I have lived in Portugal for the best part of 20 years and I am married to a local. In my experience, whenever anyone orders a coffee they simply ask for a "café;" not that many people say "bica," even if certain types of Lisbonites do so. Asking for a "cafe" may seem vague but you will by default receive a 'bica' or what's referred to as an espresso internationally. If you want some extra water in that (so the liquid in your 'espresso' cup comes close to the brim) aks for "um café cheio" ("cheio" meaning "full"). If you would like a black americano-style coffee, ask for "cafe abatanado". For milk options, do as suggested in this lovely video, although - if you really like a milky coffee - ask for a "galão" (quarter of coffee and three quarters milk). Also, and referring to some of James' other great videos, you wont come across any torrefacto cofee in Portugal :-)

You got it pretty well. There some regional names for the espresso (bica being more of a Lisbon name) but everywhere in Portugal, you ask for a "café" (coffee) you will get an expresso. Just one thing, "galão" (or "meia de leite" if you prefer a cup instead of a glass) isn't really measured, you take an espresso into the glass/cup and then fill it with milk.

I had the pleasure of vacationing in Lisbon as a child with my family (in the early 1960s). Two things that really stand out out in my memory was Gouda cheese (I still love it even though I remember it being much better in Lisbon) and a sausage that some locals grilled for us that resembled American hot dogs but were thinner, and had the casing on them. They "squealed" when grilled. They were so good! I don't think Portugal had "hot dogs" at the time we were in Lisbon, so I'd like to ask if that sausage sounds familiar to you and what the name of it might be. Loved visiting your country!
@100Saco-61

@@marcbentley7839 one thing that i find strange in your memories is that you associate gouda cheese with Portugal. Gouda cheese is a dutch cheese produced in the city of Gouda. However there is some similarity with gouda cheese and a cheese produced in Portugal that we call by the generic name of "queijo flamengo" (flemish cheese). It makes sense. The thin sausage you remember eating is maybe "linguiça". It's a kind of thin chorizo. Google this link and let me know if that's you were talking about. www.360hyper.pt/minipreco/cascais/lingui%C3%A7a-extra-escolha-econ%C3%B3mica?gclid=Cj0KCQiA7YyCBhD_ARIsALkj54rKUQTeQZyJFTpVWLy2nej2pLdetJ3aCNRjd5pC8Lvu4mfd3mO_wgwaAofFEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

@@100Saco-61 Thank you Jorge! I wasn't aware that Gouda was from the Netherlands. Lisbon was the first place I ever tasted it, so I assumed it was from there. It did have the red wax coating that I associate with Gouda. Then again, the locals I referred to might have been Dutch! We met them at a camping ground near the beach. As I said, I was a child. I did look at the website you suggested about linguica, but the product I had looked more like cachchoro or cachorrinho maybe?. It was smooth in texture. Nevertheless, they were both delicious! Thanks again for responding. I guess I'll have to revisit your beautiful country again to confirm!

Crowned, but more beautiful than ever. From that you just said about the smooth sausage i assume that it is similar to the ones used around the world to make hotdogs. Cachorro is the portuguese word for puppy. Lolol We use the german style sausage to make it.

I recently visited Lisbon and I made it a point to try some (actually most) of your recommendations! My God... they were some of the best food I've had. The grilled sardines & grilled bacalhau in O Gaiteiro were just simply amazing! The pasteis de nata in Manteigaria were great but to be honest, I did try many others and Manteigaria was my 3rd choice behind Pastelaria Santo Antonio in Alfama (top!) and Pasteis de Belem (the original). The piri-piri chicken in Bonjardim were to die for and I actually went twice as it was that good! I did try the ginjinha in Jinginha Sem Rival and it was quite good! Having bica in Confeitaria Nacional was very useful mid-day but it was more of the place & experience rather than the pastries. Unfortunately, I was not able to try the bifana in O Trevo as there were so many people queuing but I did try a bifana elsewhere and it was a good snack! Thank you for the awesome recos. We will surely join one of the Devour tours the next time we visit Madrid (& Barcelona)! Cheers!

My last visit to Lisbon I stayed in the Estrela District and found a small store that only sold take out Piri Piri Chicken. That was the only food they sold Piri Piri Chicken and only two sizes, whole chicken and half chicken. It was delicious and it a good sign if they only sell one thing, you know they have master cooking it.

That is quite common. Piri piri chicken or just "roast chicken" (as we call it) is a sort of traditional take out in Portugal, i'm not in the mood to cook anything. Any town has at least one of those. As a kid I knew that Sunday night was usually roast chicken so that my mother could get a break...

I would like to add that Ginginha is more than medicine ;) It is a social moment, often after work people would gather there outside the small shops to drink a shot and chat with coworkers about the day or politics or anything really, when I was younger it was always fun to go there and just listen to the older men discussing life and the most recent scandal on a politician or celebrity and often it was a meeting point, it used to be the favourite spot to meet with friends before a night out or before a date with someone. Now it is full of tourists , sadly , and locals are being driven away from our city center, our traditions and culture. Lisbon was a very old city and often it looked very dilapidated or ruined but it was extremely rich in culture and ingrained traditions, now most of it is gone and most of what you see is for tourism. Like the Pasteis de Nata, every cafe had those and every cafe had their own secrets, so you had your favourite spots to go and eat them, now again, they are made in one or two ways, Pastéis de Belém, Manteigueira where they make thousands a day for tourists, and to be honest I don't like them. I prefer the traditional ones , that you can still find in a few untouched places, like Casa Chinesa, near Rossio, and where you can still find all the most traditional pastries in Lisbon. ( another café that will soon disappear to give way to another Hotel) . And like someone commented here, you did not try seafood and you do not know what you missed.

Just a note for the Bacalhau which origins yes do date back from the 1500's but not because they were fished far away (Canada was only "discovered" by Europeans a few years before hmmm I believe), instead it was simply because it was the cheapest fish that was sent in the long expeditions that shipped from Lisbon. At that time the only way to preserve food was basically salting it. So they would stick the fish into wooden barrels full of salt.

Mead is very popular in Poland and for centuries has been produced there instead of wine since the climat in Poland did not really allow for vines to produce nice and sweet fruits. Mead, however, used to be produced by many and served on the nobility tables. Today you can have it hot (with spices) in winter time and chilled with lemon in summer.

Good video. We were in Lisboa a few months ago and took a (different) food tour, with several of the same types of food, but nowhere nearly as much food, just small bites for the most part. I lived in the Azores for 5 years, as well. Interestingly, I have never heard of "bica". I just know that pretty much anywhere in Europe (I live in Germany) if I order a cafe, I am getting what Americans call espresso. And if I want a "latte" I order a galao. In the Azores, the typical breakfast was a galao and either a ham sandwich or ham and cheese sandwich. Delicious. We loved the pasteis de nata at Mantegaria at Time Out Market! And our tour guide showed us a different way to get up the hillside other than H&M. I have to say, I'm glad we didn't have to walk all the way up the hill to get to the Café da Garagem!

My family and I visited Lisbon and Porto just two weeks ago! So much fun! Another great place for pasteis de nata is Fabrica de Nata, they are tied for first place with Mantegaria: I love Fabrica's crust and I love Mantegaria's custard... Now if only I can get the best of both worlds here in Los Angeles! Of course, if you're in Porto, you have to try a Francesinha and I think the best place for it is a Brasao (they have a few locations in Porto). I wish this video was released three weeks ago so I could check out the different places you toured! Saude!

Just back from Lisbon. You can skip the Bifana sandwich. It really is just boiled pork. 'Hey I'm cooking a pork tenderloin tonight. Better start boiling some water.' Also the canned fish place is kind of neat but at the end of the day, they just pull everything out of a can, heat it up and serve it to you. Not sure why anyone would want this. But do check out a place called Solar 31 da Calcada. Now that is a seafood experience you will never forget. You won't get anything from a can there. Also have a drink at The Red Frog which is a speakeasy. Neat place. And for the best rooftop experience go to TOPO MARTIM MONIZ. There are other rooftop bars but this one is more local and isn't overrun with tourists and is in an office building rather than hotel. And they have 80s arcade games!

Portugal has a vast and rich history, a language that comes from latin and is really hard for outsiders(and natives) to learn because of all the tiny details in pronunciation. We are very proud people when it comes to our country and yet very humble. You expirienced some of our most famous dishes but in a way that is not the most traditional, some of those places are targeted to tourists, food that is cooked with buisiness in mind. The real version, cooked with love, care, respect for tradition, a process passed for generations...that is the real deal, that's were the portuguese people go

Great work overall, but I just want to point out one thing that could be misleading: regarding the 'pastéis de nata', the video makes it sound like there are only two alternatives: the original ones in Belém (a.k.a. pastéis de Belém) and now the new ones at Manteigaria. While it is true that 'A Casa dos Pastéis de Belém' is supposed to have the 'original' recipe, 'pastéis de nata' are a staple amongst Portuguese pastry shops and cafés, and can be found virtually all over the country. The two varieties mentioned here are indeed excellent choices.

Ok.. I'm Portuguese. And a few things lol first of all "uma bica" is not such a usual thing to say. We just say "um café" and specify the type of "café" we want. Full, short, with milk etc. And also I was a bit cringing with those bifanas. I don't know about you, but for me bifanas are small cuts of pork, thinly sliced completely soaked in a spicy sauce. Next time, if you come to Porto, you need to try bifanas from Conga. They are amazing.

Honestly, the best way to find a great place to eat is to look for a local tasquinha, one that really only serves a few pratos do dia. They'll be tiny 'hole-in-the-wall' places tucked into side streets, filled with the local workers. And the food will be delicious, filling, and cheap. And one good way to separate the good from the mediocre is to see if they serve more than just bacalhau or frango assado no forno. Look to see if their blackboard listing their pratos offer things like cabrito. (Google Maps is pretty useful for this, as long as you look through the pictures for each place to see if there is a blackboard listing the pratos.) 🤤 Cabrito assado no forno a moda do minho. Soooo goooood. 🤤

Indeed we do portrayed ourselvs as that (I know I do, I'm a bona fied grammar nazi xD)... We are (for the most part) very proud of our language/heritage and the "proper" way to speak it and i know it's not an easy task for foreigners to learn it (after all portuguese is considered one of the toughest languages is the world to learn)! So we may appear as "grammar nazis" of some sort, but in fact we just want others to learn and speak it as we do... for instance, most of us doesn't see brasilian portuguese as proper portuguese as the brasilian grammar is so much simpler and, honestly, they do not speak it right (unfortunately illiteracy is still a major problem in Brasil) and simplify it a lot, not to our taste :D If I could give you some sort of parallel, I believe it's just like English and american English, although english grammar is so much simpler than ours :D

I am from Lisbon and thought this was lovely. I would suggest adding a petiscos stop to eat ovos com farinheira, or alheira de caça, or peixinhos da horta, pataniscas or pica pau, but also seafood, gamba branca do Algarve, camarão de Espinho (Fresh water shrimp), amêijoas and also conquilhas. Also missing arroz de pato and arroz de polvo, or bacalhau à braz, some very iconic Portuguese dishes. Places, Frango da Guia (a variation on the chicken) and Cervejaria Palácio (seafood and more). Pão de Deus is normally eaten with a filling, I like butter and cheese. I enjoyed your tour :)

Ellis's pronounciation is quite good. Nearly spot on proper Portuguese. Nice upload. Thanks for sharing.

yes, but that is one gramatical issue that the english language doesn't have that's the difference between male and female things, "uma" means "one" in female version, but "um" also means "one" but this one is the male version. And in this particular case it's even more confusing, i think, because "um café" e "uma bica" both are related to coffee although "coffee" is male but "bica" is female.... i just can't imagine myself beeing foreigner and learn portuguese... must be sooooo confusing. As a dramatic example just check out the verb "to do" in all its variations and then check, in portuguese, the same verb that is "fazer".... you'll be pretty amazed
