Hello Rory. Your most ambitious flight and your most ambitious video. Really excellent work - I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please pass on to Lizi how struck I was by the way she sensed the tension you must have been experiencing about that low cloud and high ground (and, I'm guessing, internally beating yourself up about the call to the tower) and then gave that wonderful support. For me, as a psychologist, and not a pilot, that was probably the best bit of the video 😉. I very much admire you leaving in those more tricky moments. Easy to empathise that it must feel humiliating when you hear that word 'Negative' after a read back. Yep, well worth waiting for. A fantastic adventure for you and Lizi, taking such a monumental trip on with so many firsts. Part of the fun of flying is feeling the butterflies in your stomach leading up, and then coping with a bit of stress (and sometimes iffy RT en route). When the butterflies stop, so does a big part of the enjoyment. Well done! You should be proud of yourselves.

I share a similar goal. CAP413 itself is not 100% though! Some of the phraseology examples it gives are confusing and condtradictory. Hope to do my QXC this weekend and possibly skills test next week. Your videos fill me with inspiration of what to do post qualifying :)

One of the things that has put me off learning to fly for many a year is the thoughts of “what if I do it wrong!”, or “I’m bound to get it wrong”. Your videos show me I could do it too... cheers.

That's a cracking trip and video. Don't envy you reading back instructions received from a Jock over a crackly radio! The central column on C42 makes it difficult to write instructions unless you are left handed. My instructor gives an instant PFL is you take your hand off the throttle which makes it even harder.

Thanks Darren - good question. I was worried we'd bake in the heat so I took a C42 because it's shaded. I would have preferred the extra speed in the EV97 but the Ikarus did us proud.

Rory On Air, ok good point I do miss flying the C42 I can’t fly the one at our place anymore as it’s only for training So it’s the Eurostar until I get something my self, by the way I did fly UK last month as a passenger but we shared the flying highly recommend for next year if you could buddy up with someone it definitely brings you on. Taking my son up at the weekend he’s a budding musician in a band, I have watched lots of Rory videos take a look at The Loose Cut you never know if you have 5 mins to fill in the day job. 😀

Just found this video and it’s great. Fife is my local airport as I’m from Glenrothes. I’ve recently started my lessons in a c42 at balado airfield in Kinross just off to the west a little bit. Worth a visit if you haven’t yet. Can’t wait till the restrictions are lifted and I can get back in the aircraft.

From what I have seen at Barton, it does take a little longer when you’re older but that means you will have had more time with an instructor when you pass, giving you the chance to have absorbed more of their knowledge so it’s all good. Everyone is nervous about RT. I was and I work in Radio and present on it! You’ll get the hang of it quicker than you think - I found practising my calls in the car by myself helped. Cheers, Rory.

Thabani Sibanda brilliant - I’m delighted you both enjoyed it! So it was just over 5 hours total there and back. It cost me £350 to rent the plane and an additional £80 in landing fee and fuel at Fife. You should definitely start learning. Where are you based?

Absolutely inspirational and beautiful, my local club has c42s and I am thinking of getting nppl soon so I can have similar adventures. Can't quite pluck up the courage though, which is the only barrier at the moment. Any comforting words of encouragement?

liamcollier2 thanks Liam - it was an amazing adventure. You should absolutely do it!! Have you been up for a trial flight? The time counts towards a your licence if you decide to take it up so it’s a win win. Learning to fly was fabulous - you gain so many new skills and confidence and meet loads of new people plus flying is very cool and not everyone can do it. The C42 is a superb training platform and a very capable aircraft. Go for it!

Rory On Air - I don't think they really expect anyone to be perfect. They do understand that every new pilot has to start somewhere and many don't train in busy airspace - You flew right past my house, by the way. If I'd have known that you were flying by, I'd have been able to see you from my kitchen window.

Rory On Air - Oh... of course... Every flight is a learning experience and whilst it is good to identify areas of improvement and errors, it's best not to dwell on them too much, especially when you still have your hand on the stick - Don't let it cause further distraction. Do you do post-flight briefings? That's the ideal time to review mistakes and improve procedures. Recording the whole flight (even if just audio - I know that GoPro batteries aren't the best for endurance) can help if you want to go over your performance with a fine-toothed comb. Editing video for KZbin can make you aware of small mistakes that you might not have noticed in-flight, too. Sometimes it can lead to being hyper-critical but as you said, there is merit in striving for perfection although we should never beat ourselves up too much if we don't achieve it. This is one of the things that I like about the aviation industry and its "culture of no blame" - The focus is on improving safety procedures for all rather than heavily penalising someone for making an error.

Richard Maher thank you and I’m glad to hear you find it helpful. I have been meaning to do a video about my kneeboard for a while so will try and do one soon. It has a plastic cover on it when you buy it so I just put some white card behind but I then made a laminated sheet with notes for the Radio calls.
