I’ve owned this backpack for about a month and a half now (I’m a 5’7”, 125# lady for my fellow backpack ladies, and it’s definitely a slim and not overwhelming profile) and I love it. I transitioned from the Bellroy 20L Transit Workpack cause I was tired of the straps constantly loosening and the lack of a suitcase strap. It definitely feels the same size as the Bellroy even though it’s supposed to be 26L just cause of it’s more slim width. I agree with a fellow commenter that I’d love a separate laptop compartment cause it gets tight when packed out. That being said, the carry is magnificent, I love the padded straps and the sternum strap. I’d love a “secret pocket” with a key ring that could also be a side access for a passport, cause I like my backpacks to double as an EDC and a personal item, but I just love the materials and straps and and the front organization pocket that I’m fine letting those details slide.

This is such a nice take for me, I’m also looking to transition from the Bellroy Workpack… there’s something about it’s built after a couple of years that’s no longer doing it for me. From the Alpaka I don’t love that laptop compartment is not separate, and I couldn’t care less about external water bottle compartment. Have you tried Alpaka option to the key ring holder? and also, could you provide some insight to how its aged? I really love the aesthetic.

Great thorough review!🤘 Loving this for my work edc. Fits my work laptop, my logitech mx mech (full size), ms3 mouse, ap max headphones and all bits of gear that i carry along everyday. Love the Alpaka hub accessories, that clips on all of the internal lash points, like their small pouches, key clips and hand sanitizer tube, that all magnetically attaches to the clips. I find the bag not too bulky (or big) for edc, and it's slim, all black and stealthy profile looks awesome even with a formal attire. The materials sort of lends itself to keep its sleek look and shape whether packed out or for a minimalist loadout, making it look sleek and not gaudy-looking. Alpaka makes some of the best packs (like the tech brief, i have the bigger version that transforms from brief, to slig to a backpack), tech pouches that can be both tech organizers or sling, minimalist clutch pouches and wallets. Money well spent when you buy their gear, imho.

i’m very much torn between this one and dayfarer v2. I aim for EDC more than onebag type of backpack, though being able to use it once in a while as a a weekend bag is nice. Alpaca, with all these pockets and compartments and their modular “buy more of our stuff” approach, seems to be more comfortable for all the tech things i carry (cables, powerbank, kindle, mouse, charger etc.). But dedicated laptop compartment and side pockets on Dayfarer appeal to me as well. What would you say is a better value for the money here ?
@Nomads.Nation Жыл бұрын

I'm looking for a bag that handles a 15inch MacBook Air, an iPad Pro, and a 15inch Espresso display. After looking at a bunch of options with the big names (alpaca, Peak, Boundary, Timbuk2, etc), it seems like I'll definitely need a sleeve for either the laptop OR the display rather than a bag that's already perfect for all three - i.e. a slot for each. Perhaps I've missed an option therein/elsewhere?

I would base your decision around size - the MD backpack is smaller and this one is bigger, so the question is how much gear do you carry daily? If it’s a lot, then maybe a 26L will work better for you. If you pack light though, the Alpaka might be overkill.

Received this bag today in X-Pac after seeing your review. It is definitely a competition between this and the Aer City Pack Pro which from my POV can fit bulky/travel items a lot easier. Not fond of the hard plastic divider for the laptop flap - would much prefer back to back soft padding and I don't like how they used this same plastic internal material for the front of the bag as mine got creased during shipment so now there's a fold line going across the X-Pac material which hurts the aesthetics. Maybe its possible to softly iron it yet its already a flaw before I've even used it. For security without using small padlocks I'd prefer flaps across the entirety of the main compartment zippers and a hidden quick access pocket on the rear would've been nice. The zippers desperately need some little tug points ala the Aer as thanks to every zipper being waterproof they're a lot stiffer than the normal version. The shoulder straps need some upper adjustments so it can sit higher on my back as with it lightly packed it hits my lower back uncomfortably with a 3L Peak Design Sling inside with camera gear even after tightening and I'm 6'1. Main reason why I went with Alpaka was for the dual use for a water bottle and a compact umbrella and the price point was a little easier to swallow. Overall its closer to an everyday bag with *occasional* use for a weekend thanks to that small opening. City Pack Pro seems to have a better balance between the 2 options if you're looking for the best of both worlds. I don't have it yet I am pondering returning this and spending a little more for those premium features and clamshell design. This may have 2L more than the other yet it requires a specific set of luggage.

@@Nomads.Nation Slight update, I think I will keep it since the CPP went up in price to an eye watering AU$420 (thanks to inflation..) compared to the $290 I paid. Might consider the Travel Pack 3 Small instead as an additional backpack since its larger at 28L, has the waist strap option, can be compressed and has lockable zippers - don't understand why Aer didn't bother adding lockable zippers on the CPP but I guess they're trying to encourage people to spend more money on features ala iPhones. Alpaka's bag ability to stand on its own is a welcome function after I owned an old Pacsafe Venture 20L that was as flexible as a human with no bones. Its disappointing that apart from Pacsafe all other companies don't bother too much with security features or hideaway zippers to add more guesswork for thieves. I know this video is 7 months old, but in your build, why not build your pack with a side attachment (kind of like a mole connection) to hold a water bottle? Then you can build the attachment as an accessory to the bag and size them accordingly. Mole is just an example, but you could use caribeaners as the attachment method and have loops or hooks on the sides. That would still allow you to have a clam shell opening without a permanent side pocket being in the way.

I don't know if I noticed this before, but you mentioned how it was "unfortunate" that the luggage pass through was horizontal instead of vertical, and I didn't know that was a negative for you (dunno if that's too strong a word, but my vocabulary is limited when I'm still waking up). I'm trying to recommend a bag to my friend, but he insists on a bag that stands vertically on a roller bag as opposed to horizontal. You got any recommendations in that regard? I'd appreciate any if you've got them!
@Nomads.Nation Жыл бұрын
For sure! It's actually a pretty short list (only considering bags I've reviewed). Harber London Rucksack, all the bags from the Nomatic Navigator (and Lite) collection, WANDRD PRVKE, and that's literally it. The bag I'm making will have this feature too, but we are a ways away from that launching. Hope that helps!

I was almost going to buy that same City Pack Pro! But the price was quite high and I found a 15% coupon for the Alpaka + I can get it in X-Pac material (making it 25% cheaper overall). 26L capacity is a little too much for a typical day but its only 2L difference and that makes it a bit more flexible if I ever need it.

Why don’t more bags have a D-ring above the side pockets, so the umbrellas/ water bottles can be fixed in place?

I'd actually prefer that the main compartment has the laptop in it. In my opinion having a separate compartment for a laptop can be a target for theives since they know that part of the bag contains specifically your valuable laptop/tablet

Aaron, I wanted to follow up on a comment I made from a few weeks ago on the peak design everyday bag where you recommended the ALPAKA elements pro for my needs. While I appreciate your recommendation, and trust your experience, this is, in my opinion, a terrible purchase and an even worse company. First, there is just no way this bag is 26 liters. It’s noticeably smaller than an 18 liter bag. Secondly, the “felt” in the line pockets is quite rough. I wouldn’t trust it to not scratch my belongings. I also agree with your negative assessments on the bag. As for the company, it’s been a terrible experience. First it took me 3 emails (no other contact method) to get a response. And when I did they were unhelpful and insulting when they openly questioned my intelligence for not seeing that their return policy has some kind of restocking fee up to $15. Just a horrible experience all around. I hope others have a better one but I plan on telling everyone I can to not use this company. Sorry for rant! Happy holidays!
@Nomads.Nation Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear about your experience. The bag is definitely tighter than it looks, and maybe the felt material is different from the bag I reviewed.

While it is 26L on paper, it acts more like a 20-22L. The main compartment is a bit tight but can expand a bit, the overall aesthetic is not similar to a typical 26L bag. Take bellroy apex which is rated the same 26L - that bag is significantly bigger (i owned both so i know). Having said that, I totally agree it misses an EDC side pocket of sort - like the one in Boundary Errant, i dont like the flappiness of the water bottle pockets (lucky i use a memo), but that admin panel man.. first class delivery. Generally it’s an amazing value for the price

So definitely some similarities, but enough differences for me personally to be OK with it. To me, Aer is like Radiohead and Alpaka is like Coldplay. Was Coldplay inspired by Radiohead? Absolutely. But did Coldplay take that inspiration and do enough of their own thing to where it felt original? In my opinion, yes

I need a recommendation for a bag strictly for traveling. No digital items, computers, tablets, camera, etc…. It’s wasted space for non digital nomads or influencers. Just the regular Joe trying to see the world.

Crazy that most bags have laptop sleeves/tech compartments these days, so I can't think of any that I've reviewed. Those compartments can be used for lots of other things though - books, clothes, umbrellas, flat items in general. But otherwise, I'd recommend checking out Osprey packs.
