I'm a great-grandmother now but I loved my Barbies and spent untold hours playing with them. I had one of the original ones. A local store had a deal where you could trade in your old Barbie and get a greatly discounted new one that had long straight hair and articulating limbs. Dad took me but I just couldn't give her up. My lovely Dad bought me the new one anyway. When I became a parent I realized Dad knew from the start I could never give up my beloved doll and that he'd be paying full price for a new one. I love when you do Barbie clothes. I'd like to see you try some from the '60's.

paper for pattern. very fine ferrous wire (florists wire or the fine wire in ribbon edges). holographic patterned mylar. glue (not hot glue. it wrinkles the mylar). 1. make butterfly pattern. 2. on the back side of the mylar, trace the pattern. 3. on the back side, glue the wire very near the edge. 4. Cut out the butterfly wing. 5.Having cut a second wing, if you did not cut on the fold, glue the back layer on. 6. Assemble with a center that you already figured out because you are you. 7. Applique to the dress. I have never done this on a dress, but when I needed large flower petals that would react to magnetic wands, it worked. It is a huge pain in the neck, but, oh, well......

Short poof sleeves made from a nude pink fabric might work well under tule butterfly sleeves. They would be fairly unnoticeable and keep you from being scratched by the tule. You might need to starch (or even brush with Elmer's glue all) the tule sleeves to stand up like the butterfly sleeves on the doll.

My thought with the butterflies is if you could find the butterfly hair clips that were around in about 2000 that had springs at the base of the wings so they fluttered when you moved. You might be able to stick something holographic on the wings. This would help them stand up too. maybe even hide a small magnet in them so they flutter when the wand is next to them.

About the "flipping", if the magnet sticks it's never going to do it. It means they are opposite poles. Therefore, they attract each other. You need to flip the magnet so you have same poles facing each other. Then you get the repulsion effect.

I'm loving the barbie sweater btw. I'm looking forward to this barbie cosplay project. I love your past barbie costume recreations. this style was my favorite era of barbie fashion. I'm working on my Emerald city comicon costume while watching this. I'm also fascinated that the number on the box worked but mortified that they told you to get rid of your collectible Barbie. This is just a guess but if you have it, check the certificate of authenticity if it was included in the box, maybe the name of artist who made this Barbie is listed on the certificate and maybe a Google search may lead to an email or some sort of contact information for the artist and they might be able to help you.

In the absence of glitter tulle, sequin tulle is a great substitute for doll cosplay :) There's a whole section in toy safety guidelines now about magnets, due to the unique dangers they pose if swallowed (especially if More Than One is swallowed), so I'm not surprised the call centre supervisor asked the person you spoke with to give that disclaimer about old toys being 'unsafe' for kids to play with. The blue splotches on the pink fabric do not show up in video, at least on my monitor, so I'm confident they won't show through the tulle either. The wig colour and texture are such a close match to the doll! (Minor note: magnetic repulsion occurs when the same poles are pushed towards each other. Opposites attract with magnets.) Good luck with the mystery of the wings!

The butterflies will be on a larger scale when you make them, so you may get away with using lightweight wire, small magnets, or motorized if you want to be really techy. I"m sure there a toy out there that my fluter that you can jury rig into the butterflies. You could hide the wiring or magnet in the structure of the butterfly.

Can you not sandwich mini magnets or thin layer of a magnetic metal like iron. Or if you really wanted to challenge yourself could you have motorised butterflies or could you look into how to magnetically charge a material with static energy? Like your hair with a balloon. In regards to the two tulles. Would it not be prettier and better to have the softer tulle on the top rather than underneath for the skirt and a pink stiff tulle (crinoline) in the sleeves? The wrinkles will just drop out once the garments is made and allow to sit on the mannequin. Other wise you can lightly steam once assembled. Gather the layers separately if you want more volume.

You may be able to reach out to a local college or nearby university science teach or professor. To get there imput. It has to be a simple technology bc overall it has to be kid safe. I did remember watching this other youtubers video on how she made her butterfly princess barbie dress and she used simple motors. She has it beating pretty fast but i know can slow them down. I used glitter tulle from my joann but it was white and gold. You could use tulip glitter spray on tulle but honestly I like your tulle choose even tho its not glitter but dit wont be a hell of a mess and it still gives a super 90s look! Go 90s!
