love a plant sale 😀 I'm so pleased that you rescued your pongo beans. Not all mine germinated so despite your hiccup I think you'll have plenty. Loads of lovely tomato plants. We are trying tomatoes 🍅 outdoors this year too. Hope that mulch works well for you and be interesting to see how the eucalyptus smell deter the slugs and snails. Night time slug hunt is something I've been meaning to do, geez so many slugs so it's well worth it. Have a great week ❤

Hello Kerry, OMG you are exacerbating my PTSD of seed germination. I lived that nightmare last year!! I buy the cheapest paper towels for the seed sprouting now so they will fall apart very easily when wet for long periods of time. So the paper is likely to come apart rather than the delicate roots breaking. Last year I cut slits with a surgical blade to allow for some to come free. Yes a few did get planted with little scraps of paper here and there. I do appreciate how you are able to show all the various conditions you find some plants and seedlings. You never know how you showing something can help someone else by seeing how you mitigate the problem. Thinking hey I have that also so thats what I need to do. For me the biggest lesson and new plan going forward is: Rather than start 10 of these and 10 of those I will start 3 now and later 3 more and in the end 3 more. so there are fewer today and not too many to pot on at the same time and reduction of waste. Cheers to you one foot in front of the other. Cay next thyme, Steven

Yes, I think that's a good idea - also means that if one lot gets wiped out for whatever reason, there is another lot in the wings. I've been trying to do little and often this week - get some stuff sown, some stuff weeded etc. Keep it manageable (ignore the big things 🤣)

Great to see the plot and greenhouse, looking good. If I'm not too late, aluminium greenhouse best on a good level foundation which can even be a simple wooden frame of 4x2's as if even slightly uneven it will flex in the wind and self destruct. Lastly tent poles are great to use but be careful after a season as shiny coating breaks down in the sun and can give serious fibre splinters in skin (as I painfully found out) so wear gloves when using once weathered. All the best!

Another lovely vlog Kerry! Ah well we live and learn re the beans and agree with others re leaving the paper be and one with the roots. Hopefully some survive. I wonder if you leave the shoots in water they may grow more roots? You are like me with my phone light on at night checking the cut rhubarb leaves for slugs and snails! lol At least, unlike the Blair Witch film, is was just the slugs that were snotty! lol Have you seen the scary movie version? Easier said than done but try not to be too hard on yourself. Gardening, allotmenting, growing is always constantly changing and a continual learning process. The fact that the climate is also changing, means that we also need to adapt and learn ways to do things differently. One thing i learnt about biodiversity is not having too many of one species of insect bug. Yes you can cut back the bottom layer of folliage to allowed air flow in the garden but also maybe a water feature is needed to attract slug and snail eaters. We definitely need to think about that in our garden. We have a bird bath and we did have a toad for a few years before the heatwave in '22. I really want to find a spot in the garden and bury a washing up bowl and semi fill with shingle, etc to bring back the newts and toads to balance things. I had great success growing courgettes in containers but the last two years have been appalling results in our garden! As we have reshaped our garden and i have managed to reclaim more space to grow, we have also recycled our old sandpit that wasn't being played with any more into a bed. So far, touch wood, they are doing really well as a 3 sister bed and have both male and female flowers growing at the same time! Our potatoes have been switched from fabric bags to the plastic containers and i am even seeing flowers for the first time! We did ok on the potato front and the fabric bags also have potatoes as a test. Not sure if it is the climate or something we done, but our strawberries and raspberries are doing very well this year?! Not complaining but it is interesting. We definitely need to mesh them when they start to ripen. Have you noticed that with your fruits? Not sure if you are interested but thought it was cute but we have resident blue tits in our old cold water tank pipe hole! Not sure how our child feels about it as the air brick to their bedroom is just below it. I have managed to get some brief videos of the mum and dad do tag teams going in and out of the nest. I am not even mad they ignored the man made bird house! That part is all close off in the loft and it is concrete. So lovely to see the greenhouse assembled! That will surly make things easier for you when it is all setup. Looks really clean considering too. Did you hose it down? Also love how your beds have settled down! Lovely of Clare to help you out with a spare pumpkin plant if all goes well with her new setup and how well your new ones fair. I am a big fan of straw flowers and statis?, the lilac and blue flower that dries well. We just planted out poppies, calendula and lobeilia in the front garden. Also some shop bought fuchsias in slate style pots. We did have compact, ornamental oregano in them but late Aug they just went black suddenly and died?? Anyway, a long comment for a long video but you really have been a busy bee Kerry! Take care!

Agree- I have my pond and a couple of washing up bowl 'ponds' in the garden - the slugs seem to have the upperhand at the moment, even though I have lots of birds in the garden. No didn't hose down the greenhouse frame - yes, I suppose it was pretty clean looking seeing as it had been languishing behind the shed for a year! It was a long video! 🤣

I think (hope) we have fewer slugs than you. Our spring was quite dry. And we don't have borders, I've cut the grass but must strim as well. Dealing with slugs is like dealing with weeds, the more you remove the less work you end up with. For some reason I noticed small gaps around the inner rim of pots, so I pushed soil back firmly against the pots, and I noticed fewer slugs. May be either the slug population was shrinking anyway or this "buried" them in the gaps where they were hiding from daylight.🤷 Not sure myself, but any less is good.

Once upon a dew-kissed morning, atop a proud leek stood a tiny slug named Slimey. Slimey was an adventurous slug, always yearning for excitement beyond the confines of the vegetable patch. His friends-Slimy, Slinky, and Squishy-were equally curious creatures, and they often gathered around Slimey to hear his tales of distant lands. One day, as the sun bathed the leek’s green leaves in golden warmth, Slimey had an idea. He slithered down the leek’s stalk, leaving a glistening trail behind him. “Friends!” he called out, his voice echoing through the dewy morning air. “Gather 'round! I have a plan.” Slimy, Slinky, and Squishy hurried over, their antennae wiggling with anticipation. “What is it, Slimey?” Slimy asked, her eyes wide. “We shall topple this mighty leek!” Slimey declared, pointing a slimy trail towards the leek’s base. “Imagine the thrill of it-the leek crashing down, the earth shaking beneath us!” Slinky raised an eyebrow. “But why, Slimey? The leek has done us no harm.” Slimey grinned. “Because, my dear friends, we are adventurers! We seek the extraordinary, the unexpected. And what could be more unexpected than a toppling leek?” And so, with a chorus of excited sluggy giggles, they set to work. Slimy wrapped herself around the leek’s stem, Squishy pushed from below, and Slinky clung to the side, providing moral support. Slimey, being the leader, climbed to the very top, his tiny slug heart pounding with exhilaration. “Ready?” Slimey called down. “Ready!” they chorused. And with a collective heave, they pushed. The leek wobbled, its roots protesting. Slimey’s friends strained, their little bodies quivering with effort. And then, with a satisfying creak, the leek began to tilt. Down it went, leaves rustling, dirt flying. Slimey clung to the top, riding the leek like a green-and-white rollercoaster. Slimy, Slinky, and Squishy tumbled after, laughing and whooping. The ground shook as the leek crashed onto its side, sending earthworms scurrying. Slimey stood triumphant, his friends cheering around him. “We did it!” he exclaimed. “We toppled the leek!” And so, in that forgotten corner of the vegetable patch, the slug adventurers celebrated their victory. They danced on the fallen leek, their slime mixing with the soil, and vowed to explore more daring feats in the days to come. For Slimey knew that even the humblest of creatures could create magic-if they dared to dream and topple a leek or two along the way. 🌱🐌✨ Made with AI but have been thinking about these leek toppling slugs all day 😂

Oh Joe - I was so impressed by the story and then it was written by AI! You're as bad as my students 🤣🤣🤣 Haha, no I loved it - brilliant! Made me smile. (I pulled up the leeks this morning and checked - no allium leaf minor or sign of any other critters - so I really do think the slugs have been eating the stalks!)

Your only one woman Kerry, i spent 4 hours weeding yesterday, mainly the paths 🤦🏻‍♀️ so frustrating. I went to the allotment at 6.15 this am to build a bean frame and get my runner beans out 🤣

I am, and it is worth remembering! I've been doing early morning stints in the garden this week - need to make the most of the time I've got and when I have the most energy (I'm definitely a morning person).

You should have just planted the beans with the paper obviously you would need to cut the beans apart

The trouble with that bamboo kitchen roll is it doesn't actually breakdown because they put synthetic fibres in so that it is reusable. It's a total greenwashing scam and if I'd known I wouldn't have bought the stuff. Grr. The beans are recovering but I think I'll end up direct sowing more.

I’ve read you shouldn’t grow peas and onions together but don’t know if that’s true

Oh - ah yes, I've googled and you're right. doh. Although tbf the peas are suffering way more from the slugs than the onions I suspect.
