My son purchased an 05 diesel to live-in, with long road trips all over the western seaboard for climbing and biking the diesel is perfect for him with its long service intervals and the economy at near 25mpg, but if your a maybe once a month tripper or a limited area van life person then gas is perfect because 10K for a Diesel engine buys a lot of gas mileage difference and diesels aren’t cheap to work on.

We bought a new 170 inch, 2500 diesel Sprint in 2016. It is the exact same color at yours. We did a full build out the following year and living in Alaska our priority really had to be the 4-wheel drive. It is the perfect camper for two adults on long weekends or week long adventures plus. We occasionally tow a 14 ft aluminum flat bed to haul snowmachines/four wheelers or our 16ft river boat. We have no issues with power on these loads.. It is easy to over load the 2500 and my rear end squats a inch or so. There are a few documented issues with the MB diesel that I didn't discover until after we made the purchase. We only have 12,000 miles on our rig with zero issues so far. The DPF and the EGR value and that system can be VERY expensive to repair or replace and improper operation of the diesel is the root cause of these problems. Never idle the diesel for any extended amount of time. These new motors are designed to run the cleanest at minimum of 1800-2000rpm or speeds above 45pmh. If I am in traffic I shift to a lower gear to keep the motor RPM's in the proper range. Do not lug this motor. I suspect most of the documented issues come from work trucks that will putt around in traffic all day or are left idling on job sites for hours on end. Ours has an idle control feature from the factory and I can set the idle and any rpm range and I will run it at 1600-1800 rpm to charge up batteries through our DC/DC charger if we don't have enough solar gain on the roof. Oil changes are really expensive and routine service at a dealer can be over $1000 if you follow MB recommendations. MB recommends oil changes out to 18,000 miles. No way would I ever go that long between oil changes. My Sprint is out of warranty so I do all of my own oil changes. I will be doing my third at about 20,000 miles and I consider that cheap insurance. Our fuel consumption averages just a bit over 14mpg running light and as low as 11-12mpg running heavy. I expected better since I ordered this with the tallest axle ratio gearing MB offers. There is no perfect van that covers all our needs and I will probably keep this for another 10 years or so. But I can say, this will probably be the last diesel powered vehicle I will ever buy.

The new 2 Liter Gas engine in combination with the new 9 speed automatic runs quite and good. The gas engine has benefits, driving in the USA. I like it ! But, it is till now, not a international mercedes engine, it is local, for the north american marked. The Mercedes Diesel engines , 4 cyl ( 316 cdi) and the 3 Liter V6 engines are worldwide engines. The 3 Liter diesel is used by many military forces around the globus, and many international travelers use the 3 liter V6 Diesel. The 3 Liter sprinter diesel is right now the only Van engine that gets worldwide service and parts supply. Even the new Ford Transit has different technical set ups for local markets. The North-American Ford Transit and the Dodge Promaster look the same like their european versions, but technic and drivetrains are totally different. Not so the Mercedes Sprinters. The Sprinter Diesel is the first choise if you travel even outside the USA. I drive in germany a new 2020 2.1Liter 4 cyl, diesel Sprinter-Tourer with a opt. 51,3 gallon diesel fuel tank, that gives me a range 1350 miles.

Wanted a 170 Sprinter 2WD, to build out for camping - important were sensors, cameras, brake assist, cruse control, ect to make driving safer and easier. Buying in early 2020 there was 0 % interest for 5 years for 2019. These features were almost never in Diesel. There were only two in America, we called a dealer with one and asked to drive it with same issues you had between Gas and Diesel. Loved the test drive, liked that gas was more quiet. First day drove from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe and it was great in the hills. I think the trans is why it handles hills so well. Ours was the passenger with 4 rows of seats, Rear AC/Heat, floor and all walls insulated and covered, windows all around. Because interior was already in we can build out everything with pre-made parts and not drill into the van so build is cheaper, lighter and exactly how we like it. We have an Outback 4WD, for snow so the MB is fair weather mainly. Then my wife negotiated for two hours to get another 3,000 off so it was quite cheap really. As kid I loved VW camper vans and this feels like a modern, reliable version of those old rigs. I also like that the seats have less electric adjustments so it feels very sturdy.

I went through the same decision process and ended up with the 2.0 gas 144 WB Sprinter 1500. I agree that the lack of 4WD option almost killed the deal. The final decision was made by the expense. In my particular example, the 4WD Diesel Sprinter 2500 was $18,000 more than the 2WD gas 1500. The equivalent Ford Transit 4WD was $8k more than the 2WD Sprinter. I live in snow country and constantly drive on snow in the winter so the lack of 4WD was significant. It is common knowledge that a 2WD with real snow tires has better traction than 4WD without snow tires. Snow tires are $1000 which is what I'll be adding in a couple of months. My first major trip was 2300 miles towing about 5000 lbs. It had about the same highway performance as my 4WD Ford pickup with the V8. MPG was 11-12 on that trip! It gets about 20 mpg in town. My van is a work van. It appears to be a very tough van. If I keep up the same miles, it will have 30,000 miles per year on it.

Ford transit 2wd is absolute junk in wet mud. Get stuck very easily, although maybe 4wd may be better.

@@angelgjr1999 Agile OFF-ROAD is putting air lockers in them. A 2wd won't have as much of a traction problem.

We are in our late sixties and drive a 170" 4x4 Sprinter 2500 diesel. Our vehicle takes us to South America and Europe for extended periods. As an overlander not having four wheel drive is a non-starter. FWD has gotten us out of more jams than I care to remember; wet fields, mud, snow. Mercedes vehicles are designed with slip differentials be they 2WD or 4WD which means that worst case you operate with one powered wheel front and one back in 4WD mode and a single wheel in 2WD. Without FWD we would have faced massive delays and several costly tows in out of the way places. Overlanding in places like South America without FWD is just asking for trouble. The “dirty little secret” of RV conversions is weight management and not exceeding GVWR. This is particularly problematical with the Sprinter 170” 4x4 since the 700 pounds of weight consumed by the 4WD reduces maximum usable payload (occupants & cargo) to 2,431 lbs. Despite being VERY weight efficient it has proven impossible to keep this RV conversion from exceeding GVWR when fully loaded. If I had it to do over, I would have converted a 3500. Our Sprinter is maintained as an expedition-ready home on wheels. This keeps the actual gross vehicle weight of this vehicle relatively constant. For two voyagers, our conversion assumes about 1,230 pounds of weight beyond the weight of the RV conversion itself (two voyagers, 30 gallons of water, 28.5 extra gallons diesel, cooking equipment, food, kayak, two bikes, skis, tools, safety & camping gear, guitar, banjo, 4-season clothing, personal electronic equipment.) The vehicles gross weight varies primarily as a function of food, fuel, and water carried. We installed a French 58 gallon fuel tank that powers the vehicle, the furnace and our stove. The OEM tank had a 24.5 gallon capacity. Including a supplemental 5 gallon jerry, this accounts for 270 lbs. of our weight carried full over and above the fuel weight of an OEM tank. However we have a range exceeding 975 miles though we bank on about 900 when accounting for fuel consumed by heating and cooking). The HUGE benefit of the large tank is that we have the capacity to tank up at low cost fuel stops. This regularly saves us $20 to $30 a tank. Absolutely fully loaded with crew (at expedition departure) this Sprinter has a Maximum Weight of 9,859 lbs. That includes • 404 lbs. of diesel fuel (58 gallons) in the main fuel tank • 240 lbs. of fresh water • 58 lbs. of chains for all four tires • 35 lbs. of diesel fuel (5 gallons) in the yellow diesel Jerry can This Maximum Weight exceeds Mercedes GVW of 8,550 lbs. by 1,309 lbs. (15.3%). It exceeds Mercedes combined Gross Axle Weight (GAW) of 9,461 lbs. (GAWF Front: 4,101 lbs. and GAWR Rear: 5,360 lbs.) by 398 lbs. (4.2%). 4,084 lbs. of this Maximum Weight is carried by the front axle, while 5,775 lbs. is carried on the rear axle. Thus each front tire needs to carry 2,042 lbs. and each back tire needs to carry 2888 lbs. The addition of helper springs on the rear axle addresses the challenge of operating at GVW all the time when overlanding and keeps the suspension properly balanced. The load is within the safe carrying capacity of our AT tires. Overlanding we average 15.5 mpg. The use of beefy AT tires accounts for a half mpg reduction in fuel efficiency from 16 mpg. Driving performance remains very good because the vast majority of our weight carried is low. We have no fixed overhead compartments, and do not carry equipment on the roof other than boat hatch, fan, solar panels and awning. In our view, when overlanding, reliability is everything. The money we save in living costs makes cost of operation of a vehicle when overlanding secondary in our book.

@@rightright6582 The learning curve necessary to make intelligent decisions about what systems to install (especially electronic) and how to make (and keep) everything working is just HUGE! Believe it or not, I've generated a 584-page operating manual for our Sprinter conversion. It includes every failure mode that we've experienced in all the systems (electronic and mechanical) and the how to's to bring them back to life. In effect, what is an overlanding RV? It is truly a house on wheels which means it has all the systems of a house and on top of that it moves, needs to be self-sufficient, and is subject to all the wear and tear of a system that is constantly bumped around. Drop me a line (m a r k u s f r o b i n s o n @ g m a i l . c o m without any spaces) and I can share that resource with you. Eventually we will make our own pair of youtube vids; one what it is, the other how it is built. But the gritty details are all in the manual. Cheers!

How has reliability been? I heard some horror stories with bluetec/emission things with the diesels. I had a new Jeep Grand Cherokee with an eco diesel and it would go into limp mode for whatever emissions sensor reason. Reliability is paramount to me

@@alphawolfadventures1470 We are currently in the middle of a 10,000 North American circumnavigation. Our 2017 Mercedes Sprinter (now at 55,000 miles over five major expeditions) gobbles up the DEF. So far this trip I've had to refill the DEF twice, and expect that I'll need to do so twice more this trip. I would estimate that a DEF refill lasts 2,500 - 3,000 miles. We carry two spare DEF containers in the Sprinter at all times so as not to run out. That said, I've had no problems whatsoever with the emissions system. Cheers! Markus

We recently completed our 5th major voyage, a 10,700 miles round trip from Ithica NY to Seattle WA, to LA, to Boca Chica Tx, back home, mostly on back roads and never exceeding 60 mph. We averaged 16.6 mpg throughout.

Very good detailed video and editing! I have driven the Dodge ProMaster and Ford Transit a lot and they were okay Vans. But when I got into a Mercedes Sprinter it was like WHOOAAAAA! I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face! I drives like a S class or Lexus in terms of cargo vans categories! The luxuries and comfort is night and day versus the competition. The only difference is I’ve been driving the V6 turbo diesel Sprinter at work and man it sounds amazing and has great power. I love this new Sprinter van!! It’s a true joy to drive they really nailed it. You can order them with a ton of cool options including the amazing LED headlights. Also RWD is completely fine. This van is #1 on my list! These were super popular back in Europe like over 30 years ago and they have finally solidified their position here in the US! And people are taking notice!

Hi greetings from Brasil. Install a locker at the read diff, like a ARB locker if possible. This will increase the off road capability of the van and perhaps a winch or a pair of maxtrax. A set of AT tyres and you good to go very far.

Thanks Bruno! Very good suggestions. We're planning to add BFG KM2 AT's (265/75 R16's) plus a winch, maxtrax, and other recovery gear but hadn't thought about a rear ARB locker. I like that idea a lot and will definitely look into it!

Unfortunately there is no such animal .... or locker for the Sprinter's differential. U will need to replace the axel with a 44 axel which are common in North America.

I am about 3 years behind from where you were in time. Plan to order a '23 model 170WB AWD with only diesel option. I want to explore dirt roads and boon docking, so either 4x4 or AWD is a must. The diesel is a complex engine with all the Turbo and emission control, but I think I have enough skills to maintain one without breaking my 401K.

Thanks for the comparisons as I was struggling with the same issues and ended up with the smaller gas engine configuration. Being an ICE vehicle driver for over 30 years and an EV driver for the past 10 years, my reasons to opt for the gas version are: #1 -- Diesel ICE burns dirty. Gas ICE is a bit cleaner and we will have to wait until 2030 for an EV version of the Sprinter van with usable range for a RV. #2 -- Diesel fill up stations are far in between where I live. #3 -- Quality grade gasoline is available everywhere around the world now as oppose to 20 years ago so the van can be used as a world traveler vehicle. #4 -- Gasoline ICE are easily repair and parts are readily available everywhere. Things I have to give up: #1 -- An AWD option.

One of the things the calculator doesn’t take into account is mileage when loaded, towing or built out. Unladen, the gas engine will get far better mileage than when heavily loaded. If you wanted gas 4wd, you could go Ford Ecoboost.

I'm leaning towards gas, simply for the fact that I can drive it short distances around town as much as possible, which is most of the initial driving I'll be doing anyways. Probably going to end up with a 2022 ProMaster though for the square body, and middle size of the 159 WB

Hi there, great video. Very insightful. Just wondering if your 4 cylinder gas engine still has that significant turbo lag as my 2016 diesel did? That really bugged me. I had to get rid of it but not just for that. It had a bunch of other problems ranging from leaky roof to bad paint, electrical problems and a couple more. I loved the concept but I have always remained curious if I just got one built on a Friday before a long weekend. 😂 Let me know. Thanks.

No, we haven't experienced any lag. It's always felt peppy and responsive (the 9 speed transmission helps).

Resale value is a big consideration too. As many of these conversions change hands often. Not sure the gas engine holds its value as well as the diesel? What are your thoughts on that?

It would be speculation on my part to say if the gas would or wouldn't hold its value as well since it just came out in 2019. But personally I'm not concerned.

@@wanderlibre4434 Using your figures, the annual Operating Cost Saving, plus the interest you would have earned on the initial $13000.00 would add up dramatically, and off set any hypothetical Higher Resale Value, which I doubt anyway. I am guessing this figure would be in the neighborhood of $5000.00, which far out weighs any hypothetical Higher Value.

The 2wd gas option is very attractive price wise. If you plan on keeping the vehicle a long time the fact that you don’t have to worry about the diesel emission system out of warranty is the icing on the cake. My worries are stressing a turbo 4cyl day in a day out.

Just one other thing to consider when deciding between gas or diesel, the life expectancy of the engine. The diesel engines last almost twice as long as the gas from what I’ve read. If you plan on racking up mileage you should consider the higher operating cost of the diesel. For the same reason resale value will always be higher on a Diesel engine van when you decide to sell it. Of course it depends on how much equity you want tied up in a depreciating asset. I’m going diesel 4x4.

I guess it's speculation at this point. I guess we'll see - however i doubt we'll keep this long enough to find out how long the engine lasts. I'm not worried about it though. Enjoy your 4x4!

Id say this isnt as true these days because of the myriad of expensive and failure prone emissions equipment on the diesels in the US. Fuel system components also seem temperamental and not all MB dealerships can work on Sprinters. If you're wanting to keep it long term, understand you'll most likely be facing some hefty maintenance charges you wont see on a gas engine outside of replacing it or a major timing service.

Good analysis. Just test drove the 2L 7spd gas sprinter today. Nice! Not sure how it changes the formula but in Seattle, the 4 cylinder diesel with a 9 speed transmission will be available next month (May,June). It specs out at 27 hwy. 21 city. Still a chunk of money over gas turbo 4 but an interesting option to consider.

Another factor to consider is what type of driving are you going to be doing, Stop and Go everyday driving or mostly Highway. The Emission System on today's V6 Diesel generally don't like Stop and Go driving! We've had the V6 for a short period of time and didn't experience any problems but that is not the norm. We are planning another Sprinter (Camper Conversion) and will be using it as a Daily Driver so the 4 cylinder will do the job perfectly. We hope to find a Certified Pre Owned (CPO) Van, which probably rules out the 4 Cyl Diesel, but I will be looking. My the way, we have purchased two CPO Mercedes (250SLK & GL 450) in the past two years and have found them to be a great money saving opportunity, both with their Extended Warranties.

Thank you so very much. Drove the 2500 - 144 - v6 - 4 X 4 ( 3 inches higher - step in ) - High Top and the 2500 v4 gas - 2 X ( ? ) - 170 - High Top. Well the cost for the diesel 4 X 4 was UP and the diesel was so noisy . Surprised that the gas model was so quiet - 9 speed transmission and drove close to the same as the V 6. Parking Lot space parking was a little challenging with the 170 WB; Imagine the extended ! I feel the same concerning the 4 X 4; if it was more reasonable and came with the 4 cyl gas, I could consider. Also, I'm 6 ft. 5 in. and notices the step up without a grab bar. Excellent Job on Review. I just might go the same way, if I purchase a Benz. Forget Pro Master and heard some stuff on the Big Transits. Chev/GMC makes a Van ( Long ) with a 4 cly Diesel that use to be Excellent, but no high top. Again thanks and enjoy the Van.

Off Highway Van came out with a LSD for the Sprinter. If you find yourself needing more traction in the snow that may be something worth looking into. They just did a video on it recently too. Great video, I appreciated the content you provide!

Excellent excellent excellent video. Very informative in explaining the differences including price as well. That was always my concern about which option was best between the 2WD and the 4WD for traction purposes. I drive the interstate a lot and run into stormy weather constantly. Do you think the 2WD high roof can handle the road or does it come down to which tires you have that help grip the road better. Thanks!👍😊

That lots of extra stuff you can carry in a two wheel drive translates to that much more stuff to unpack, drain, and dismantle when you get hopelessly stuck in the middle of nowhere!

I watched a guy who has a farm who loved his sprinter, but with the two wheel option being long vehicle when you get into a twist the van loses traction very badly. So he said he would go with a four wheel drive. When you go over a hill in a turn the two wheel loses grip with one wheel which is the one that then gets the power leaving you needing a tow.

As im UK based mercedes does not offer a petrol/gas engine instead we are offered derv ONLY with 4 x pot engines or the larger 6 x pot engine auto box only, My own thought the larger the engine = the less stress = longer life, sprinters are known for popping turbos at 100k miles so a highly stressed engine 4 x pot engine will pop its turbos at what milage ? Also its noticed on the you tube van builders sites the amount of wood / weight they are adding must put the single axle sprinters on the border line on a weigbridge which again is like running a works van fully loaded 100% of its lifetime. Conclusion purchase a dual axle and the 3 litre auto then you will have an unstressed camper plus enabled to carry what you want which overall must equal an unstressed driver not worrying all the time . or at least to some parts less of a worry.

Very instructive video! Could you please let me know the real-world MPG of your gas sprinter after conversion? Also, what is the overall weight of the campervan? Right now I have a 2020 Sprinter v6 diesel 170wb 3500 with 10,000 lbs campervan. I'm planning to go light so order a new Sprinter but I'm unsure whether to go for a 4-cylinder diesel or gas engine. We love it. We've averaged 20.1mpg since we've owned it. We haven't finished the conversion, but have driven it while very loaded with stuff (between moves) and it handled very well.

I accept the 4 cyl as a good option. Using one of these vans as a heavy duty work truck really isn't that great of an idea anyway. I recommend using a 2/3 or *maybe* 75% of gvwr if you don't want it to demolish all of the things that make it a vehicle. Better off with a domestic van/truck for that. As far as reliability goes, the 4 cyl diesel is by far and away better than the v6 diesel. We will see what falls off the gas engine as mileage goes up. The post 2006 diesels are quite expensive to keep up, and break a lot, and go into limp mode for many reasons. Here I am hoping the gasser could possibly be a better option!

Regarding gas mileage, did you do a comparison between actual calculated gas mileage vs the vehicle's computer generated values? I have never seen a vehicle accurately provide a gas mileage value, as they are always optimistic in my experience.

Congrats on retiring! Sounds like you have fun plans ahead! We've driven ours 60k miles and get 20mpg. We've loaded it up with lots of stuff and are very happy with the engine performance. No problems at all (touch wood!) I'd still go with the gas. We'll actually start carrying motos in the van soon!

Very good review! I own a 2012 silver. 2500 crew High top 3.0 diesel. Upsized 18" chrome wheels and Nitto AT tires. Just ordered a 2021 2500 crew, loaded, standard roof 2.0 gas . Totally same story thought we needed 4x4 and at the last minute drove the gas and fell in love. Quick analogy, I only needed 4x4 once in 7 years, and hate diesel everyday!!! I think the 4x4 is also a pain in the ass to activate and is no way a AWD. I am hoping MB will develop a bigger gas engine and AWD (fulltime).

Excellent deep dive and perspective. Two issues that swayed to the Sprinter (even though I wasn't even aware of the 4 cylinder) with the diesel, was the proven longevity of a diesel in a heavy long hauler and consequently the resale value. I don't want to learn 4 years out that the V4 wasn't holding value do to maintenance and longevity issues.

I may give it several years to see how the i4 gas holds up, before I purchase... Regulators are stripping diesel of its lubricity and adding so much emission ancillary equipment that it's losing its appeal. But I've never been a diesel guy unless it's a farm tractor.

Anyone know if you can still lift a 4 cylinder sprinter and add 265/70/17 tires or does it have to be a diesel engine? I just want to lift it because it looks cool and it does improve the ride. I don’t have any plans on doing serious off roading or anything like that.

Yes, but you'll need the Agile Off-road front fender adapter kit (No Rub Front Fenders). Check the details on their website.

We're still building the van, but we do have the outside finished (ie solar and fans on the roof, which add drag). We've done 2 long trips where we had the van loaded with a lot of weight (don't know how it will compare to the final weight), and our fuel economy has gone down some. We're now averaging 19.4MPG overall.

I would go with diesel, I know a guy he has sprinter v6 expediting has 350k , so far no problems, but he takes a lot care of it, changing oil every 10k and transmission oil every 60k, I will get mine in 2 weeks, waiting 8 months already, but for me just for Carpt install, I don’t drive too much. I think those engines can go 600-700k, 4 cylinders probably will go 400k, good luck

Just add leaf Springs to the 2500 for more weight limit. Also no 4X4 does kind of drop you from boondocking way off the beating path. I'm glad you picked something you like, I'm going for a 4x4 diesel then I can pass it down to my kids. (DEF IMO is not a game changer)

We've driven it fully loaded with a lot of stuff when we moved between locations. Not sure what the weight was, but it handled hills and passing just fine. We feel confident that it will handle the weight of a converted van well. But stay tuned, will update how it handles as we add more weight to it.

I have one too. Been loaded with 3200 lbs. 1057 miles through hills and mountains. No drag what so ever. I’ve heard stories of things happening but i haven’t encountered any issues yet

Another thing not mentioned about a diesel is that you can idle them day and night nonstop for days if necessary to keep you from freezing to death!

I ran the cost analysis from the link 144wb 2500 high roof gas vs diesel own for 6yr Living Colorado and 30,000 miles a year Gas came out 111,000 vs 107,000 for diesel for cost of ownership In case someone was wondering

That's interesting feedback. Thanks for sharing. I just ran the same numbers and it demonstrates an important point: the gas saves quite a bit of cost vs the diesel on basically all cost categories when owned / driven in CO Except fuel cost, which is heavily favored towards the diesel in CO. As noted this makes the diesel cheaper over 6 yrs in a high annual mileage scenario in a state like CO where the current average price of diesel is $3.45/gal - significantly lower than unleaded which is currently $4.17/ gal for premium and $3.55 gal / regular). This really underscores the value of the cost of ownership calculator on MB vans website as you can customize your ownership cost estimate to suit your specific state, expected miles per year, etc.

As an hvac/r contractor I ended up buying the diesel. At the time I couldn't imagine longevity out the v4. The diesel is tried and true for many years so it's the less riskier option.

They can make gas engine last as long as diesel but they won't and that's the issue cause look at the old Volvo 240 and see how and why they last so long and some hit a million miles

Gas for summer weekend warriors, anything more get the diesel 4x4. It's a no brainer IMO in terms of resale, safety, and longevity/stressing out a little gas 4 banger. Some people trip over dollars to catch nickels on major purchases -- silly.

yeah for the old diesels its the case. it seems like the new diesels in the sprinter have so many sensor issues so the reliability and longevity seems to hold up on buying all the new parts and sensors for the diesel motor multiple times. probably less costly to get the 4cyl and replace it in 100k miles instead of buying a diesel and dealing with the headache of the def system

In your cost breakdown you specified how much cheaper 87 octane is compared to diesel. However, I believe Mercedes recommends 91 octane for the turbo 2 liter gasser. I have a 2017 Sprinter 2500 144" with the 3 liter diesel and wouldn't consider anything else *for my needs* (

wait wait wait, when we consider #VanLife there's two schools of thinking.. you build you're van out to resemble an apartment, or you go with a much lighter option of the bare necessities (much like a truck driver would) save money, save space, and ultimately save room. also having you're van built by a professional is a heck of a lot more money than buying only what you need from Amazon. i guess because I'm a former long haul trucker that I look at it from the perspective of spend a lot of money on the van but not a lot of money on the creature comforts towards the back of the van. with that in mind I am in the process of selling my home and buying the Sprinter 2500 170 3.5 liter Diesel because I have so much experience with the Diesel engines for living and driving. also a diesel is set to last a lot longer than a gas engine typically. i guess it's all what we are used too in the end. make mine a diesel for sure.

Pay later or pay now and later, it's a slap in the face up front with the diesel options and the cost of diesel and DEF fluids and after treatment issues down the road or very attractive price saving up front on the gas and if you know how to take of the engine they can last 500k miles plus lower gas prices (like a $1 lower) than diesel plus cheaper to repair, I'm in Oregon and the advantage with diesel and being 1 ton diesel is DEQ exempt which means I don't have to smog test for tag renewal or register and that's a plus cause when I purchase my old school sprinter it had taken both of my bad habits, it drinks and smoke and I didn't have enough money to send it to rehab but I could still register and run it with gas that's not happening until it gets clean before could be on the road and that could mean thousands more which I don't have

I sure love my 4 cyc. gas engine in my metris. I've owned 6 years and 95,000 miles and zero spent. I've since bought 2 BMW with 2 liter 4 cyc. engines...X3 and a 430i. I used to be a big engine guy, not anymore.

Great video. Another big disadvantage of the 4WD is the additional height. For me, it would prevent using my current garaging arrangement. Back in 2016 when I drove a 4x4 sprinter, it was only available with the 5 speed auto transmission. The 2wd 4cyl diesel with 7-speed drove much smoother, so that's the one I bought. Very happy with it. However, now the 4x4 has the 7-speed, so perhaps it is improved.

I just looked at a 2016 4X4 Sprinter Camper Conversion to Rent. I was expecting the 4 inch higher entry step as compared to the 4X2 version, but this one must have had a Lift Kit on it, because it was like getting into a Monster Truck. I am not kidding, you needed a 12 inch stool to get inside!

Additionally, I understand the new AWD Sprinter will be for user friendly, i.e. more like their AWD SUV's. We live in the Midwest and go to Florida several times a year, so the ability to drive on the beaches would be a big advantage but only with an AWD. Finally, don't be fooled into thinking that the new AWD will give the same Off Road Traction, it not the same performance, but I think it still will be satisfactory. Our 2017 Sprinter will have to do the job for now, but I sure would like an AWD 4 cyl Gas!

The only downside to this is they're like hens teeth in California right now and it took awhile to find one with a color we liked.

Our first campervan that we lived in full time for 2 years was a 4x4 sprinter 3500XD, which was definitely overkill for what we ended up using the van for. All the basic off-roading most will do in a built out campervan is doable on a 2wd sprinter with all terrain tires and an experienced driver. Wish I saw this video before we dropped all that money on the 4x4! But hopefully it’ll help others in the position before they fall for the hype. We’re looking at building a new van and have been debating the 4 cyl gas versus 6 cyl diesel. Super good points - did you consider the engine life and resale value of the vehicle in your decision? And do you think the 4 cyl won’t command the same value retention since it isn’t known for doing 400k+ miles like the diesel is?

We tend to be overly analytical, so we thought about resale, etc a lot. It's hard to know what will happen since it was just introduced, but given the savings that the 4 cyl gas offers on both the purchase price and operating costs, I feel fairly confident that we'll be made whole when we sell it.

Before I bought my van I thought long and hard over gas versus diesel. Easier to find fuel easier to get repairs and less costly no chance of putting the wrong fuel in the tank motor doesn't sound like a tractor when idling don't have to buy that blue Def stuff

I lease a 2018 Mercedes Metris long wheel base, but need to move to a more roomy sprinter due to the work I do. The 2,0 litre is a great engine but I can't see using this engine in a larger van. Yes, it comes with a 9 or 10 speed transmission versus my 7 speed transmission but I also tow a lot and that's where the diesel might win out for me. When I tow with my Metris I get the typical gas engine experience where the vehicle turns into a drunken sailor. The fuel economy drops significantly. I am also concerned about the longevity of these 4 cylinder gas engines under constant working use as mine is. Right now I have 90,000 km's on the odometer with no problems but I consider that to be a young engine.still. Time will tell.

If it was the short wheelbase with the low roof, you can get away with the gas engine but anything bigger and heavier then I would go for the diesel instead

After 2 1/2 years with our gas 170 high roof, we've been very happy. We've never had problems with power.

It’s no secret that diesel will always be better. Simply for the torque it provides. Better fuel mileage, less moving parts (no ignition issues because no need for distributor) and you can make your van they way you want it without sacrificing weight or fuel mileage. Gas engines have to work harder and especially running a much heavier van than it was stock. Meaning much higher RPMs, wearing your pistons and valves/ head much much faster than a diesel. If you travel a lot in your van, a gas engine will be a huge drain in your wallet.

Here is an interesting fact that I don't think a lot of people realize. Torque at the Rear Wheels can be increased by the Rear Axle/Transmission's Gears Ratios. (This is not the case for HP) This is why MB uses the 9 Speed in the 4 cylinder Gas and the 7 speed in the V6 Diesel. Note, I understand the "Top Two Gears" in the 9 Speed A/T, are OverDrive Ratios, to compensate for the lower Gear Ratios in 1st-6th Gear. Food for thought.
