I love seeing vlogs of chartering around the BVI'S. I found your channel randomly, but I loved this type of experience sharing. Thank you so much, I now know what I want to do in the future

Awesome video! We went in 2014, looking to go again in 25' - what bays did you stay the night in? Heard you can rent balls online now - did you sleep at White Bay??
@chazzmania
@chazzmania Жыл бұрын
The bight bay, Manchioneel Bay, Leverick Bay, Next to setting point, long bay and White Bay. By far white bay was the most special. super clear waters and the crew can just hop off the boat and swim to shore for food/cocktails/entertaiment. Most of the places we went you can rent balls the day of on boatyball.com. It helped reduce stress of coming in late into an achorage knowing you had a spot, but wasn't required as there was always extra balls when we went. post some pics of your trip!! wanna see where people go! We are going again in may of '23!!!

ive driven boats all my life but not a bareboat charter.... what do you recommend if i want to take a similar trip like this? will they teach me how to handle the boat or better i get a captain?
@chazzmania
@chazzmania Жыл бұрын
These catamarans handle just as easy as any twin engine boat. Easier, i'd say, because the engines are so far apart. Therefore if you have good experience on a 40+ footer anything then at the very least you can motor everywhere. Regarding the sailing aspect, you'll need experience handling larger sail boats. The large sails carry a lot of power and can really damage the boat/fingers/egos etc. if your not paying attention. The place I charterd with, along with most others I imagine, will go through all systems on the boat before you depart. Sort of a mechanical/electrical briefing. Ours took 2+ hrs to complete and worth every second. It gave me the confidence to handle most any issue at sea.

@@chazzmania i had a 35ft open fisherman so i think i can manage :) my last question is then if you can motor most places? did you ever need to let the sail go to follow your videos itenerary? id like to copy it :)

We sailed for 90% of the voyages between spots and left plenty of time to get to our destination. Never really felt rushed and motored when we felt we were done sailing and wanted a swim. Honestly, the crew appreciated the down time as they didnt feel guilty about sleeping while we were underway vs. at anchor. There are bareboat catamaran charters that are simply motor boats (not sailing). They go faster and if you don't care about sailing then thats the route i'd suggest. I got the sailboat because i like sailing. To each their own!

Did you charter with the same company? I'm planning a trip and curious what your experience was like with Conch Charters.@@chazzmania

@chazzmania 8 ай бұрын
@@joshferguson3729 We did end up chartering again with conch charters. Just as good as the first trip. It feels like a family run shop - which I love. On the second trip we did have an issue with a water pump, they drove out and met us where we were at anchor and fixed right away. Great service.

Did you have any problems getting mooring balls and it being too busy (Cooper Island and The Baths particularly)? Sailing upwind from Norman to Cooper with all the tacking must have taken a while - did you still get there early?
@chazzmania
@chazzmania Жыл бұрын
We reserved balls using boatyball where possible (Cooper and Norman). We typically would arrive around noon or slightly after at each anchorage to be sure we got a ball. At the baths we had to wait maybe 15 mins for a ball.

@@chazzmania ok thanks - was it a case of booking at 07:00 on boaty ball to get one? Any problems with other people taking the mooring? Never used BB and a few years since I was in BVI, your vid was helpful. Other than Trellis Bay, anywhere that had good provisions? Last time we were there (post Irma) there was v little available
@chazzmania
@chazzmania Жыл бұрын
We always booked our ball first thing in the AM for each day. For that time of year it turned out we didn't have to but it gave us piece of mind to wonder into the anchorage whenever we felt like. We only had to kick someone off our reserved morring ball at Norman Island - they were cool about it as they were not aware of the different color balls (white = first come first serve and red = reseved via BB... Typically). Re provisions: any place that has a charter company would be a good spot to provision along the way. Most everything was rebuilt bigger an better than before! Everyone was excited to see tourists coming back. Road town, where we started, was really good. Spanish town is supposed to be good but can't say from personal experience. Leverick bay marina was ok. Setting point in Anagada had a really good store for essentials (beer and headache meds).... expect to pay up the farther you go from Tortola.
