My 12 year grand daughter and i harvested 65 heads of garlic yesterday. She is here visiting for a couple weeks from a different province. This country life with chickens and gardening is all new to her, lol. There have been a lot of questions, she tried a black cherry tomato yesterday from the vine, for the very first time! Hoping to harvest the potatoes before she goes back home. Trying to show her as much as i can about this life before she is back in the city.

Beautiful garlic!!! We moved in December to Door Co, WI and I didn't have a garden to plant garlic. I can't wait to plant this fall :) A year without fresh garlic is no fun!!!! I'm hoping to pick some up at the farmers market this weekend. I have a awesome onion crop this summer. Sorry about your back! My shoulder is tweeked and I can't raise my arm :(

What garlic variety do you grow? This year I grew out 16 varieties (11 hardneck, 4 softneck) and Inchelium and Thermodrone did the best for the softneck and overall. Italian Mountain Red and Romanian Red did best for hardneck. I like your easy harvest method. I've always braided or tied in bundles and hung to dry under a wisteria covered arbor but the wagon saves a lot of work. I trim the roots and hose everything off before I braid. For the pierced garlic or those whose peels are splitting and won't store well, I can them as chopped garlic when it is done curing - chop garlic in food processor, put in 1/2 pint jars, cover w/ olive oil, add 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid or 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (bottled, not fresh) to each 1/2 pint, waterbath for 10 min. Another way I store it is to peel and put in a mason jar and cover the peeled cloves with a good vodka (Costco brand works great) - you can easily grab a few cloves when cooking and the leftover vodka is great for deglazing a pan when cooking.

Great timing - I've been watching mine for the past week, looks like it'll be another week before they're ready, but now I've had a refresher course!

Hello Y'all, I am Steven from Dakota county. I just cut all the scapes off today so in the next 10-17 days I will harvest them all. I planted about 150 cloves 6 varieties all hardneck. I really did like your video today. Very informative. Do you use the scapes? Do you buy garlic seed heads or use your own? I buy mine from Keene Garlic in Wisconsin. I am working towards not buying and using my ow, New to your channel and it is nice to find folks from here to have similar weather and growing conditions. Cya next thyme, Steven

How exciting!! We love using the scales. Our fav is grilled like asparagus 🤩. I bought my original batch of seed garlic from High Mowing Seeds many years ago but have been maintaining my own stock since then

I cured mine only to find maggots when I opened up several bulbs to use 😭 I can’t be sure if it’s allium root maggot or leaf miner…do you know how I can tell? And how to handle this moving forward? I’ve seen them on other allium crops in past seasons. Stop growing alliums for a couple of years? And will ornamental alliums also harbor the pests?
@thehomesteadingrd3 ай бұрын
Oh no! I've never heard of those or dealt with them before. I'm so sorry :(
