From all the games I have seen, I believe that Morphy was actually quite imprecise in Endgames, simply because he didn't really get a lot of OTB practice. He generally played instantly and in endgames, that's sometimes quite costly.
@gmpillo6044 жыл бұрын
Morphy didn’t have much experience playing endgames just because his opponents rarely survived that long
@steakanator72364 жыл бұрын
The endgame in general wasn't too heavily studied back then, since if you weren't sacrificing everything and smacking the other guy's king, were you really even playing chess? Still, Morphy's natural understanding of the game allowed him to play the endgame fairly well, this game notwithstanding. Game 3 of his 1857 Chess Congress match with James Thompson comes to mind: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1336498
@BinaryRex184 жыл бұрын
He played the endgame well but of all aspects of chess, the endgame is the one which most resembles a computer. The only old player who can really match up to modern computer assisted players is probably Capablanca.

Some of the greatest games of all time are ones a non-titled player can appreciate and watch over and over, and yet find relatively little in there that they're able to actually take into their own games, because the ideas were so brilliant and so situational that the odds of being able to replicate the winning principle are slim. This, whilst decent, some might describe as forgettable. But it's very instructive.

@agadmator's Chess Channel, I love the endgame, and have studied it for years. At 9:02, you mention gxf6 and of course black is lost, but what about Kxf6? This of course must be calculated, as it's VERY tricky! So, white goes KH4(g4 and WHITE would be on the verge of losing as he is in zugzwang), and then g6 by black, Kg4 by white, takes takes, and all of a sudden, black has the move e4!, because if white plays dxe4, then c4 and white is only barely in time to stop the pawn, while the black king is a very good defender of the two passed e and f pawns(but of course cannot take them). But after the black c-pawn is grabbed successfully, White is, again, winning. Just wanted to show you that gxf6 is NOT forced, and Kxf6 is defiantly, although losing, the trickier way to play as black! I think that gxf6 is just the automatic response, as it "fixes" blacks pawn structure. Anyway, thanks for reading, and I'd love a game in the future if that would be possible on Lichess. I'm @pipandchuk there too!

The funny part is that there is actually a bar in a library that I know of. It's the main Boston public library. They renovated it at least a year ago. I was there once last year and noticed from afar a bunch of people in the middle of the day enjoying alcoholic drinks in the bar. They were all dressed like they were at the Royal Ball in London. It was obviously and unfortunately for upper-class or rich people, complete w/ a couple well-dressed hosts (in bow ties) manning the door. Not my type of place...Heck, bars in general aren't my type of place.
