Wow! Talk about a king hunt. The game reached a point where every move by black was purely defensive. As a spectator these games you review are very entertaining. By pausing the video and trying to anticipate the next move I realize how great these guys were/are. Speed chess has its place but not to decide world champions. These historic games shows how timeless chess is. When engines were perfected I believe we all lost. The intrigue and wonder of these genius chess minds are now compared to a computer and no matter how magnificent a game the “ engine” always has a different/better move which diminishes the opinion of the viewer. I completely prefer pre-engine chess. Those were the days when the champions were the engine. Thanks again Mato for a superlative classical game. I always have time for Mato and his chess lecture!

Damo Hanson Nowadays players don’t play like this, they prefer the draw just to save their ratings... Boring....

This Schlechter series is amazing! He plays like Tal or Keres! And by the way, I think my chess aptitude has improved. I am now better able to see chess tactics and my confidence has improved! Thanks, Mato!

Carl Schlechter sadly died of starvation and pneumonia in 1918, only 44 years old. What a loss! What a wonderful chess player!

An awesome game by schlecter. I also watched a game,if I'm not mistaken against Lasker, where he showed the same magic. Well, Steinitz was trying to save his queen all along, quite foolish of him I thought, considering how he lost in the end. By the way I've noticed quite a few times, Steinitz is quite mercurial. When he wins,he wins in great style and when he loses he looks very silly. Of course it's my opinion alone.

Schlechter is moving across the board as if it's a bed of hot coals - but he's a yogi, and it doesn't hurt his feet. He has no fear.

Schlechter died in 1918 during the WWI from hunger - collapsed at the simultaneous game. That was the end of life of such a talented chess-player with whom was very difficult to win. About our video - very instructive.

What impressed me the most in this game wasn't the sharp tactical play (that was cool I admit), but how Schlechter knew to break general rules when the position called for it.

Schlechter played like a computer here, in this match he had always best moves, so destroyed first champion of history.

If I saw the board right, I believe there were at least a couple of times Black could have captured the checking piece at the price of givingup the Queen. Easier said than done, but I think Steinitz should have sensed that his Queen was going down anyway, and staved off the checking Rooks, Knights, etc.
