Nice podcast guys. While I would agree with you that the Driver is probably the one club to get fitted, it is probably also the one club most people can play with off the rack. Pretty easy to pick the loft, length, shaft flex to fit your game. Irons probably are the more important clubs to have properly fitted. Had a proper fitting years ago, and my irons are 1/2" shorter than standard due to my lack of height. Also though playing with slightly shorter irons, also need to open the lie angle about 1-2 degrees. When I went to buy a new set, I game them those specs and they got me the shorter irons but did not open the lie angle. Struggled quite a bit. I took them back and made them open the lie angle. They rolled their eyes a bit but did it and I started hitting them pure. I still have those irons in the bag and they are the best irons I have owned. Calloway Big Bertha and despite getting older and losing some yards on my driver have lost little on my irons.

Really enjoyed this one 👍🏻 Hopefully one you might be able to answer re. Club fitting. I want to get a new set of irons and I’m trying to decide if I should have them fitted. My concern is, if I continue to have lessons and improve, with this change my spec requirements again? If so, should I just wait before getting new irons, or will the fundamentals in terms of spec remain the same? Currently 18 h/c, with single figure target…

Interesting what you said about best club(s) to get custom fitted for. I'm just getting back to golf after 15 year lay-off and I'm thinking that I'd get more benefit from custom-fitted irons because so many new drivers come with so much adjustability (in terms of loft / lie angle etc.) that I could 'mess about' with settings on a new driver to find a setup that works, whereas a standard set of off-the-shelf irons can't normally (or at least, easily) be adjusted in any way to find a 'customised' setup. Would be interested to know your thoughts on my logic ?

I'm 6ft4in, T-Rex 38/39" wrist to floor length, and I've never hit better than I have with my first set of irons; an off the shelf set of Titleist DCI with stiff DG shafts. Got fitted several times, each one a different result. One insisted I needed at least 2 inches of extension, 2 degrees upright lie, regular steel or graphite shafts, jumbo grips and another was barely modified over standard at .5in extension, 1 degree upright lie, regular steel shafts, mid grips. Go figure. I like trying out a little bit of everything!

I know that this is a year old, but respectfully, I disagree with the driver being fitted first. I played with a TaylorMade r7 driver and TM R7 irons until 2018. I wanted to buy the new TaylorMade p-770 as they were just released and I hit the test iron. I LOVED the feel of that club. I couldn’t afford those clubs. I found a set of used Nike Vapor Pro Combos in a local shop (a steal at $550 in 2018). I bought those, and after a short time, I dropped SEVERAL strokes from my game. As a matter of fact, I was using my 5 wood off the tee more than my driver. At 225 and straight, and with the confidence of my new irons, my handicap went way down to 11. I think irons are the most important change that you can make in a bag. A 400 yard par 4 doesn’t require a driver to have a nice second shot to the green.

Hi Rick! Big fan!, I’ve dislocated my right shoulder 3x and my shoulder blade sticks out further than normal so now in my downswing because of the peculiar angle you have to have your arm in on the backswing my shoulder tries to compensate and push forward so as not to stress or over exert it, it pushed the club forward causing an out to in swing and slicing almost every club in my bag. Is there anything I can do to work on that?

The one most important club to get fitted for, if you have very limited funds, would be the driver - hands down. by far the most important club to get the right shaft, lie angle, face loft, grip size, etc. Next would be your irons including the wedges. Last club to do would be putter.

I play off an unofficial handicap of 28 but now have the opportunity to practice every morning on a range. I worry playing lower handicappers in that they’ll think I’m a bandit. I’m certainly improving and finding I can score well over 9 holes. 18 is more difficult. I really would like a formal handicap but I’m not a member of my club in Spain. Any suggestions?

Fitting is important but only if it’s done properly. I worked at a fitting store for 3 months and it didn’t take long to realize it’s a business game and they are trying to maximize profits via the fitting process. Tons of incentives for fitters to sell certain brands (callaway cough cough) etc. Wasn’t anything like I thought it would be.

I must say in the point of being a higher handicapper ( Score index 15.8) playing with a lower handicap, in my experience I have experienced the single handicap player making it quite clear to me that he did not like playing people with my handicap and only wanted to play with single figure handicapper’s but he tended to be the minority but it still annoys me but with covid our club has online comp bookings so he is kept happy

I'm surprised at the answer around the fitting. A good fitting session should mean that there may not be a need to exchange all the clubs in the bag. Maybe standard wedges should be exchanged with special wedges, or the driver really is wrong for the swing type, but fitting shouldn't equal an expectation to purchase. It may be different where I am in Germany. Often the answer is instead to spend the “club” money on some more pro lessons. The way it should be IMO.

Fitting is important for the players that have a swing. Most amateurs and weekend hackers fitting isn’t as important. If it’s free fine but if you’re paying a lot of money for a fitting and just a hacker it’s not worth it. I’ve spent so much money on that as a hacker and literally played better off my store bought no fitting clubs. Lessons are the best fitting - get your swing fit.
