Euhm.. there's ~2.0 liter diesels since the 70's in europe. Million km's w123 taxis or 700k+ 1.9tdi's still running around. Doesnt all need to be a 5.9 cummins for longevity. There's plenty of vans+trailers with a combined weight of 7000kg (15000 lbs) on the roads here and if the go bust, its usually emissions crap like egr valves that kill them or shorten their lifespan Pricewise you're right. Thats insane for a simple van.

What is 500,000 km for the USA? If I make 140,000 miles per year... a costly van just for 2 years ? Turbocharger to be replaced at about 200,000 miles.... Now they want to double that cost. This is absolutely European version of the power plant.

The moment you start comparing gas and diesel, I knew you had no clue what you were talking about. I actually agree that this engine is too weak for 11000 GVWR, but no one knows how reliable this powertrain will be over the long term. Only time will answer that question. Also, most people absolutely do not tow with these vans. They convert them to RVs or the use them for hauling cargo, but they're not towing. You are just trying to projecting your experience and opinions onto everyone.

Doing fine in my 2.0L 2023 Sprinter weighing 10k lbs at Mammoth Lakes (8kft elevation) right now. It’s happier at 55 than at 70 up a steep enough grade. But the 2020s were the same. Other than that the 2023 is an improvement in every way. AWD transmission is better than the fake 4x4. Sequential twin turbo doesn’t lag. Computer nannys (lane assist; tire size; etc) less intrusive. Time will tell but it’s a diesel and I think you will get more problems babying them than hammering them (ie DPF).

You have no idea what you are even talking about this engines. Go to UK or any European forums, those engines where introduced in Europe in 2016! 8 years ago! Everybody who has Sprinter’s there either stick to OM642 3.0 or OM651 2.1. I was laughing 😂 about fake 4x4. What a joke. None of them ever perform like a real 4x4. However it’s good to be able to control the throttle YOURSELF and not by computer, again rear differential lock solves all the problems. Do some research before making out statements like that

Our Silverado with the 2.7L 4 Cylinder Gas can tow more than 9,000 Pounds. The 3.0 Diesel Inline Six can also pull more than 9,000 pounds. Our 2022 Colorado with the 2.8L Duramax Diesel was capable of towing 7,700 Pounds. And currently the Colorado (which is Motor Trend Truck of the Year) is only available with the 4 Cylinder 2.7 Gas from the Silverado and can also tow 7,700 Pounds. Fun fact: Semi Trucks are 6 cylinders and they tow 80,000 pounds. The Turbo is what makes the difference! This Mercedes should be more than capable of towing 5.000 pounds. I bought a 2022 3.0L in Feb 2023, but had to tow it from New Jersey to Seattle. I believe 2.0 can have the same horsepower as 3.0 with dual turbo, but I still choose 2022 for 2 reasons. When generate same power, 2.0 needs rotate much faster than 3.0, which means shorter life span. Dual turbo also means much higher temperature and higher failing rate. Second, msrp of 2023 is much higher than 2022. It is about 10% higher with the same configuration of 2023 2.0 to 2022 3.0. Moreover, the destination fee was raised from $1700 to $2300.

Two turbo chargers mean that that diesel is the high output model, that has 332 lb/ftof torque. That's 7 more than the outgoing V6.However, evenr the slight bump in both horsepower and torque, I could not imagine howing 7,500 ills. The standard diesel engine with a single turbo can tow 5,000 lbs. The discontinued 3.0 V6 could tow 7,500 lbs. I kind of don't trust that this engine (the 2.0 diesel) will have a long life. Mercedes should have made any improvements to the tried and true 3.0 V6. And they could have mated the 9 speed to it. I think it was a wrong move to downsize for any reason. And the MPG are the same... so...I think this is going to bite Mercedes in the ass as these engines fail.

The old engine has more history in ratability i agree and i agree with you to keep the 3.0 and add the 9 speed transmission that would been a beast of a sprinter , but it looks like the pressure from EPA a government agency forcing manufactures to make small engine so the diesel engine and gasoline will fail in the near future and we all have to be force to go with electric, thanks for your great comment 👍

The new twin turbo 2 L has both more HP and more torque than the old V6. I have the old V6 4x4 with the 7 speed transmission and the new drive train with the twin turbo 2 L, all-wheel-drive and 9 speed transmission runs circles around my Sprinter. The creator has an obsession with engine capacity. Modern engines are far more efficient than older engines. My first car (30 years ago!) was a 3.3L inline 6 and it produced about 1/2 the power of my current 2.5L inline 4 which also uses 1/2 the fuel. Hell, F1 cars run tiny engines with huge power.

But that applies equally to all engine sizes.

While its a downgrade and i agree with your concerns, the 2L 4-cylinder diesel is fine. The 2L you find in the sedans are completely different engines that the ones you find on the sprinter, and its also completely different compared to the previous 2.1L Sprinter. These are all new developed engines you should give a chance. In Europe, we are unfortunately hit much harder with the downsizing bs, we are used to 2.0L Sprinters by now...while yes the previous V6 was better, the new engines can tow just as much. Tried it in the Alps and the engine does it well. Though it would help a lot if the prices would go down significantly, Mercedes in general from sedan to Sprinter is getting way too expensive for what they offer nowadays. Here is why they no longer offer the V6. Mercedes introduced an all new engine family in 2017/2018 where they switched to inline engine only for their 6 cylinder. The new inline 6 cylinder engines, don't fit into the Sprinter as the engine is too long. The V6 was just kept around as long as they could, as it could only be modernized to a certain point since it's no longer developed and last gen. So everybody knew sooner or later the V6 was going to be ditched. I wish Mercedes developed an inline 5 cylinder as a middle ground as it still would fit in a Sprinter, i think the Sprinter would be perfect with such an engine.

Notice all of the coolers and cooling lines under the van when he films under the front. Mercedes Turbo diesel engines use EXTREME DUTY parts throughout when compared to a gasoline engine and the EXTREME DUTY parts (and engineering), extends to the transmission as well. I tow with a 2014, 2.0 for 100k miles and no issues at all, the 9 speed tranny is smooth as silk and it knows when you have a trailer and adjusts for it. I hear the newest 2.0l has better power too. I will buy another one when the time comes. I was skeptical at first and torn between the two motors, i am glad i got the 2.0l. 25 mpg around town and 17mpg with a very heavy trailer 800 miles one way regularly, just saying.

From what I know about the engine is that the early ones had minor issues. All resolved best I understand. But the best part is they designed it to be able to go up in hp, for when the phase out of the v6 came. The heavy duty chassis with dual axle gets the higher hp motor possibly others two, it has been a few years since I looked at them. If I didn't get the deal on my 2014 right before covid, I would get the new HD chassis with the dual axle. As it is, I have the worst case, a passenger van not cargo, I added air bags and a heavy sway bar in the back and it tows like a dream. I have the high roof and the heavy sway bar helps a lot on the passenger van, they have a very soft suspension for comfort. The air bags are used to level everything especially if I have cargo in the back and the trailer. I have been through east coast mountains and it did well, down shifted good up the hills, I occasionally over rid to a lower gear if going too slow. But not heating issues ever, knock on wood. Will it tow or climb a hill like a strait 6 Cummins, no but then again, pick the right tool for the job. For me the great mileage when empty was important and reasonable towing capacity for my needs. Granted like anyone would, sometimes I wish I had more power, but then there are costs for that, it is give and take. I would love to hear from someone's experience with the HD newer model and if they like it. One thing I highly recommend on the 4 cylinder is not to go the full 15k interval for oil changes, the tiny turbos are sensitive to old oil as they run very hot. I go 10K miles pr less for oil changes. I know they changed intervals several times. To me oil is cheap insurance.

While the new twin-turbo high-output diesel engines, like the one in the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, offer advancements in horsepower and torque, there are some criticisms regarding the new 2.0-liter engine. Many reviews suggest that while the engine is feisty and comparable to the outgoing V-6 in terms of performance, it may not give the same level of confidence when the van is fully loaded or in demanding driving conditions. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the long-term reliability and durability of smaller engines in heavy-duty vehicles. It's important to consider these factors when comparing the new engine to the older, possibly more robust 6V diesel models. The improvements in transmission and steering are noted, but engine performance and reliability are crucial for the overall vehicle operation.

but the 3.0 is great for towing 5000 pounds but the 2.0l is only good for 3000 to 4000 pounds

The only part you care about is the 2.0 and size? My suggestion is go back to 1960s. Those cars fit your knowledge of cars better.

This video is pointless.its not meant for towing..why cant you understand that..its a passenger van or a work van to carry tools.its meant to carry weight not tow.wanna tow buy a pickup.time will tell time will tell.of couse time will tell.everything breaks down eventually.especially when you use it for something its not meant to do

I dont know this video showed up on my feed, but this is the absolute worst most boomer take I've ever seen. The i4 has more power, more torque, better acceleration, smoother shifting. I own a V6 3.0 diesel 4x4 but i would trade it tomorrow for the 4cyl diesel if I could afford it.

I bet you that manager had a confused look on his face. You need to stop spreading false information. Engines these days are far more powerful than they have ever been. An old iron duke could not and will not keep up with a modern 1.8. For your sake, learn about engines and how they actually work

@ericspecullaas2841 very true but yhe life expectancy is a lot less the the bigger engine that I know, I don't need to study for that
