Drone video and photographs of the ice climbers would have been epic! I was worried when that crow pulled you over to talk....you can't trust them out in the park. It starts off with a couple of bread crumbs and the next thing you know you've been framed for feeding the wildlife while getting a ticket in the park. They are secretly hired by Parks Canada I think.....

Drone video would be awesome, but I am not allowed to fly it in the National Park. Even if it was to send them a warm cup of coffee by air 😉 Spies of the Canadian National Park no doubt. Like the eyes of Saruman searching the land..... This place does look like a chapter out of Lord of the Rings. Thanks for the great comment! Cheers my friend.

Majestic and wonderful scenes. I bought two guitars from a man in Banff. Now I know more about the great place it is.

I'm glad that my photography has given you a better appreciation of Banff and its natural beauty. It's always interesting to hear about personal connections to a place, such as your experience of buying guitars from someone in Banff. I'm assuming you play guitar not just buy them? What kind genre you play? I don't play as much as I want to but with this new channel I'm starting to record some acoustic rifts here and there to add to my videos. Thank you for taking the time to leave a positive comment!

@@MattShannonPhoto I went through a time when I was constantly trying different guitars. A good friend said that I didn't buy guitars - I rented them. Yes, I do keep a few. I have played for 58 years and have dabbled with many styles. I met my wife because I played guitar. My present job is the result of playing guitar. I was hoping to find the emails between me and the Banff soul who I did business with, but I guess they are long gone. We connected through the Don Grosh guitar forum back in 2010. He worked for the national park service - that I remember. It is hard to love photography and music. One seems to win more time over the other. From previous videos I had the impression you played guitar. You are doing a great job with your video production, so I have a feeling you'll excel with your recordings. Presently my acoustic is a Taylor Taylor 714c. I bought it because of their newer X bracing. For 20 years I was a Larrivee' player, and I'd like to pick up one of his OM models some day. Are you playing fingerstyle? Those are the players I have the deepest respect and admiration for. Anyway, I better quit rambling and let you shoot some photos or record a new song. I should also say in closing that this video reminds me of my dream vacation, which is to shoot pictures for a week at Yellowstone in the winter. Thanks for sharing your skills and wonderful photos.

@@jonstout7635 I remember reading this follow up comment while I was out in the woods waiting for a great horned owl to fly out from a hidden spot. I then got caught up in the moment a didn't reply. One of my downfalls to having a cell phone with me in the woods....not recommended if you can help it 😄. woah, you are far more advanced in the world of guitars and music than I am.I love Taylor guitars. I've been playing since I was young, but mostly on cheaper guitars cause I take them everywhere I go. Camping, traveled to South America, East Asia, from the jungles to the freezing cold with my 3/4 size guitar and sometimes my full size acoustic. I couldn't stop with one string instrument either. ukulele, 12 string, mandolin, 5 sting banjo, electric, bass, piano, harmonicas....etc. I do play a bunch of styles but mostly finger style and I'm not just saying that to get your upmost respect lol. Like you, my hobbies and passions seem to battle for top priority in my life. Which is a great problem to have in my opinion. I stopped playing for several years until I started a KZbin Channel. Now I want to bring some of that music to my channel in the background. It's been fun to mix a few tracks, nothing crazy at all....I'm not that good. If I ever need a new guitar I will know who to ask for help! Thanks for sharing!

@@MattShannonPhoto I don't know about being more advanced, just more "experience". I look forward to hearing your compositions. The heart that guides your passion for photography will produce great music as well. I got to know another player via the Grosh Guitar forum who is a design engineer for Chrysler. He wrote and recorded his own compositions in his home recording studio and I was blown away with every new project he sent to me to critique. If you love fingerstyle guitar and you haven't listened to them yet, my favorite players in recent years are Gareth Pearson and Shaun Hennessy. Phil Keaggy continues to be my all time favorite player.

Z9 has been brilliant! All-in-one camera for me so far. I didn't use the D850 much during this trip, only as a backup camera. The new features the Z9 gives me is making it hard to jump back to the D850 even for landscape. Thanks for watching and your questions!

Matt you so make me want to go back to the Banff/Jasper area. That multiple row pano along Icefields road was such a smart idea. I shot it with single row but multi row must allow for that to be printed HUGE. Such a beautiful area of the world you are lucky to be in. Have you tried Sunwapta Falls as well? Only shot it in summer but must also be incredible in winter as well. I look forward to all your videos. Thank you for doing them and inspiring some of us to get out and shoot.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear that my photos and videos have inspired you to revisit the Banff/Jasper area. The Icefields road is definitely a beautiful spot for panoramic shots, and multi-row panoramas can allow for large prints with incredible detail. I did get a chance to go to Sunwapta Falls, but It wasn't worth shooting in my opinion. That was the waterfall I said was a huge flop for me. The spillway of water was all clogged up with chunks of ice and lumpy snow. You couldn't even tell if it was a waterfall. And the snow on the trees were distracting and blah blah blah. I decided to rush out of there and head to the next place. Sunwapta is on the list for next time but in early winter! It's always a joy to hear that my work has encouraged others to get out and shoot, and I appreciate your support and enthusiasm for my content. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a positive comment!

Compared to the raw file of the D850, do you find the less workable Z9 raw file? I mean not compressed raw files for both 🤔
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi Nicola, sorry, are you asking if I think the D850 raw files are better or worse than the Z9 raw files? If you are asking that I think they are very similar. They both have a 46MP sensor but the Z9 is a Stacked CMOS Sensor where the D850 is a BSI-CMOS Sensor. I can't really tell the difference in landscape photograph, but for fast action like wildlife I think the focus speed, accuracy, and subject recognition is a lot better in the Z9 due to the Stacked CMOS sensor. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching! Cheers

Hi Matt, I just discovered your channel and really enjoyed this video of my Alberta backyard; am now a subscriber 🙂. How early did you leave Jasper to get good light down Hwy 93 ? I haven't driven the route in winter but would like to try it out some day. Do you have any concerns with bears at this time of year? Thx again for bringing us along and showing us your process.
@MattShannonPhoto

Welcome to the channel, so glad you found me! Sunrise was around 7:40am I believe and since there were clouds and snow showers, the good lighting seemed to stick around for some time after sunrise. The best light was around 8:00 or so from what my time stamp says on the photographs I took. If it was a clear day, I'm sure it would have been just after sunrise when the sun first hits the mountains with an orange and gold light. No concerns with bears except for this one spot in the woods I was hiking in down in Banff where the area of a bear den was flagged off warning hikers and mountain bikers to stay clear. I wouldn't want to snowshoe over a bear den and wake a sleepy bear. I've never been too concerned about black bears or grizzlies in the woods. I've taken courses, carry first aid, bear spray, learn the body language and stay calm in situations where I am confronted by wildlife. Perhaps my time photographing grizzlies over the years has paid off so I can remain chill in the woods. I published a 4 day wildlife workshop on my youtube channel you should check out. Plenty of bear activity 😄

Be sure to use Expedia online to book a hotel if you don't do that already. I planned my visit in the rockies during the week (Mon-Fri) and I got hotel deals for $79-99 at nice places. Not 5 star, but a few of them had a pool and hot tub and the cheaper ones are still available for a few bucks less....but I wanted to splurge a little 😄.

Great feedback thank you. Yes, I can share my lens details. I add the focal length in each image but not the type of lens which is a good reminder for future videos. In this video I use all Nikon Nikkor lenses. For wide angle shots I use the 14-24mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens. For mid range I use the 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens. For zooms I use the 70-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens. I have links in the description if you want to price them out or see their specs. Thanks again for the feedback! I will add more lens details in future videos.
