Pina Colada wakes up those back taste buds with a WOW. I agree M-4 snuck up and is as good as Sugarloaf M4 is more juicy and less tart. These three knocked coconut cream down a notch. I have multiples of all 4 cause they are all top tier mangos. But that look on you face when you tasted M4 was priceless. Nice video

What do you think of the flavor of Pettigrew mango? (if you've had it) I haven't tasted it but it appears to be the parent of the coconut flavor mangoes.
@growpuravida4 ай бұрын
Thanks for bringing it up. Yes it is said it is another coconut flavored variety. I have never gotten opportunity to try it, perhaps Tropical Acres is the place where one could buy it for local pickup but since moving to CR it is difficult to coordinate pickups now.
@chuckurso5938 ай бұрын
Excellently made video. I just bought a Sugar Loaf! I noticed that taking it to the max with ripening tends to smooth out the flavor and intensify the coconut nuances. I had sold my Coconut Cream tree about a decade ago. The tree shape was a nightmare to deal with. Living on the water, it would have blocked too much of my view so it had to go! Seems like S.L seems to grow more upright, which is a huge plus.

You are right, our Sugar Loaf is a much prettier tree than the CC 😹 will try your advice and see how the taste changes! Thank you!

Thanks again for the very good review. I could almost imagine what they taste like from your explanation. I have 1 more space for a tree, have sugar loaf and m4 already. Thought about pina colada and ice cream until I read they are very finicky trees. But a later variety would be nice and had Carla on my mind. Just to many choices.
@growpuravida4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bruce. Yes too many to choose from :) . Go for a cocktail tree with two varieties in it for later variety. M-4 is later as well though. Carla is a very good choice for mid to later season. Orange Essence is also an excellent later variety mango, but grows slower than Carla so may not go together in the cocktail tree.

I thought M4 was a late season mango, but you have it here in mid season?
@growpuravida3 ай бұрын
Yes it is late season, some mature early in the same tree but most hang there on the tree for weeks even after maturity.

M4 has not been so productive but taste is very good. If you like the taste of Ice Cream go for it.

I want to keep my potted mango and guava trees small (3 and 7 gallons). When and how should I prune the trees? Please help!
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
I have experienced that plants behave completely different when they are put into the ground as if they are connected to a new underground network of life and grow with better disease resistance and drought resilience over time. I have thus stopped keeping plants in pots except a few jaboticabas which will soon get into ground. If you want to keep guavas and mangoes in large pots, you will have to use a lot of fertilizers periodically. Use micorhhizae, keep Nitrogen low, use langbenite and seabird guano for potassium and phosphorus respectively. Prune guava after winter just when spring starts. Guavas will flower on all the new shoots. Mango pruning depends on the variety. Normally done after the harvest is collected or late August pruning should be ok. For pots prune the top leading branch in the center back completely so a side branch becomes the dominant leader branch for a yr and then prune that next year.

@@growpuravida Thank you so much! I am actually thinking of pugging the potted mango trees to keep them dwarf. Can I do it now? Should I move them to the shade after pugging?
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
you can pug now, do not overwater after pugging, no need to keep in shade but not overwatering is important, with no leaves there won't be a way to transpire. You will lose 2 years worth of fruits though after pugging.

How do you compare these mangoes to indian mangoes? Are these mangoes better
@growpuravida Жыл бұрын
I would not say better but certainly they have different layers of taste to them. If i say a mango tastes like lemon pie or orange sherbet or pineapple juice in India then i would get a weird look but its a reality here in FL. The base taste is that of mango as we all know but there is a certain twist to each variety, some have a bit of coconut, some have a hint of pineapple and some have combination of different fruits all together in a really complex taste. Mangos in FL are really worth a try.

@growpuravida4 жыл бұрын
That’s a bummer. Pina is a slow grower for me, i have grafted it to half of Angie. Coconut cream and Sugar Loaf are loners. M-4 just got an Amrapali graft a month ago and accepted her gladly. It is hard to keep many varities without going for cocktail trees but i want to keep at most 2 varieties per tree.

Does Alphonso mango have coconut taste too?
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
For me, Alphonso grown in Florida did not have the coconut flavor. It had sweet and spicy flavor similar to Sonpari mango but the flavor does not get the same complexity as it gets when grown in India.
@ilocanodetoy22253 жыл бұрын
@@growpuravida I just got a grafted Alphonso from Florida Everglades Farm, I hope it will turn out good here in Hawaii, based on my research about the soil here in my location is about same from where the original Alphonso came from, and humidity in my location is not much which is good to keep mango disease out of it.

@@growpuravida What is the closest Alphonso tasting variety for you? Sonpari or Super Alphonso? I asked because I never tasted much varieties and I am looking for the best tasting variety for an asian taste buds like me.
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
Super Alphonso doesn't actually taste like Alphonso, but Sonpari does. If you want a better tasting Indian flavor mango Val Carrie should be something to try for sure... It doesn't have too much spiciness as Sonpari but spiciness is very well balanced with high sugar content. Check my Val Carrie tasting video and let me know what you think!
@oscarc68003 жыл бұрын
Which one has the most intense coconut flavor and tartness? I am still confused... :)
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
No confusion. There is no match to a properly ripened Pina Colada in intensity bomb but it is a small sized mango. The tree also grows compact, not dwarf but easily manageable. Mango growers mostly the ones who go for size of mango over flavor intensity don't like it for these reasons. Graft a pina colada on to a sugar loaf tree, they will match pretty well in growth vigor.
