Nice! Gillies have small mouths, so I've found that using a fly/hook that's bigger than the mouths of the dinks limits hookups to larger fish. Also, they love to nibble/taste the tails rather than bite, so tailless wet flies tend to produce more hookups. Finally, I've talked with many fisher folk who haven't a clue that gillies are even edible, let alone delicious, which they certainly are.

These guys are super fun to play with. They're fighters and they will pull the entire way back if you let the line drag proportionally.

I'm only about two weeks into fly fishing, and although I have went out for my trout and managed to catch a few, I hang out by the lake by my house and mess with these guys all the time. Probably the best practice I can think of. I have the room to work on casting, and also learn to feel for those little nibbles. They're so aggressive, sometimes I catch one when I go to cast. Just that little time of pulling out extra line and when I lift to start my cast, a fish flies up with the hook lol

Bluegill. The blue collar street fighters of the piscatorial world. They will hit anything that moves and eat any bug, minnow or other food form with little to no tempting. I have caught hundreds of these little (and not so little) scoundrels when I travel to the in-laws in Indiana. I always take the flyrod and can spend hours catching them on the surface with Elk Hair Caddis in sizes 10,12 and 14 (if they get fussy). It is great fun to see those fish (often 1 to 1.5 lbs) slam a dry and the fight is pound for pound, one of the best.

I absolutely agree. Fun all day.

Well done, but the biggest thing I took away from the video is that we fishermen try to impart far too much action to the fly. Worms and bugs just don't move like this. Even the fish look confused, and half the time when they tried to take the fly, your action pulled it away from them.
@EParkFishing2 жыл бұрын
This may be true, but in this case the Bluegill were so busy bedding and spawning this was the only way to get them to bite. Also Bluegill in general respond much better to action, and are a lot more forgiving in presentation than trout. Thanks for watching!
@BIGplanetLife Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing..too harsh of action to the jig. More subtle action will produce more fish because it is more natural. That's why these bream seem to be cautious/reserved about grabbing the baits. Been fishing for over 48 years and have been taught a lot by the fish and older more experienced fishermen as well. Slow it down and even some days they want no action at all..just let it down in the water and hold it still. Fish are quite "moody" creatures. Happy fishing!!

I'd also recommend a Bully Spider in white or chartreuse for fishing stained waters. It's even effective for bass and can be fished on ultralight gear.

Instead of a bare weight, I tie on a plain jig as a weight. The weight (with a hook in it) gets at least as many fish as the fly or dressed jig does.

Thank you for pointing that out. I took care in the video to say "Japanese Inspired" and not "Japanese". These knives are not made in Japan. I don't remember where they're made but for the price it's a decent knife. I will edit the description.

Fishing during spawn should be illegal and off limits
@F-15plen7 ай бұрын
why? "Oh because they could die and not guard the babies" THATS LIFE and anyway. Catch and release is a very popular fishing type, and not many places allow you to keep every single fish
@canadiangemstones76363 ай бұрын
You should try fishing before commenting; they’re bluegills, not an endangered species. Bigger problem is stunting due to overbreeding.
